Paul Atkinson - 2017 Offer

lol. maybe it's us. maybe Kim Lewis has it wrong on his email signature or something. too high a percentage of recruits get this backwards for there not to be an error somewhere.

Perhaps the offer letter comes from an old school printing press and some goof mis-set the type in 1956 and no one knows how to change it...

"Welcome to Richmond University!"

I was waiting for someone else to mention it...

I think our roster would be better if we didn't keep losing recruits to Richmond University...

But to be honest it is a small point, and gets better with success, but never goes away. As we saw with the University of Duke tweet.

Or maybe it is the same person who made the "We are U UR!" ad.

If half of the time we offer a kid and they go out on social media and tweet the name of our school, you would think this is something we want to proactively correct. I highly doubt there are many VCU offers that our tweeting "proud to get an off from the University of Virginia Commonwealth".

It's a branding thing, if lots of people are saying your name wrong, your not going to get good brand recognition. And since lots of recruiting services, local and national media follow high school basketball stars, you could see how this could away from you, if you don't take active steps to correct it. Shouldn't be that complicated to correct.

I think the thing we have in common with Duke (and don't have in common with VCU) in this situation is that our school's brand name is shorter than our school's actual name. In basketball we go by Richmond and Duke goes by Duke. If all your knowledge about a school comes from basketball I can see where someone might say University of Duke or Richmond University, the shorter brand names makes the placing of 'university' ambiguous. VCU's brand name is the acronym for their actual name, you can tell where to put 'university' since the U is at the end of VCU, it doesn't have the ambiguity that Richmond and Duke share.

Agreed, 2011. The school made a conscious effort a few years back to change the primary name in public usage to "Richmond" as opposed to the "University of Richmond." Debatable as to whether that was smart or not. I understand the logic, but now it becomes easier to confuse us with the city in general and obviously some people don't know if we are UR or UR.

I also agree with 97 that it is important to establish our brand accurately, to whatever extent we can. Of course some kids are still only going to hear "Richmond" even if everything we communicate to them says "University of" but hopefully we are trying anyway.

It may happen less frequently than with us, but I believe there was even a player who held a press conference and announced "I am attending The University of Virginia Commonwealth University!"...I'm sure he was just nervous.
As well as the occasional Virginia Commonwealth Commodores...

That was Tevin Mack. Of course, he was just being prescient with his "University of...", as he never got to VCU and instead followed Shaka to Texas.

Every time I hear a commercial for University of Maryland University College I cringe. Yes UMUC is a real school, not sure who thought that name was a good idea.

As I recall, UR Downtown was once University of Richmond University College. OSC

"University College" is a pretty common term for units involved in continuing/non-traditional education. It comes down from the UK educational system.

Knowing that knowing the proper history will be useless. OSC

Lombardy Avenue for UCLA, not Laburnum. And who thought being associated closely with the City of Richmond, with its finely run organization and excellent government officials would be a plus. Forget "One Richmond" and go to "A much Better Richmond"

It's an interesting set of visits. Hard to say how we fit but if he's looking for a good mix of basketball and academics, then I think we could fare well.

Really like Paul (#4 white uniform), good height, decent handle, can pass and shoot. OSC

Another one's gone, another ones's gone, another one bites the dust .... Paul Atkinson to Yale. OSC

The Ivies have been recruiting at a very high level lately, Yale had a nice run in the tourney last year, and Yale is Yale. Wish we could have just got this guy on his visit, but sounds like he committed prior. Too bad. A guy I know had a son that was a big time swimmer apparently. They actually moved to FLA for a couple of year for a big swimming h.s. and his son earned a scholarship to Yale. I see him at a basketball game and his son had transferred to Texas A&M. Dorms were small, New Haven in the winter not really a beautiful city, facilities not great, etc. etc. Just a kind of depressing atmosphere there it sounded like. Wish Atkinson could take a vist to Richmond in November to compare it to Yale in general. Too bad.

I mentioned Ivy aggressive recruiting weeks ago.As my hometown,New Haven use to be a great looking city.No more.
Yale students are advised to be extremely diligent and extremely cautious when leaving campus environs. Its a reason the Yale Corporation has purchased many commercial properties immediately adjacent to the campus gated access.Yale Corp dictates the specific type of enterprise as leasee in order to control the surrounding area. New Haven was the first US city to offer an exchange program for unclean needles used by heroin addicts.

Whyte from St Luke's in New Cannan,CT lives in New Haven,CT. and has been offered by Yale and UR,among others.Wonder where he'll land.

James Jones is a good coach and my golfing buddy when I'm in New Haven. If you get recruited and gain admission to either Yale or Harvard, you are likely going there. There is quiet money to be had in order to pay for the $65,000 price tag.

We are bumping up against the Ivies in our lacrosse recruiting mostly-similar demographics. Both on the Women's and Men's side.Very rarely in other sports.
