Spiders going Adidas?

Maybe we will be able to get some decent apparel at the bookstore for once. Maybe they won’t have to cram a swoosh next to a spider next to a UR on everything. And for the person who always says “well we are a small school and there just isn’t a market for it,” I ask you to look at other schools our size and smaller and look at their offerings and designs. Whoever chooses our stuff is stuck in the 80s.

Also, why can’t we change the spider so we don’t have to have UR next to it? Spyder doesn’t have the rights to all pictures of spiders. Have it leaning the opposite way. Change it up. I love the spider logo, but hate it whenever we have to put UR next to it

A copyrighted logo must be followed by the decorators of any college merchandise. The only way to get around it is if the school copyrights another logo, allowing the decorator to do another version.

As someone who actually operated a licensed products business, all I can tell you is that small market licensors don’t generate a lot of demand and if you’re a licensee you’re generally hampered by minimum volume commitments with your manufacturers. So can you get more creative stuff? Sure, but you have to find a licensee who is willing to make small lots for you. They exist but not in droves.

None of that changes what I believe your complaint is though. “Design” is driven by two things, the products a licensee will make and the service marks the licensor makes available to you. Most licensees have a templated set of products they make and just vary the design based on the available service marks the licensor provides. UR actually has a reasonably varied set of products given their market size, even if it doesn’t feel that way to you.

Good find SF. Adidas>Nike. Always favored Adidas over Nike so I’ll take it.

Like PA I felt like some of the better apparel had the overrated Nike swoosh.

I realize we’ve hashed out the copyright Spyder issues here many times. Yet imo it will remain beyond frustrating bc it just seems silly we can’t sell apparel w our unique Spider logo on it by itself. Without UR or some variation right next to it. Watch when the Cleveland Spiders come onboard they’ll be able to do it no problem.

I would take the variety offered by Bucknell over ours.

But why can’t we create a different logo with a different spider? As someone else said, I guarantee Cleveland would be able to do it. It just feels like we didn’t want to change our design so we just said fine and added a UR to everything instead of just creating a different spider.

We could, but that’s usually left up to the marketing department and licensor as to what will sell. As was said, we are a small market and have little choice.
I just bought a great looking sweatshIrt from the NCAA Fans group, All it has on it is RICHMOMD arched over our Spider.

So yet a third dimension to this equation you just stumbled across, many/most bookstores aren’t operated by the universities that own them. B&N does a good job sourcing vendors. I think UR is actually operated by the university iirc.

They can, no doubt. They just have to design them then spend 5-10k a pop to file for service marks and wait 18 months to hopefully receive them.

I suspect like most things, it’s just a reluctance to spend time and money on it, or some preference not to dilute the brand with tons of variations.

Wouldn't think money would be a consideration/problem if we talking $10s of thousands versus a nearly $2.5 billion endowment. Some of us have modest expectations like we protect/honor the Spider brand and have MBB go to the Dance more frequently than every decade or so.

Personally I have zero interest in changing the Spider logo. Because I think it’s great.

If our sports teams can wear we should be able to buy it. My beef is I think we should try to revise the agreement w Spyder. Is it some airtight agreement in perpetuity? We have a good law school, we can presumably hire good lawyers. It was just a bad settlement imo.

I agree...if we can revise the deal. But a spider with a big “UR” next to it is ugly. I’d rather it just be a spider over the word “Richmond.”

Ugh, prefer Nike, Adidas football and basketball uniforms for college have been terrible since jump street. Not inventive and usually very ugly.

As someone whose previous industry has been destroyed by covid I started to learn how to vinyl cut and sublimate to pass time which turned into custom shirt making, patches, socks, stickers, christmas ornaments, football helmets etc. Enough to where its turned into a small side business and was turned off by the NCAA licensing that accompanies it. I have a ton of UR and other state school designs people say they love and wanted to buy that I have made for myself because while I love the logo (Even though its a tick anatomically) I cant stand some of the bland stuff they put it on. Unfortunately they are going to sit on the shelf because of the upfront registration fees that come with just getting your foot in the door unless I wanted to be an outlaw.

Do you have an email I could contact you at? I would LOVE to pick your brain on this industry as someone starting out in it and determing weather to invest in some more equipment.

That’s funny, because I will go and purchase from online stores that are selling Richmond shirts completely unaffiliated with the university. They just say “Richmond,” but they look so much better than what we have and I figure nobody really knows the difference.

As long as we don't ever try something like that alternate spider from about 10-12 years ago. That was a mess. I'm glad they pulled back on it after originally claiming it was going to be the new logo full time.

Thanks. Where can I find them?

Its always about money. I am guessing Adidas just offered to provide more $$$ in terms of equipment and apparel for our sports teams. And given that the Athletic department has been saying all along this year they need more donations to cover the increased cost of the pandemic - I am guessing this was a way to say some money as well.

I found this one.

Couldnt find the one our marketing department corrected to say Richmomd. 😁

I like it it's a good one. But only 2XL. Is that thing such a hot seller that it's only left in 1 size? Doubt that's the reason. Alert me please when XL or L comes available.

Today is the first day of the new partnership with adidas.

I went to the UR Spider Shop website to see if there is any new apparel for sale, but there are zero adidas items on the site. There are, however, still 201 Nike items available.

I suppose I should be surprised but I'm not.

All of the clothing companies are having serious inventory issues. They cost of freight, the back-up on
the docks, difficulty in hiring personnel, are just a few of the problems. I’m sure Adidas is having the same
issues.
