our defense was terrific

when things were tough early on in the season there were a lot of calls here to change up the defense. it really looks better now. earlier it seemed we didn't want to double. now we quickly double when there's a mismatch, yet we rotate well enough to cover for the doubler so we aren't leaving guys open. our quick little guards up top never allowed early penetration. we still switch, yet it rarely hurts us now. not sure what's different there. how often was VCU forced into the final 10 seconds of the shot clock? nothing was open. really great defense.

+1. I think if we had rested Kendall for a few minutes, we'd have blown them away. But then, who knew it was going to double overtime. TJ and Terry, looked terrific. We are possibly peaking at the perfect time. Still hoping, Alonzo gets back before the A-10 tournament.

We had open looks for most of the game. I can only think of a couple jump shots for them that were really open looks. our D has been good all year but exceptional the last two games.

Noticed a similarity last night that UR also did in the first vcu game - on all the high picks at the wings and top of the key, UR was dropping two and three guys to the foul line on the switches, daring them to shoot the 3 coming off the pick and they never did. I don't follow UVa at all but having heard of their 'pack-line' defense, I was wondering if this may be a similar wrinkle to what Bennett is doing over there? It was very effective both games and I loved to see it b/c it prevented our undersized forwards from having to come help on penetrators.

Graham is a bulldozer but always goes to his right, would love to see UR force him left should the teams meet in the A10 tourney. He goes right, leads with his shoulder to initiate contact and double clutches. Almost impossible for a single defender to stop b/c of the contact, without drawing a foul or appearing to do so (thought UR got raw end of a couple of those). A good shot blocker like ANO could give weakside help on that double-clutch but he is obviously unavailable.

I thought other than a couple spots in the game (like end of first half) that the defensive rebounding was solid. Trey and Terry did a good job and Trey in particular had some man-up type boards where he ripped the ball from a pack of hands.

Trey is tenacious on defense never quitting going after the ball. Some of his rebounds leave you shaking your head thinking how in the world did he do that?

Credit to Taylor, too, for taking the charge on Graham that every VCU fan is whining about today, even though it was an obvious charge.

Eight, great screen shot there. Clearly shows Deion has his feet set, hands up and outside the circle. Clear charge. That play got lost in the discussion over the play that Deion and Terry made at the end of the game. But that was a huge play by Deion.

And VCU fans are whining, I assume you are going to tell me that the Earth now revolves around the sun and there are 24 hours in a day too. For a program that has won a lot recently, there fan base had a huge inferiority complex.

That screenie doesn't show whether DT was set before Graham went up.

Shooting 15% in this game and 16% in the first game, when I believe they normally shoot 30% from the 3 point line. Once a bad shooting night both games sounds like good defense to me

Ok, I made another one starting sooner, when Graham's feet are both on the ground and he is not touching Taylor at all. Taylor was still clearly set.

nice view there. huge play by DT. Graham doing what he does. couldn't give him the call on that one ... but you can never be sure.
