OT: Woj bomb!

Yes, HPU coach is killing it so far. And I hear they have a nice campus too - which we know in the hoops world is a detriment to success - so he has overcome that to have a two year .800 winning rate.
When I was in college HPU was very active in recruiting richmond area kids as students. Have more HPU grad friends here than UR when I think about it.

A couple mentioned to me that their president when they were students would regularly cite that they wanted to resemble a school like U of R.

I'm not saying he'll win recruting battles with higher conferences. I guess he could if the NIL is excessive, but that's not realistic.
Got my quote from ESPN:
High Point does have a resource advantage over the rest of the league, but the two-year dominance is noteworthy. As one agent said, "He's playing with pocket aces, but he's [still] very good."
If High Point (the University and resources available, not the coach) is playing with pocket aces, what is UR playing with in the A10?

A pair of 8's? Just enough to compete in most hands?

we have very nice facilities. so do some others.
I wonder where we've been in terms of NIL. I doubt we've been at the top, but certainly close enough to it to expect more than a 13 seed.

NIL is the big mystery these days. Being private - UR never discloses anything, and I get it - but I think sometimes, it would be beneficial to disclose some numbers. Example - VCU and Mason have both thrown out numbers of around $3 million for their basketball team NIL Money next year when the schools can pay them directly. IF UR is able to match that or go above it - would it be good publicity to state that and make it public? This way recruits and transfers know - they got money and are paying in line or better than schools in their own conference. By not saying anything - sure we might be more than other schools, but it will be a secret.

Huss is just a shot in the dark. Lots of folks want to go back to the Shaka tree- Some folks like Odom's assistant Henry and others like Theus. Someone threw out Chris Mack as well.

Ed does have ties to American. That's how he landed Odom, so you may be on to something with Simpkins.

No clue, this one may come way out of left field, however, no one wants a retread.

Odom seems to rely on and delegate to Matt Henry a good amount. Unlike Mooney. Theus maybe in future but I expect way too green right now.

The Shaka tree is Mike Morrell at UNCA. I could see that. he should be on our list too but idk how the vcu connection plays.

Just seeing this...wtf Borzello. He's got too many good ones on that list. 2 explanations. the names came from all types of industry sources and I cannot confirm or deny I'm a source. Or we have a leak within the GKiller's Interns.

Funny how Mooney is never mentioned ever on these lists. Not even 1 mention for Moon.

And Odom #1. yet vt4700 was telling me how Mooney>Odom all summer before it was hibernation time. tbf most of u guys missed the boat on vcu.

i would say Jack's, enough to open, not enough to win.

Simpkins is a good one to keep an eye on in general. Second last year and first this year at American in his two years. They are legit too, beat GW pretty handily this season and they are very athletic.

Congrats to Duane Simpkins. Going dancing. Sorta destined to move up I think. We’ll miss out just like we have other coaches (cough cough Odom). Guess what…he’s a good dude too. They exist elsewhere.

That is who I immediately thought of myself. Maybe he can do double duty and teach some welding, er I mean painting classes in his spare time.

I do think it will be interesting if Woj can buy them a top roster.

Wow crazy story and background. Woj doing work. Big Joe could be a big story next season. Just make sure that associate degree isn’t in welding…

Anyone have access to this article? Curious as to how this works.

I know sman has been very skeptical as to the value of having Woj as GM, but it seems in addition to his clout and name, he has been showing quite the imaginative ways to find talent and apparently pay for talent?

Again, we are 5 years behind every trend it seems. I guess when the Princeton O comes back in fashion in 10 years we will be ahead.

I can't read that one, but found the interview with Woj about the 6'10" kid surprising. I thought his GM role was more administrative and NIL centererd. he was actually out there scouting and recruiting this kid. I believe there are rule for how many assistants can be on the road and making contact. didn't think he had that kind of job. if he's doing that on top of everything else, he's very valuable. but I don't think most GM's do that.

It's like the million-dollar half court shot promos...the school takes out an insurance policy that pays out if the kid hits the shot. The school pays a lower known amount regardless of the outcome, and the insurance company takes on the risk.

Take a hypothetical starting point guard, for example: St. Bonaventure could write into his deal that he’d receive a $25,000 bonus if he earns all-conference honors. If he makes the team, Players Health pays out the bonus difference. If not, the company has already secured money from the Bonnies based on the premium paid on the front end.
“We’ve got to position ourselves in those ways,” he said. “What allows us to do that is our partnership with Players Health. The incentives, deals and the ability to be creative in these deals, I have found it gets you to the finish line with people who are really, really trying to find a way to come play for you, or to stay with you. This allows [us] to make a real case financially to do it.”
“I think about the ‘Moneyball’ scene all the time with Brad Pitt [portraying Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane], where he’s sitting in the room and he says to the scouts, ‘If we try to play with the Yankees in here, they’re going to kill us out there,’ or whatever that line was,” he recites. “I think about that every day.”

If Woj turns out to be college basketball’s Billy Beane, the Bonnies will be quite all right.

the problem as I see it is you're competing with schools offering guaranteed NIL as opposed to incentive laden ones.
"if you're all conference we'll give you $100k" loses out to "we'll give you $100k".
But are the Bonnies competing with those schools? Unlike Moneyball - the Bonnies are not competing today with UNC, Duke, Michigan, Ohio State, etc. They are competing with other mid-majors, so if they can offer better packages than they can - they will get better players that will get them to the NCAA tourney. Really - the goal is to become a consistent NCAA tourney team, which will result in more revenue for the school and maybe they eventually compete with the bigger schools - but right now, they don't need to do that.

which schools? I never said they're competing against high majors for recruits. a $25k potential bonus certainly isn't going to sway a kid off the schools you mention.

article says they could offer NIL incentives like adding a $25k bonus for making all-conference as a way to compete despite less NIL money.
I'm saying guaranteed money beats incentive money 100% of the time. a bonus is only a factor if the guaranteed money is equal.

But the bigger schools are likely the ones offering the guaranteed money deals in those ranges. OR - schools that consistently have made the NCAA tourney and have the support. Example - looking at VCU's recent influx of kids in the portal, it appears from the outside they are clearly handing out 100K and more to their players.

I don't know if that can be said for our players or transfers coming in. Maybe we are spending that much, who knows.

Give credit to Woj and Bonnies for pushing the envelope and trying something different. As mentioned on this thread - we will likely be 5 years behind everyone else.

I did find interesting one of the suggested NCAA rule changes if schools opt in to paying athletes - they must disclose what they are paying them. Think it said any deal over $600 must be disclosed.

I think it would really be fascinating to see how much everyone is getting paid. I saw some list the other day of the top ten estimated earners in college basketball for next season and it was bananas. Some of these kids could be set for life after one season of playing college basketball alone with prudent investments and money management 😯
