Sal updates

The quality of that league is all over the place (my high school is in it). Some traditionally good programs like Christ the King but there’s a wide range in there - would be hard to judge but sounds like there’s some quality players on the teams he’s being ranked against.

Hope he can come in and be a contributor, we need someone with that height and length in addition to Grant.

Nowhere did I say or even insinuate that he's no good. Just pointing out that it's tough to get a read on a guy who is rated all over the map, played for a team that didn't score a lot and wasn't one of the top 5 players in a two-county region in New York. I think he'll be on the level of Cayo next year, if I had to guess, which I would take.

The team Sal was selected to has an ACC commit and a junior with a bunch of very high level P5 offers (Duke, Kansas, Syracuse, Indiana, etc https://247sports.com/Recruitment/Kofi-Cockburn-97571/RecruitInterests). I don't see that as an indication his rankings are all over the place, it is right in line with him being a 3* recruit with P5 offers, more similar to Buck, Sherod, Gilyard and Golden than any of our other recruits recently. His high school league was just very strong, with the 18th ranked senior in the country, the 6th ranked junior in the country and a bunch of other P5 commits.

It is hard to tell what level Sal will be at when he gets here, but being selected to the 2nd team of that league is not bad at all. We won't know until games start next year, but I would not be surprised if he is ahead of Cayo offensively. He led his team in scoring as a senior (and there is a Stanford commit on his team) and shot 61% in a very strong league. He also pulled down 8.5 rebounds per game, very good as well. If he can pick up the offense and defense quickly at Richmond he might push for a lot of playing time.

This is why I'm not sure what we have with Sal. Second team all Westchester/Putnam County, NY, for a guy allegedly ranked as the with best power forward in the country and 17 spots ahead of Bryce Golden? Something doesn't add up. Not sure who was on the first team though, so maybe it was a bunch of 5-stars.
Trust your instincts Eight Legger, our eyes are not lying to us. NO WAY that this guy is ahead of Bryce Golden. Cheer for him, hope for him, root for him, encourage him, all great. He may well be a good player in a couple of years, time will tell, but he is not ready to be an immediate impact player in his first season.

I am excited about Sal, and would rather have him than Bryce anyway. Looking at Bryce's film, it seemed like most of the highlights showed him scoring in close on guys 4 or 5 inches shorter than him. I did not see the "wow" plays from him that I saw with Sal. Bryce very well might turn out to be a good one, and sure, I wanted us to get him, but I feel better about Sal's overall game than Bryce's.

Don't underestimate without knowing personal info. It doesn't matter if he is ahead or behind Bryce, we still have a good get!!!
