On to Wofford

Didn't totally fold down the stretch. Fezz was there. Not sure whether it was instant Karma or he was shouting directions from the stands. Either way, a Spiders victory feels good!!!
Undefeated with Coach Fezz in the stands this year. Coincidence?

The Richmond announcers called the Wofford run with about 6 minutes left. Bob Black said this is where this team folds. Beckwith agreed. We were up about 14. Lo and behold, the lead shrunk to 2. Beck told exactly what they should do- throw it to Golden, which they did.

I heard that too. Was really (pleasantly) surprised as the usually stay so positive all of the time. And I know most every Spider fan was thinking it.

The ESPN announcers (one of which played at Wofford I believe) mentioned time after time about Richmond's struggles closing out games. I think Gilly reading the board now :):) , he seemed to be very very judicious about going for steals yesterday. Almost had the record on that deflection that went out of bounds.

Announcers mentioned that Burton may have been under the weather a bit.

Thought Dji looked good again out there. Had the one turnover near mid court in which he just dropped the ball, and seemed like that was all Mooney needed to sit him.

Golden looking very good on offense, but yet again makes the other team's big look like Trevion Williams from Purdue.

We just got a shout out from the announcers! They said "after the Spiders lost those games in the Bahamas they were eviscerated on their message boards" ohhhhh man I wish I had a recording of it.
Heard that as well - thought what a word choice as formal defintion is to disembowel

Gilyard's funny quote on the turnovers: "I've never seen me do that before. It was horrible."

I think those TOs were a one-game aberration. Here's to some rest and recovery and a safe trip out to Iowa.

My two observations from last night.

1. Golden played a hell of a game on both ends. Yeah, he is never going to be mistaken for an all defensive team players out there, but he bodied his man up and offered resistance. He saved our bacon at the end by doing what he does best, backing his man down and using his array of moves around the basket to score.

2. Our defense continues to be god awful. Wofford couldn't hit the broad side of the barn for the first 30 minutes and most of the shots they had were pretty wide open, just didn't fall. Well, they started to fall midway through the second half, because of our defense is god awful.

I just don't see our defense getting any better, I think it is so broken. Guys are constantly getting wide open looks both inside and out with our defense. We will get wins in games where we shoot like we did last night, but if we are not hitting shots at a really high clip, we will be playing at a significant disadvantage because our defense is one big porous sieve.

I also think Golden's defense has been substantially better. and Burton has been noticeably improving as well.

individually we're defending better across the board. mentally we still have problems. we're late on things sometimes, and collapse too far in help sometimes. correctable ... but are we correcting it? doesn't seem like it.

I know a bunch of guys aren't feeling 100%. not making an excuse but sometimes it's a fact. to play as hard as we did and for the most part as well as we did with some guys feeling poorly is impressive to me. I won't overstate a Wofford win, but I'm very happy we gutted it out.

Interesting, the Wofford broadcast team mentioned that we had some guys under the weather. When Burton got off to a slow start they wondered if he was one.

Does NCAA have any kind of Covid protocol defined? I think the answer is no. For instance the NFL has different criteria for vaccinated and non vaxxed players, I think a vaxxed player that tests positive can come back much quicker if produces two negative tests, whereas non vaxxer has a 10 day sit out period or something.

Was thinking if there was an over arching NCAA protocol this season, could help even the playing field, whereas last year Moon botched it pretty badly. Essentially would protect us from Moon and Hardt and the SLU debacle again.

I’m just glad we won that game.

But what the hell was our offense the last 6 minutes? Is our strategy to keep a lead just run clock and Jack up 3’s every possession? We should have closed that game out much easier.

The last 6 minutes wasn't the problem this game. The bad stretch was from 11:00 to just under 6:00 when Wofford hit 4 3s and went on a 20-8 run to pull within 6. After that, we closed the game on a 12-9 run, including Grant, Grant again, and Tyler with huge buckets on 3 straight possessions in the final 2 minutes. The only 3s we took the last 6 minutes were back to back 3s on one possession with over 5 minutes left, so we took none the final 5 minutes.

Apologies to the Pom-Pom squad for mixing up when the 6 minute meltdown was.

Edit - it was actually a 9 minute run, weird how none of them corrected me on that fact?

It doesn’t invalidate the fact that it happened and that our defensive strategy of “hope they miss” and offensive strategy of “Jack up bad 3s” isn’t very effective.

Maybe Mooney will figure it out in year 18. Extend him though right? Such a great coach he makes Richmond so proud

We scored on 5 of 6 possessions from the 4 minute mark to just inside the 1 minute mark, on Grant's runner, 3 layups, and a FT. Not sure how anyone could have a problem with that.

Yes, their 5 minute run happened. And, the other 35 minutes we outscored them 65-44. We were 8-18 from 3, and they were 6-19, yet, what you take away from a game we win is we jack up bad 3s and hope they miss their 3s? Unreal.

At 11:23 we were up 53-35. At the 2:25 mark we were up 64-62. You can ignore this 9 minute run where we were outscored by 16, but it happened.

If the bar for a good performance is “well we didn’t blow the lead” and we aren’t allowed to critique, then we won’t even sniff the tournament. Lots of good in this game but lots of bad, and lots of ugly.

the Pom-Pom squad again changing the facts to fit the narrative. Nine minute run, not 5 minute run. You willfully ignoring the bad to focus only on the good is just incredibly poor analysis. If your takeaway was that we are incredible and this was an easy win where we fired on all cylinders then we are both wasting our time.

For reference, Wofford missed a ton of wide open 3's early on. It wasn't because we were guarding them tight and they missed them, no they just didn't fall.
you realize that pretty much all 3's taken are kind of open, right? I mean, who's taking tightly contested 3's? that's a bad shot.
our guys get open 3's too. and we hit 44% of them last night. I'll take that all day.

All 3’s are pretty much open, so why even try to play defense. Just ignore our problems and hope they go away. Surely it’ll work in year 18

It brings me no pleasure to point out what we do wrong and our weaknesses. But seeing them ignored because we held on after letting a 16 point lead slip to 2 makes me feel the need to yell from the rooftop to fix it instead of ignoring it.

I'm saying their 3's weren't all wide open. even during their hot streak. we defended.

Wofford's a decent team and they hit 6-19 (31.6%) from 3.
we hit 8-18 (44.4%).

yet the complaints the day after a win are that we just jack up bad 3's and hope they miss open ones.
to quote Joe Biden ... come on, man.
this is the wrong game to repeat that narrative.

First time seeing Team in person in long time / yes was exciting game with Woffprd comeback , many players with PT , some no help at all . Crabtree I think more minutes would help . Some players offense nothing with slow defense so no help . Big notice for me is how better pivot defense Grace is better than Golden I was surprised that Golden plays so skinny in base and arms in pivot defense. Golden had good game. I think have to limit 2 short guard playing to special situation .

I miss going to Robbins Center but my son finished cardiology next July and moving back to Richmond so I will see more games.

Coach had good black shoes on , I think Hovde steals his brown ones. Hovde very intense coach I like that. He always has Coach right ear. On some of defense poor plays I thought he was going to jump out of seat.

Biggest play of game near end of gamewas Burton drives right baseline and left hand layin , I think next time he jams that .

LOL. So typical. I think it's the other way around. I think way too many on here ignore the good, and focus on the bad. We went 8- 18 from three, and they went 6-19 from 3., but you focused on the 10 we missed, and the six they made, and act like three point shooting was an issue last night. Laughable.

I guess he expects a shutout. I mean, we held them to 6-19 from 3 and 64 total points, well below their averages in made 3s and points scored, and we still hear non stop complaining. His latest response is "why even try to play defense"? Unbelievable.

Question: am I pom-pom squad for simply pointing out that you were completely inaccurate in your recounting of our offensive strategy in the last 5 minutes of the game? Just want to know where I stand here.

yes kneepad. regardless of accuracy, follow the narrative or you're part of the problem.

No, you’re not Pom-Pom Squad for having that opinion, as I did mention above I was wrong and I had the wrong 5 minute stretch (which was a 9 minute stretch from 11:20 to 2:30).

But if you say we played a great game with no flaws then yes, Pom-Pom squad. If you blindly defend MoonMan and don’t allow criticism, you’re Pom-Pom squad. If you only come on the board after a win and vanish after a loss, you’re Pom-Pom Squad. You’re not Pom-Pom Squad. It’s barely even a squad, they only have the one full-time member
