Well - with Jay Wright stepping down and Fordham coach possibly taking over - there are a handful of coaches in flux right now that might pick up the phone if Mooney called.
Would love to see KA on the staff, and think it would make sense. He knows the game (there is a reason why so many PGs are coaches), knows what we are all about, and should be able to recruit some talent here, especially PGs. Like Sman said, we already have Mojo here, so it's not like a big time assistant elsewhere who is maybe ready to be a head coach is going to drop all of that and be the lower assistant here. Just like with transfers, it is easy to say go get all these guys, but it has to be a fit and make sense for them too, and not just us.we have tremendous experience at the top with Mooney and MoJo. this is a lower level assistant coaching job. of course we should give it to KA. he wants to coach. it he can't count on his former coach and alma mater where he's a legend, who can he count on?
Because we are trying to build a program that is a consistent NCAA tournament participant, not some nepotistic employer who gives out jobs to former players to help them out.we have tremendous experience at the top with Mooney and MoJo. this is a lower level assistant coaching job. of course we should give it to KA. he wants to coach. it he can't count on his former coach and alma mater where he's a legend, who can he count on?
And, he has coached before and knows the game, so it's not like the hire would be just because he played here. I can't think of a better guy for this spot. With all the transfers flying around like they do, how about having a guy like KA around, who can share with them how he stayed here all 4 years and went dancing in years 3 and 4.it's a lower level assistant coaching position. you make next to nothing until you're the top assistant. I'm not suggesting handing a job to someone's nephew. we're talking about one of the greatest college PGs ever.
and when a program preaches "family", I think it's important to back up the talk.
I don't know, maybe Jay Wright? Think he will take it? 🤣 🤣 🤣And, he has coached before and knows the game, so it's not like the hire would be just because he played here. I can't think of a better guy for this spot.
But what if MoJo leaves next year for another opportunity. Everyone gets promoted up. Why you want to make sure you have the best people you can get at each position. And you can't give every player who wants to be a coach a slot on your staff. So, KA gets a slot, does that mean if Kendal Anthony or Cedric Lindsey gets slots too if they want to coach, because family.it's a lower level assistant coaching position. you make next to nothing until you're the top assistant. LOL. Reading this board, I think some on here expect him to come here. We are talking lower level assistant coach here. KA has coaching experience, and knows the game. Without looking it up, can anyone even name lower level assistants out there?I don't know, maybe Jay Wright? Think he will take it? 🤣 🤣 🤣
Fine, so throw out some names. Since you don't want KA, who do you want here?Yes, stick to what CM has always done. It's worked so well in the past. 3 NCAA in 17 years. Why change? Keep it "in the family."
I don't know how your run your business, but at mine every position we hire we do a competitive search for. Notwithstanding, this is one of our 4 assistant coaches, so someone who will definitely be in the inner circle. This isn't the video coordinator position we are hiring and even if we were we should do a damn competitive search for it.a competitive search for a lower level assistant, lol. it's a guy who knows and has passion for the game, works hard, and you can stand being around for long hours.
of course hire the best candidate. no reason to think that's not KA.
Well, there are multiple reasons we didn't make the tournament for 4000 days. Not having the best most experienced staff is probably on that list. So maybe just run the program according to best industry/business practices.Bill Dooley was in his 20s, had never coached before, and was Tarrant's assistant. If I remember right Benjy Taylor was on Tarrant's staff as well. Anyone want to criticize that? Can't remember who we had with Belein and don't feel like looking it up, but if anyone wants to share, please do. This seems silly, worrying about who our next assistant might be, as if we would not hire a good fit who knows his stuff.
Nova definitely did not do any search at all for their new head coach. They are a pretty successful program.I don't know how your run your business, but at mine every position we hire we do a competitive search for. If we interview multiple candidates and everyone agrees KA is the best qualified than by all means hire him.
Well, that was essentially an internal promotion. Neptune was with them up until a few months ago.Nova definitely did not do any search at all for their new head coach. They are a pretty successful program.
Never said I didn't want KA. I don't want KA hired only because he played at UR under Mooney and is the safe hire for CM. I want the best candidate hired. You clearly didn't read my prior post. Not surprising though. Pom-poms for anything CM does (or might do).Fine, so throw out some names. Since you don't want KA, who do you want here?
Wow. So, back to the pom pom talk. Great. And, I didn't say I wanted KA only because he played here. But, whatever. Once the pom pom talk comes out, it's time for me to politely be done with you. If you can't have a friendly debate and disagree on things without it having to be about pom poms, it's just not fun and not worth it.Never said I didn't want KA. I'm assuming Joseph is promoted to the top spot. he's certainly qualified.Isn't the opening for an associate head coach? That's certainly not a "lower level" assistant coach.
a few being 12. I get your point though. they definitely know what they're getting. and he's even proven himself more in the past 12 months by landing that class at Fordham.Well, that was essentially an internal promotion. Neptune was with them up until a few months ago.
Yes, not at Nova the last 12 months before that at Nova 120 months?a few being 12. I get your point though. they definitely know what they're getting. and he's even proven himself more in the past 12 months by landing that class at Fordham.
I actually thought he was just hired. Didn't realize he was their head coach for the past year. Lol. But yes, he was on staff for close to a decade at Nova, so they clearly know and want him.a few being 12. What is it that makes several on this board so excited about Maurice Joseph? Maybe he is doing great work at UR, if so, I'm willing to hear what a knowledgeable insider has to say.I'm assuming Joseph is promoted to the top spot. he's certainly qualified.

Joseph was very highly regarded as an up-and-coming assistant coach in the industry when he went to GW. He then became the head coach at the 11th hour right before the season started when the whole thing went down with Lonergan and the AD up there. He wasn't ready to be a head coach yet and GW didn't have a lot to work with after his first year. What is it that makes several on this board so excited about Maurice Joseph? He certainly does not have a coaching track record that would inspire enthusiasm. I recall watching him on the sideline at GW. It was very obvious by watching that he was not even an average A-10 coach. For what it is worth, It didn't take GW long to come to the same conclusion.
And my former student manager friend who has been the girls coach at Cville High for 10 to 15 years now ...Beilein had a strong staff at UR. All assts. went on to D1 head coaching jobs (1 was women's)
Phil Seymore
Jeff Neubauer
Mike Jones
Matt Brown
btw Dooley is still the man regardless, bleeds Richmond red & blue, that was obvious up in Buffalo and he can rock the Paddy Cap like nobody's business
Thanks for the info, and this helps make my point. Yes, a guy like Neubauer went on to be a head coach, but look at his resume when he was here under Beilein. He played for LaSalle until 1993, and his only previous coaching job was an assistant for 3 years at The Citadel. He was 25 when Beilein hired him.Beilein had a strong staff at UR. Dooley is the man? I suffered through four years of his coaching while at UR. I would gladly take any of our coaches before or since over him.Beilein had a strong staff at UR. All assts. went on to D1 head coaching jobs (1 was women's)

I don't think it's the unproven aspect that people are opposed to, it's the idea that Mooney's default seems to be simply hiring former players directly into those roles here and not really bringing many outside guys into them. He could do worse, of course. Our kids for the most part are bright and capable, and those that want to go into coaching are probably likely to excel there. Thanks for the info, and this helps make my point. Mike Jones coached at Sidwell Friends School, and was an assistant at Howard and Furman before joining Beilein here.
Seymore coached with Beilein at Canisius before joining him here.
Matt Brown played at Shippensburg until 1993 and was an assistant coach there for 1 year before being an administrative assistant at Marshall and Florida for 3 years. He then joined Beilein here at 28 years old.
So, very little experience there. All young guys at the time, and I think we did just fine when Beilein was here with these young, mostly unproven assistants. I can't believe how much some on here are worrying about this.
