Official Nuclear Meltdown Losing to Davey w/o Gibbs Thread

Good to know. So you can just let the Spider Club know that you want your $ applied to football (or some other program) and not to the black hole our basketball program has become?

It's not much more than a statement but good to know the option exists if folks want to vote with their pocketbooks and not stop donating to the school at the same time.

The key question is the same every year: Are the players good enough to make the NCAA tournament in spite of the poor coaching? It has only happened with one group in the Mooney era.

Being eternally optimistic we have once again pinned our hopes on next year's incoming freshman. Reality, and probability are likely to leave us frustrated once again. My hope is that these freshman are exceptional enough to overcome the obstacle(s) and rise above the mediocrity. It is a lot to ask.
I'm hoping Gill demands change plus I'm going to start playing the lottery.

Make sure you understand your prior commitments. A certain portion must be undesignated

It is irrational and unfair to expect freshmen to make us top quartile team in the A10. Given a couple of years, and consistent good recruiting over those two years and yes we should be expected to be there, but I have no faith Mooney can coach a team, or the players, to be better than what they bring in when they come.

I dialed back my expectations as well after the Mason game, so honestly expect us lose now but the manner we lost tonight burned me up.

It's not just that we lost to Davidson without their best player but its also:
-allowing wide open 3 after wide open 3
-letting Aldridge torch us again and letting some dude named Rusty light us up
-missing FT's like it is our business
-when we do finally get a stop, Davidson having 3 guys to get the offensive rebound
-Mooney refusing to call time out AGAIN, when a team makes a huge game turning run and our guys are completely out of sorts
-not having a sense of urgency until it is too late.

I've seen this time and time again with this team and frankly over the past 5 years. I am just sick and tired of it. I don't even give a hoot about Friday. Heck, if VCU comes out with heart and we roll out this same old sh*t show, I hope they give us the whipping we deserve.

Spiders obviously watched the NBA All Star game this weekend and were inspired by the defense.

Check Gibbs' stats last two games vs Richmond......NOT A FACTOR. Defense struggles and missed foul shots. Crappy gym and huge unfair home court advantage..they are 12 and 1 at home.....???..

Looked like they didn't have all that many people in attendance, and before the game they mentioned that student attendance isn't what it should be. Sounds familiar. The Gym shouldn't matter. They just got beat.

You are right when it comes to freshman, but if we have the same record with the team next year than I think its more of a successful season than a disappointing one such as this year. It's all relative. If we're 6-7 in conference with the young guys playing a lot next year then I think its a success to date.

Gibbs might not have scored much in our other contests but he sure was a factor. We focused our D on stopping him but others had career nights. Anyone who thinks he wasnt a factor doesnt know basketball.

I agree but then we lose MW and TJC (not to mention SJ, who we seem to have replacements for) and don't have any experienced size in the pipeline, so yea 6-7 with next years team would be ok but the next couple of years don't look great. I'm just hoping beyond hope that something will be done about the situation.

"and don't have any experienced size in the pipeline"

The "system" doesn't require size. Big guys are meant to shoot 3's; rebounding is an afterthought. ;)

I assume your being sarcastic because To defend inside and stop offensive rebound you must have size.

Absolutely. We are in agreement.

I'm someone who appreciates the fact that our big guys can shoot 3's (Mooney's forte), but I'd really like to see much more banging & aggressiveness from our bigs under the goal. After this many years watching the Mooney System, I realize that's not going to happen. I don't believe he recruits bigs to play like bigs. He recruits bigs to be shooters & finesse players.
