Secret Scrimmage

Wondering how we did, but it's a secret scrimmage, so I suppose I will never know. JMU can't come soon enough for me. Football game today, makes me want to clobber them on the court, even more.

All scrimmages with another team are "secret" by NCAA rule. Exhibitions are open.

Nothing is truly secret, sometimes we hear about the scrimmages, and sometimes we don't.

I think a better way to describe it is to call it a closed scrimage

I believe the rules are that they can't officially keep score. And coaches can't talk about a scrimmage at all before it happens but can afterwards. If they do, they are usually vague.

of course, these could be "double secret" scrimmages thus negating any info at all.

On the Wolfpack board, it was reported that NC State won the scrimmage, 65-54. Of course, we have no idea what rotation, CM used. I'm sure he wanted to see how the new players fared against another team. Jeff Goodman reported that Terry Allen was our standout player, hardly a surprise.

97, good point, there is NO word at all, on the secret scrimmage, other, than apparently we lost by double digits. Who played what minutes, we don't know. Did our young guards have problems protecting the ball? We don't know. Did we get crushed on the boards? We don't know. I'm sure some posters here, do know the answers. And their silence, does bother me. Maybe the loss of Kendall and Alonzo, is going to hurt us more than some of us thought.

Still, it's a scrimmage, a secret one at that. CM may well have played some players decent minutes, that won't see much time on the court in regular season. And if we had a lead at halftime, I'd love to hear that. If we are as good as many of us, think, we should be at least competitive with the Wolfpack.

These secret scrimmages are like NFL preseason games, the final score doesn't matter and isn't indicative of performance during the regular season. It is a time for coaches to test out personnel in a simulated game situation. The coaches aren't trying to win, they are trying to figure out what they have to work with. I am surprised the score is even kept at all.

2011 is right, CM has said he doesn't care about winning or losing scrimmages. If I were the Coach I might want to lose by a few to keep my players hungry. All I have been told is we lost by 8 and didn't shoot well. I didn't ask any more.

fan1, agree. The scrimmages demonstrate to both the players and coaches what they can do. With the current team, they (players and coaches) need to learn about their capabilities against previously unseen competition. The Spiders will be just fine by the time the pukes roll into town. OSC

TB, State is very very good. They are picked to finish around 4th in the ACC. If we lost by 8 then I would say that would be expected. Bottom line is it was good to scrimmage a very good team.I have always thought that these closed scrimmages are better than the so called exhibition games.

The Wolfpack has some size and one very fast guard who defends well also. They also are
physical with their size so it was a good matchup for us to experience. If we could bang with them
then there will be few others that we play with that beef.

I'm sure our freshmen guards got a lot of playing time. If Josh is not returning, we either use Trey a lot at guard, or at least one of the freshmen is going to get a lot of minutes. Good to have them get experience against a team as good as the Wolfpack. Then let's refine our game, by scrimmaging Towson.

Scores in these scrimmages are totally irrelevant to actual season performance. Many times, these scrimmages are officiated by the assistant coaches, coaches can stop the play any time they want to make coaching points, substitutions, or change a defensive scheme. The structure is completely different from an actual game.

That said, NC State is pegged to be one of the better teams in the ACC this coming season, losing to them by 8 or whatever is nothing to be ashamed of or concerned about. Not surprised by the news of poor shooting by our guys, it seems like we always start the season slowly from an outside shooting standpoint anyway.

This "loss" in a pre-season closed, controlled scrimmage is nothing to worry about.

I heard it was SDJ, Julius (Doc) Johnson, Marshall Wood, Terry Allen and Friendshuh.

NC State KenPom #41, we will be alright. Stay strong Spider Fans and remember the ultimate goal for the season.

To finish in KenPom Top 75.

"I expect that will be our starting lineup for the first twelve games."

I would be shocked if that is the starting lineup for one game much less 12. Two of these three, Dion, Trey, and TJ will start and more than likely all three knowing Mooney.

I wondered how long it would take someone to catch that.

It must have been interesting for Mooney to see Henderson vs Wood head to head.

Was White in attendance?

If the above lineup (SDJ, JJ, MW, TA, PF) were to actually start the season as our "starters,"this would signal several things, all of which would be positives. First, we have tremendous depth, since three of these guys will have had to beat out "proven" starters. Second, three guys that are largely "unknowns" (JJ, MW, PF) have made lots of progress. Third, CM's coaching philosophy has "evolved," and he is no longer committed to giving his veterans the start, based primarily on seniority. If these guys are truly our future starters, this would give us a tremendous bench to bring in. Imagine bringing in one of our best offensive players (TJ), our two best defenders (TD, DT), and KF (our redshirt-freshman point guard) off the bench. That would signal that we are 9-deep, with great depth. Finally, this lineup, if it has any significance, might tell us that JJ is currently ahead as our shooting guard (and possibly ahead of JP (freshman) and KF (redshirt-freshman). The thing I like best about the above startign line-up is that we would have 5 proven outside shooters on the floor, TOGETHER! What a concept, for a Princeton-hybrid offense.

Frankly, I am inclined to "blow-off" (or discount) the line-up as "experimental," but I am hopeful that it means that the three "unexpected" starters have worked hard, made good strides during practices, and deserved the "recognition" of starting in a secret scrimmage That, in itself, would be welcome news!

K0 didn't start until part way through his sophomore year despite playing more than many of the actual starters. Mooney has started defensive lineups in the past, so if this were to be the starting lineup I think it would tell us more about the defensive capabilities of the players than their offensive capabilities. I think it is much more likely that this was a highly experimental lineup and not indicative of what to expect when we start playing games.

Assuming we are right about who the starters were, do we have any idea how many minutes anyone played?

Could it be the three unexpected starters were simply the players that Mooney needed to evaluate the most?

If he wasn't concerned with winning or losing this scrimmage, wouldn't that be who he would start?

lol. TJ not starting this year. Ha!

I don't know... I'd be ok with Terry, Shawndre, and TJ not starting this year. If it was because Khwan, Marshall, and Paul were better. :D

That would be some team!

Its a scrimmage so we should take nothing from the results, starting line-ups, etc.... Minor correction on NC State being a top 4 team in the ACC, they were picked 8th in the official preseason poll.

I heard it was SDJ, Julius (Doc) Johnson, Marshall Wood, Terry Allen and Friendshuh.

shot in the dark interpretation on this.

Clearly SJ is our 1, and TA and TJ are our starting front court.

Julius Johnson could start at two and push TD to the three, DT to bench.
Marshall Wood could start at three and push DT to bench. This leaves us a little thin with frontcourt depth unless PF is ready to play meaningful minutes. That is why PF started -- to see if he is ready for the big time.

So this scrimmage was designed in part to see if we can get Julius Johnson and/or Marshall Wood in the starting lineup, or at least see major minutes at the two/three position.
