ODU IN THE PAST VS. TODAY

in 2017, we went to ODU and led by 2 at half....They scored 20 points in a row to start second half. We lost by 19

Almost a year ago, ODU at the RC. We led by 5 at the half, shot 27% from field in second half and lost by 9.

My point is, we played worse today vs. the last 2 games, but after trailing 2-1, we never trailed for the next 38 minutes.

3/5 of our starting line has been the same for all 3 games. The difference---we've figured out how to win and learned how to make winning plays.

Just a few....

Great analysis!

2017 - ODU was 5-3 on their way to a 25 win season and were 12-2 at home.

2018 - ODU was 8-3, had just beat Syracuse on the road, and ended up winning the CUSA and went dancing.

2019 - ODU was 3-8, had lost 7 straight and now has lost as many games at home as they did in each of the past two seasons. I would also wager that ODU is not winning 20+ games this year, they are not winning the CUSA, and they are not going dancing.

This year's ODU team is significantly worse than the last two. If we played like we did last night against either the 2017 or 2018 ODU team, we most likely would have lost by double digits.

Enjoy the win but don't oversell this thing.

Agree this year’s ODU team is not as good. That said, the Oliver kid will help them make some noise in a weak C-USA. Since they decided to move to C-USA for football and put basketball on the back burner, all that really matters to them is conference play anyway.

You're missing the point. I know what the records were. We had chances to win both those when THEY were the better team.

Last night, we were the better team, played poorly, but made plays to win. We spent the last 2 years not knowing how to make plays.

Not overselling anything.

Any win at ODU is a good win.................wins at ODU have been tough to get...........don't care what their record is......they play us tough year in and year out particularly at their place. We managed to win - and that is what counts................did find of interest that Jeff Jones coached present player Oliver's father when Jones was at UVA ......................

The defense on their final full possession was outstanding. Thankful they did not go 2 for 1, and even a rushed 2 for 1 shot would have been a better shot than the one they ended up getting because we played such good D there. Clutch late 3s from Blake and Grant. Don't care what ODU's record is. This was a good road win. We are 10-1!!!

Totally Agree!

Wonderful thoughts during the joyous season upon us. Though at my age Mooney taking two years to accomplish it I consider too long.

No comment on the overselling but after this thread you have officially become a "squad" member. Congrats.

Defensive team, offensively challenged, had lost 7 in a row playing at home after long road trip needing a win . A desperate wounded dog backed in a corner tied with a state rival with a few seconds to go. We win. I'll take it all day long. I wouldn't want to play them again under those circumstances.

The W is all that matters. What I would have concerns about is that we allowed ODU to dictate the pace of the game the entire 40 minutes. We allowed them to play a defensive half court slug fest and make it a pretty low energy game. Would like to see us assert our will and pace a bit more than we did.

However, I'm never going to complain that much about a road win. This is a down year for ODU, but they are always a difficult match-up for us with both their style and size. We never let them take the lead and always answered their runs with big buckets of our own, even on a night when our three's weren't falling for us.

it is hard to dictate the pace when you don't shoot well. You can't press, etc

Opened this expecting it to be a conversation of all their fans being dressed as empty seats. Or the way it's gone from being a loud venue to requiring a microphone to get fans to cheer.
Well now that you brought it up.

Their arena is beautiful, comfortable seats, great sight lines, having real freshly prepared food in the concessions. Oh my god, can we make that happen with our concessions.

Now the negatives. I know they are 3-8, but man the atmosphere was stale. Lots of empty seats, people rarely got out to cheer their team. Our atmosphere is 10 times better. I had expected given how their fanbase travels and cheers when they play us in Richmond to have a hostile and animated home court. Man, was I mistaken.

Also, our time out entertainment, via video boards and on court blows theirs out of the water. We do a really good job of fan engagement at our games and keeping fans interested and invested during the entire game. It is hands down better than what ODU has going.

Also, you would think given Jeff Jones salary he could buy himself a nice fitted suit, instead of a pair off the rack Dockers from JCPenny for game day.

Ahab, the tent maker, wasn't available for a fitting.

I dont think he missed the point. You said we've had the same 3 out of 5 starters for 3 years, and he presented the fact that they beat a team that for better or worse isn't the same team they played the prior two seasons. I thought he nailed it.
