Spiders v Eastern Washington

No need to rub it in. We already know that we don't have a prayer of beating you guys and accept that such a beating is in store for our team that it may set the world record for beatings with respect to college football games. That is a given, and we would forfeit right now but for an obstinate AD who feeds on negative PR for the school since we have recently called him to task on an issue I cannot reveal.

I heard that your offensive players were awesome, even more than you say, especially the WRs... that they are not just skilled in their moves and ability to catch, but that they punish and destroy whenever they get a chance, sometimes running away from the end zone to which they are headed after a spectacular catch and head back to the CB or Saftey who they just left in their dust in order to punish him with a crushing, sometimes life-threatening blow. I have heard the same from others on the AGS board so I know that it is true.

I mention this because I just got off the phone with a Spider mom, a friend of mine who reads this board and has a son who is a backup CB but gets a lot of playing time. She suggested that she did not mind your WRs bewildering and embarrassing our CBs, LBs and Safeties with their almost inhuman moves and catching abilities, but she is fearful for her son's safety. She is a shy lady and she asked that I speak on her behalf to implore you to take it easy on her son who is a really nice guy, though obviously slow and inept when compared to the level of abilities of your WRs. I agreed because I share her concern and a concern for other members of our defensive backfield who I do not want to see hobbled for months after they return from the game. So, on her behalf and on behalf of other Spider moms too shy to speak up, I ask that you take this matter up with your team and should they be willing to agree not to engage in such ruthless punishment of our players, we will be forever in your debt. Once I receive your response, which I anticipate to be agreeable, I will be providing you with young man's number and probably the numbers of others whose moms are also fearful of such harm to their sons. They will undoubted come forth as game day approaches. You can have at the others as you desire, especially the DL who can better fend for themselves.
Thank you, in advance, for your consideration and, hopefully, your compassion.

I suspect this team is basically JMU with much better receivers and a slightly better defense. So that's what we are up against. Of course we could have beaten JMU had we done something on that last drive of the game, but we didn't. Seems to me we need to be at least +2 in the turnover margin Saturday and probably score TDs on both of those to really have a solid chance.

Either that or hope the snowstorm turns into a blizzard and we can outgain them on the ground.

Amazon reviewers all agree; 5/5, would recommend for all prospective Eastern Washington opponents. Greatly increases customer satisfaction in survey of those making donations between September 1, 2008 and December 1, 2016.

We are a team that loves to collect possessions. I don't like our chances in a game where we lose the TO battle by more than one. And we did indeed look sloppy in a wet game against Montana. I'd prefer it remain clear and sunny like it is this morning.

Oddly enough though, NDSU's last playoff loss was to us, in the snow, in a game where our tailback broke his foot and Bo Levi had to start gunslinging like an Old West sheriff. I really hope Lakesbizzzzzon is still lurking so that he can chime in about how the end of that game was BS ;)

Bet that was really worth the time it took to write.
We know better than most that there are no givens in the playoffs. Our best teams have come up short where a less talented but grittier version won it all.
I'm not guaranteeing anything for my team. I just thought that if you were a fan of football, maybe you'd like to get a perspective other than the media's. Because if you read STATS or any other of the like, they tend to write stories about games where Gubrud throws 100 times a game; Cooper Kupp catches all of them; and that we have never put a defensive player on our roster. I'm not sure where they watch these games, because I've never seen one matching that description myself.
I'm not here to stroke your ego or mine, I'm here to learn about your favorite football team. And perhaps offer some information about mine.

Geez. Lighten up. Get a sense of humor. Or better yet, get in touch with your "inner football child."
I was not trolling you, simply a little banter. And, BTW, I did indeed find it worth the time I took to write my post, a mere minute or two. Others may take up to five.

"A football game does not need to be described as though it were the End of Days, more often it should be described for what it is: a game." William Shakespeare, Henry VIII, Act ii, scene 5.
(A statement by Henry's 4th wife, Ann of Cleves, admonishing him for cursing in front of the children who had just arrived home from a visit with the Pope. She was beheaded shortly thereafter. The cause of Henry's cursing was Lord Chamberlain's laughter when the touted WR for Scotland, Cardinal Wolsey, dropped a ball right in his hands which would have won the game. James IV, his brother and King of Scotland subsequently invaded England. True story, though I may be a little off in the wording of the quotation.)

How droll... or I name thee droll...?

Adjective or noun? I can't decide which, you appear to be the expert in quaint words and pedantic humor.

Actually, in the first instance, it's an adjective. In the second, a noun.
Quaint? Wat you mean, man? That's how we speak here in Virginia. It aint quaint by no standard.
Elizabethan is as common in Virginia as Welsh is in Wales.

Ah, but I knew the forms in which I used the word. I merely wished to know which should be applied to the situation at hand.

Please, Sir, I will be guided by you in this.

Maybe this is off topic for the "was the catch lucky thread" but I thought I'd offer a thought:

It's not just Cooper Kupp y'all should look into as far as understanding EWU football. Sure he's 1300+ with 14TDs.

But the real catch is that we have two other 1000yd receivers in Kendrick Bourne (6TDs) and Shaq Hill (15TDs). That's 3500yds and 35 TDs for the trio.

And the depth doesn't fall off after them, as the rest have combined for the other 1000yds and 7tds lacking only the opportunities for more.

That's the challenge in defending this Eagles team. Combine that with a QB with good rushing ability and receivers who rush AND pass as well. I believe this is what gives the team such a fantastic 3rd down efficiency.
Yes but weren't most of those catches lucky?

Was she the one with syphilis? No wonder.

No, it would depend on bids. Unless they've changed it, you bid once prior to the playoff bracket announcement and that bid is put up every round against the bid of the opponent (assuming neither team is seeded). Would hope we outbid Wofford, but guessing Youngstown put in a big bid. They regularly draw 11k+.
Don't know why I'm replying to this now, but...
As far as I know, you bid a week or two before the end of the regular season. You bid on all rounds at the same time, but you do make individual bids for each round (the minimum bid changes in different rounds).

Neither would be appropriate. The terms "comicality inadequacy, " "facetious insufficience" or " humor privation" would be terms which would fit. There are others, but I dare not share them on this board. That said, here's an idea: let's take this discussion private. While you and I obviously appreciate the nuance and subtlety of a linguaphilia, I am sure it bores others to death. You can reach me at my work email, grammarnazi501@harvard.edu. I'll get right back to you unless I'm teaching a class. Let's do delve more deeply into your issues.

ForensicEagle, ummmmmm, a curious marriage of words and quite a coincidence. Do you know ForensicToad? We went to UR undergrad together and remain good friends. He was a WR, but he did not possess anywhere near the prowess of those today at EWU. You would like him. He also speaks Elizabethan.

That's 1:00 pm Pacific time. I'm not sure that a Spider football team has ever played in the Pacific time zone!?! I know they've traveled farther east to play football (London, England, 1988) but never that far west. Hope the jet lang is not an issue. Go Spiders!

Vienna - that is a very interesting fact of this game - first time the Spiders have ever played in the Pacific Time Zone.

I believe the furthest west we have ever played was at Wyoming.

Jim Reid era when we literally played in the tundra on an ice natural field.Sean Gustus had trouble getting any traction all day and we had some TOs.Weather didn't seem to both the locals.
I thought we wore the wrong shoes for the first half?

I was there. It was cold and loud and frozen. Montana was good. We had a couple of big gains called back in the second half that could have gotten us back in the game. One really bad call on long pass to Toler. Great trip. Flew into Spokane and drove over to Missoula. Beautiful country. Funny that you fly into Spokane to get to EWU. Spokane is home to Gonzaga Bulldogs also.

Shocked that EWU coach would want them going forward with an announcement not even 24 hours before a QF playoff game.

Do players rally around the coach and give it their all, or do they get discouraged and pack it in?

Regardless, another variable that works in our favor.

The tweet says that a coach will be named by Friday, not that it will be Baldwin. Baldwin has assured his team that there is no way that he will not be with them through the playoffs. They seem ok with that.

According to ESPN, EWU only had 6085 in attendance last weekend.
With expected weather this weekend, and the fact students have to buy playoff tickets, it's 2 weeks before Christmas, and student's exams start next week, it should be far less on Saturday. I don't think the crowd will be a factor in the least.

Much smaller than I would have expected.

they have plans for a massive renovation / expansion..

Definitely not a stadium where noise would appear to be any factor, at least not at the attendance numbers they probably will have Saturday. It's sort of a glorified HS stadium.

It's a small stadium and the track removes the fans from the field. Hard for us to make noise. Those expansion plans are outdated and will not go through.

Great program, bad stadium. Something will have to be done in the next decade given the growth rate of the program.

That's disappointing to hear – the schematics looked pretty nice. Is it a funding issue or something else? Our stadium also has a track around it, so we know how that goes. And noise is not really much of a factor for us either, because of the layout.

Yeah, that plan fell apart after they spent four years and couldn't raise money for it.

More recently, they looked at building a new stadium on some farmland north of the current one, but that appears to be too expensive as well. So now they're back to figuring out how to improve the current stadium. They have a wishlist, but no firm plans or money to do it with.

similar to ours except for the endzone seating and well, that color turf.

My hope is that the Spiders will have sideline space heaters available for this game. Doubtless, EWU will. Could be an advantage, big-time.

Richmond poised to stop high-flying EWU

(STATS) - Eastern Washington has powered its way into the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs behind the division's top passing attack.

Richmond gladly welcomes the challenge of trying to contain superstars Gage Gubrud and Cooper Kupp.

It will be strength against strength when the Eagles have the ball Saturday, as the 12th-ranked Spiders bring one of the best pass defenses in the FCS to third-ranked Eastern Washington.

Much has been made of the Eagles' dynamic passing game, and Central Arkansas thought it had a way to bottle it up in last weekend's second-round matchup. It turns out, that strategy just prolonged the pain, as second-seeded Eastern Washington (11-1) rallied for a 31-14 victory.

The Bears focused on taking away the deep ball and gave the Eagles the underneath, so Gubrud methodically marched his team down the field with short, easy passes. He attempted 64 throws - the most by an EWU quarterback since 2011 - and completed 47 to 11 receivers for 449 yards. He scrambled for 68 yards and scored on the ground for the Eagles, who were also buoyed by a defense that didn't allow a point in the second half, forced two turnovers and permitted a season-low 244 yards.

"Even though we didn't score as many points as we've been averaging, we found a way to win the turnover battle 2-0," coach Beau Baldwin said. "When you take care of the ball in the playoffs and don't turn it over at all, and are able to get a couple, that leads to wins - it flat out does."

Richmond (10-3) is 10th in the FCS in turnover margin (plus-11) and brimming with confidence after rallying from 17 down in the final 16 minutes in last weekend's thrilling 27-24 win at No. 8 North Dakota. Griffin Trau drilled an 18-yard field goal - his FCS-leading 23rd - as time expired to send the Spiders into the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season.

"I can't be more proud of this football team," Richmond coach Danny Rocco said. "The toughness they put on display was phenomenal."

Last Saturday's point total was a season low for the Eagles, who are third in the FCS in scoring at 43.1 per game. They are also second in total offense (541.7 per game) and first in passing yards (412.3) as they get set to match up with a Spiders team which ranks fifth against the pass (160.8).

Richmond has allowed 13 passing touchdowns and opponents are averaging 6.39 yards per attempt.

"I don't know we've faced a defense that's as disciplined and plays as a team as well as they do," Baldwin said.

The Spiders, however, have not seen an offense that airs it out as well as the Eagles.

Gubrud leads the FCS with 4,535 passing yards, is second with 42 touchdowns, third in completion percentage at 68.7 and fifth in yards per pass at 8.98. The sophomore, who also leads the FCS in total offense with 5,066 yards, has the luxury of throwing to one of the most decorated receivers in FCS history.

Kupp's 101 receptions are the second-most in the FCS while his 126.5 receiving yards per game rank first. He owns 15 FCS receiving records, including career receptions (412), receiving yards (6,156) and touchdown catches (70). Last season's STATS FCS Offensive Player of the Year is one of the top three in the voting for the 2016 STATS FCS Walter Payton Award along with Gubrud.

The two were also both named the Big Sky's Offensive Player of the Year - the first time two players from the same school won that award.

Fellow senior receivers Shaq Hill (1,077) and Kendrick Bourne (1,056) have also each topped the 1,000-yard mark and have combined for 21 receiving touchdowns, presenting further matchup problems for the Spiders.

"Their wide receiving corps is probably as talented as any we've seen," Rocco said.

The Spiders have a pretty great receiver of their own in Brian Brown. The first-team All-CAA selection is second in the FCS in receiving yards with 1,441 and averages 18.7 per reception.

Deontez Thompson shoulders the ground game, having set a Richmond freshman-record with 927 rushing yards.

While Gubrud threw the ball 64 times last week, Richmond's Kevin Johnson has attempted 52 passes in his entire career.

The Spiders had been sitting Johnson this season but removed the redshirt after All-CAA second-team selection Kyle Lauletta suffered an ACL tear in the regular-season finale. Johnson has exceeded all expectations as an emergency fill-in, completing 30 of 45 passes for 604 yards with three touchdowns and running in another two scores in the two playoff games.

Lauletta's season-ending injury is one of 18 Richmond has had to overcome this year. The team has also put aside the rumors Rocco is unhappy with the administration and is going to take the Delaware job.

"They've obviously gone through a lot of injuries, but to be where they are now, still, it's a testament to the team that they are," Kupp said.

This will be the first meeting between these programs, and the winner faces either No. 13 Youngstown State or 19th-ranked Wofford in the semifinals.
