RPI Home Game

Unfortunately best 32 after NCAA field isn't what always ends up in NIT. Hopefully, not many more AQ upsets that would eat up NIT spots. Only thing good is that Spiders might get a home game and wouldn't have to sit around too many days reliving this loss. We bounced back well during season but this one today is tougher to take.

The Spiders have more talent and should have won this game!

I know some of you do not like it, but SpiderRick is absolutely correct. Spot on!

The Coach changed game strategy at the 10-12 minute mark when the Spiders were dominating and up by 8. If you did not see it live, you may want to go back and watch the tape. The Coach directed the team to start playing deliberately. At somewhere around the 8-minute mark he was circling his finger which means more deliberate - slowdown play (eat the clock).

Even the announcer commented that the Spiders played not to lose. The "playing not to lose strategy" has cost UR game after game over the past 10 years, and quite a few this season as well. The prevent defense frequently causes the team with the lead to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The slowdown strategy is used by many teams. Taking the air out of the ball between the 1-3 minute mark sometimes helps a team win by limiting possessions. The realism of going slowdown between the 8-12 minute mark (as Mooney has done repeatedly) is that the deliberate team is going to lose their lead and lose the game the majority of the time.

I am confident that the facts will back this up. I know that the slowdown strategy is a prime(not the only)reason that the Spiders can't hold a lead late, and why they often lose right at the tail end of games.

The decision to change strategy (and the responsibility) rests solely with the Coach. Coach Mooney put them in a position where they had a good chance to lose yet again from the bench.

Three years ago i bought tickets to second round, we lost to charlotte in first. Last two years bought semi final tickets because cant go friday afternoons and both times they lost to vcu. Ive wasted about 400 bucks so far on the a10 tourney. I had six family and friends coming. Very disappinting again.

Right on!!!!!!

Have seen this too many times this season. We change strategy too early when ahead. While we're ahead & playing well with decent momentum, just keep taking it to an opponent. Late in the game is the time to change game strategy. Unfortunately for us it's a momentum buster, & today we paid the price.

If Bonnies knock off Dayton as well as winner of URI/GW they could throw a wrench into the A-10 list for the NIT.Bonnies are no one's list for anything.

We are always at a disadvantage when we go up against the huge, tax supported state universities! They overwhelm us with their fan numbers and their huge alumni base. Plus many of these schools, including VCU, do not required SAT or ACT for entry into the school. Meanwhile, UR and other private schools not only require SAT...the score must be almost 1600 to get into the school! It is the way it is.

Better next year? 4 juniors who had had plenty of playing time for two years? Frankly for 3 of them very, very little improvement. This should have been the year

Ever since I went to Atlantic city the last year the tourney was up there, and the Spiders didn't, getting to the a10 tourney to watch this inconsistent team and drop a grand to go to NYC hasn't been high on my list of things to do. I could imagine there's a fair amount of folks in the same boat.

A poster on another board claims we had 6 or 7 fans at the game!

If that's true perhaps we should drop to DIII and join the ODAC!

I don't see Michigan in there at all. Are they out of the running for NIT and fall to CBI/CIT/forget it? I was hoping we'd host them here at the RC.

For the 8,675,309th time, WE'RE NOT GOING TO THE ODAC!!!!!!

Now, the NESCAC, maybe......

FRS, why would believe a poster on another board posting "bad" things about UR? they showed the stands regularly and it was clear there were more vcu fans there (are you shocked?) but CLEARLY we had more than 6-7. I would guess 200-300.
