SLU Game Thread - Pack RC to support Coach and win our next to final home game ...

Some of the posts don’t age well 😂 @I-M-UR the shirts are for autism speaks. Gilly brother has autism and we started wearing these a few times a year
That’s what I thought, but white writing on baby blue may not have been the best choice.

This turned out to be a great game to attend. We finally had some clutch play and a little good luck at the end of a game. Very happy for the boys and the coaches. We all know Mooney would have somehow lost this game, so it’s great to see the players take over and win.

Great game to be at last night. Things looked pretty dire for the majority of the game. Collins consistently carved through our defense like a hot knife through butter and our 3 point defense was not great either. But we kept the game close enough for the first 25 minutes to allow for that exciting finish. Big time contributions from all over the place and you've got to feel good for Nelson to have a bounce back game like that. This was a game we've seen our guys lose more often than not this season so it feels great to be on the other side this time.

Side note: I hope for Mooney's heart's sake that he wasn't tuned in last night, that game definitely put my heart to the test.

One more thing - anyone else notice the St. Louis assistant coach who yelled every time our guys were releasing their free throws? I heard it on the first few that we took and started watching to see and it was probably the 3rd or 4th guy down the bench from Travis Ford. What a lame move for someone who should absolutely know better than to do something like that especially in his position.

That is lame. Ford obviously must have known he was doing it too. Ford is emblematic of the the severe coaching deficit in the league lately. Just has always done less with more.

it's one thing for visiting fans to do something like that but pretty classless to have it coming from the staff

There were definitely a couple SLU fans behind their bench yelling during the FTs too. I didn't see the coach doing it but must have just missed it.

nice halftime adjustment by PT ... fixing everybody's shot.

a few minor differences in coaching. he did let Ford call the timeouts when we were on a roll. Goose and Bigelow had their fewest minutes in a while. not sure if all the 3's were by intent, or just taking what was available. or if we were just unable to get it inside. they did double Quinn early.

I thought our PGs both played really well. maybe the best game they've played combined.
no idea how Burton goes from looking that bad shooting in the 1st half to looking that good in the 2nd.

I really like Collins. that's a fun PG.

I just got to my IPhone this A.M. and don’t know if this was addressed ‘cause I haven’t read all posts. Just curious - did we offer to St L player Jimerson originally from RVA who played at Benedictine and St Chris? Looks like a really good player. Would have been nice to see him as Spider.

Mooney and Jimerson have said in the past that UR and VCU recruited him and he unofficially visited both, but he didn't want to stay home.

According to 247 Sports we didn't, neither did VCU which I find odd. Went to St. Bridgets as a kid and its always weird to see him on the floor in a D1 game because he used to beat me in recess lol

I do not recall, verbal comitts does not show that we did.

he was a freshman in 2019. trying to remember but I think we only had one opening that year and it went to Burton. if that's correct ... tough to argue. but yeah, Jimerson can play.

First game 11/5/2019
Always get confused by year. Is it the year at the start of the season or at the end?

Burton looked more and more relaxed with his release after he hit the first one. Last night it looked
like Roche’s release got faster and faster.

Regarding Jimerson, it was pretty wild to see how deadly he shot all night long compared to how badly he airballed that three-pointer as time ran down.

I was wondering this when I heard he was from Richmond - how did we miss on this guy? He plays at two private schools in our backyard. Then goes to Montverde academy in Florida and is their leading scorer and 3 point shooter? And we don't think the kid will want to come home to Richmond to play college basketball? I assume VCU might be wondering the same thing - but he is a solid player and with 2 years remaining - I wonder if he looks to move up in the ranks through transfer portal after this season, which he might be first or second team all A10.

The only reason I can think of for VCU and UR not offering is that he'd already decided he wanted to be away from home. He was a quality player in high school and no red flags that I ever saw.

He's always stood out to me as the type of player we'd want to play for us, good size to guard multiple positions, good shooter and can create a bit of the dribble. Nice player.

Did Roche seem to get more of Goos minutes? I liked lineup of Nelson, Dji,
Roche, Burton and Grace since all 5 had hit 3s and created less double teaming
on Grace in lane. It works so long as we can rebound .
Goose was getting slaughtered on defense by everyone he guarded. The Too Late Flying Fin trick didn’t work. The Roach is a little slow, but he works hard and will run through a pick. He still needs to shoot more. Thrilled to see Dji take some nice shots. His offense is there, he just needs to let go.

Yep, no excuse missing that kid. Hard to believe a kid wants to leave home to go to St. Louis.

eh, you don't not offer just because a kid says he might not want to stay home ... if he even said that. if you really like him, you offer. and you sell the benefits. you might not get him, but you offer.

we (and others) didn't offer for a reason. maybe he was a little slower back then. maybe he didn't defend. maybe we only had one spot and got Burton.

We did end up with an unused schollie in that season, but that was the result of late-changing circumstances. Julius was our only scholarship senior the year before, and Tyler was signed to take his slot.

But then Schneider transferred mid-year and Yates's appeal with the NCAA for an extra season was denied, so we had two more slots open up but only filled one with the Crabtree transfer, and he had to sit out.

I don't know why we didn't offer Jimerson, but VCU didn't either and he had some other solid offers.

The only thing I can think of with that last airball is that he thought a foul was coming for us to put him on the line for two with us up three, and he was hoping to get it as a shooting foul for three shots. But it really didn't look like that was our plan.

There were still 12 seconds left, so if it was a legit attempt, it was way too early. If he'd made it we still would have had a good amount of time to come back down for a game-winning attempt.

I mean I guess it sort of worked out in that they had time for another chance or two after his miss, but they had plenty of time to try to find a better shot without him jacking it up. But again, maybe they were just really trying to avoid going to the line for two when they needed a three.

Well, it helps when you guard the 3 point shooter. We had Jimerson well guarded on that last 3 pointer, many of their other 3 point shots were of the wide open variety because we have a tendency to flock to a guy when he drives to the interior, leaving us exposed to the kick out 3.
