no masks going forward

Thanks for the info. I don't know whether to like this or dislike it but I don't want to turn this into a political or a mask/no mask debate.

I will say that for me personally, it is disappointing. I was considering attending the Dayton game but was already apprehensive about the potential crowd size. I'm too old to feel comfortable in a crowd where most people aren't wearing masks.

Doing anything they can to get us to show up the last two games. No mask and $5 tickets. Maybe fresh popcorn?

I will say the quantity and quality of food at the robins center has drastically decreased recently. I can remember chick Fil a sandwiches and beef brisket. Now it’s burnt zaxbys and cold pizza.

It was a university-wide decision that UR administration felt was in line with their previously stated goal to loosen restrictions when the case rates were deemed safe. There were only 8 active cases last week.

I can understand why folks would be concerned to remove the mandate but it wasn’t a publicity stunt.

Watching the game on tv is safer. Maybe you should try that!

Not to worry Palm. Just sit in the season ticket holder section, you'll be able to social distance there...

I think I would have kept the masks rule in place till the end of the season, only 2 games left anyways. And its not like they were really enforcing it anyways, so why not just leave it, and then after season update protocols. Only thing you do now by removing it is maybe scare away some ticketholders who won't come. But again - this is our Administration we are talking about. And the fact we are losing games might scare away people more than the masks at this point.

Looks like on the season we are averaging just about 6,000 fans a night. I think that is enough to keep the administration happy. I think anything above 5,000 people to be honest keeps them happy.

The masks don't work anyway. UR finally followed the science. Way too late, but better late than never.

They were probably tired of picking up a couple thousand used masks after the game in the RC and parking lots.

Again, it was a university-wide decision, and the admin is trying to put students first. These decisions are often imperfect. I doubt the decision criteria had a meaningful evaluation of any impact it might have on ticket sales or attendance.

If they don't work - why have doctors and nurses in hospital settings been wearing them since the beginning of time? Has it been just for theatre all these years?
Also - I don't need a scientist or doctor to tell me this simple fact. Put a mask on and sneeze. Then take off the mask and sneeze - your telling me the mask does nothing to prevent particles, molecules, germs, viruses, etc to spread? I put a mask on and breathe- I can hardly feel anything when I hold my hand up to my mouth on the outside of the mask. I take off the mask, and breathe and hold my hand up - I can feel everything.

I think the two main problems with the mask debate and this whole pandemic in general is that 1) Everyone is now an expert 2) If it doesn't work 100%, then it doesn't work.

Everyone is expert - everyone with a smartphone or computer is now an expert because they can read an article, blog, video that supports what they want to believe. For every article you find that says masks don't work, you can find the same amount saying they don't work. For every article out there that says you shouldn't take the vaccine, you can find just as many that say it is perfectly safe. Its the internet - anyone can put anything out there and make it look legit.

100% or else - I don't doubt that there are varying degrees to masks and their effectiveness. But I have a hard time believing, just based off my own experiment of sneezing and feeling my breath, that masks don't work at all. Are some masks better than others - yes. Are masks 100% effective - NO. Nothing is 100% these days. But do KN95 masks stop 50% of the virus coming out of your mouth? 40% 30% How about surgical masks - 20% - 30%. They have to stop something right? Or again - why have they been wearing them in hospitals since the beginning of time? For theatre.

Again - I am not trying to cite articles, scientists, etc - because as I said that will get us no where with the internet. But to say they don't work at all - I just don't believe that. And my point with Robins Center - why now. Just wait 1 more week - what's the point of having 2 maskless games at this point? Unless they have some sort of research on their own that shows if they remove the masks, 500 more people will show up - then okay. But I don't think our department is that sophisticated.

Yes, masks have done a great job limiting the spread of Covid. No question about it. That's why just about everyone has had it even after being "vaccinated." Keep wearing your masks and sneezing into them if you like Trap. Good grief.

That's exactly my point Spider B - your saying since we have largely wore masks but since people still get it, then the masks and I guess you would throw in vaccines, they don't work either. If wearing a mask AND getting vaccine didn't prevent catching the disease 100% - then it must not work and therefore we should not wear them, and I would guess on your response not get the vaccine either, since you can clearly still get COVID if you have the vaccine.

BUt do the vaccines result in midler cases? Milder symptoms? If we didn't wear masks at all during the pandemic - would the death total have been higher? All questions to ask yourself.

And the 3rd thing about mask wearing that this pandemic has highlighted that we already knew about society but this pandemic really brought it front and center - its all ME these days and not about others. Masks by in large are made to prevent the spread of virus being expelled into the air. While they may stop some virus coming into your airways - that is not the main purpose of them. So why is it so hard to help your neighbor, or co-worker, or anyone who might be immunocompromised, or just simply scared of the virus - to wear a mask - a simple covering over your mouth to help others. Something that takes no effort at all and really is not all that umcortable. Again - I would prefer not to wear one, anyone would prefer not to wear a mask. But why is it so hard to wear one to help others? I have no problem wearing it - if it helps prevent the spread or at the very least helps the people around feel better and safer. its the least we can do to help each other in what has been a difficult last 2 years for everyone on the planet.

Oh, so now the virus can go through the mask, but not out of it? Hilarious. Wearing masks don't help anyone. The virus passes through the fabric. But the great thing is you can continue to wear a mask or two or three at the same time if you choose to protect yourself, since you believe they provide protection. Problem solved.

You have done it again Spider B - in your own words.

"Wearing masks don't help everyone" - but they do help some people. And the undeniable fact, based on the science, is that masks are designed to stop the spread coming out of the mouth and nose, and not so much blocking the virus entering the mouth and nose. But common sense would tell you - if most people wore the mask, that would mean less virus circulating in the air, which means less chance for it to infect people.

But your statement is spot on - doesn't help everyone. But if it helps some people, should we put ourselves aside for a moment and wear a mask to help those other people?
You would think this whole mask issue would have brought people together. Who doesn't want to help other people get through a once in a lifetime pandemic (hopefully once, but likely not) - just by wearing a simple mask. But as your statement says or implies - its not about helping other, its about how you feel, and whether or not it helps you - not those around you. And I am not picking on you - you just simply summarized the thoughts and feelings of a lot of people during this pandemic. Its not about helping others, its about helping yourself.

which begs the question ... since there will always be viruses, the coronavirus will continue to mutate, we'll always have strains of the flu each year, bronchitis, etc ...
wearing masks will always help a little. so are you now planning to wear a mask forever to help your fellow man?

Corrected my post for you Trap. Replaced everyone with anyone. But again, you are free to mask as long as you see fit.
So just to clarify - your belief is that masks don't prevent ANY - lets say for lack of better term "PARTICLES" - from exiting someones mouth or nose - a mask doesn't stop anything.

Example - lets say in your normal breathing you release 1000 "particles" - your belief is that all 1000 particles are released into the air whether even if you wear a mask?

And if your answer is YES - as I suspect it will be based on your comments before, then going forward - there really is no need mask in any setting in the future - if they stop nothing, no need for anyone - doctors, dentists, etc to wear them at anytime in the future - correct?

The common mask has proven to be an ineffective way to prevent the spread of covid. The particles are smaller than the fabric, therefore they travel through the mask. That's a fact. It's really that simple. But since you believe you are being a caring neighbor and the mask only blocks particles exhaled and not inhaled (you said the mask only works in one direction) then keep on masking from now on. Wear three masks at a time Trap! No one is preventing you from being a caring person by wearing your mask. Your argument has been proven wrong, but keep masking if you want.

^^^Complete and utter horseshit that displays a fundamental misunderstanding of how masks work. They work even better against smaller particles than they do at the 0.3µm metric used to calculate the 95% efficiency for an N95, for example. Due to Brownian motion and electrostatics, smaller particles like viruses are captured extremely well by the masks. And of course larger droplets and aerosols are also easily captured. No, it's not 100%, but it's awfully good.

God, I've had enough of this crap...two years in, and here we still are.

Thank you for the information and back and forth Spider B. This has been a fun exercise and given me a lot of good information and pretty much confirmed what I already thought.

But could you help me in one area since you appear to be very well versed on the subject of masks and how good they work, maybe more so than me.

I have a knee replacement surgery coming up next month, and then a routine dental appointment 2 months later. In the past - I know doctors have worn masks during surgery to cut down on spreading of viruses and infections and same with dental offices - but based on the information you provided of masks being proven to not work against COVID, and I have to imagine against other viruses as well (no way COVID is the smallest on the planet or first one to figure out the mask - plus Coronoviruses have been around for years, the common cold is part of the Coronvirus family) - but for my surgery and dental appointment, there really is no need for the doctors or nurses to wear masks right? Since they do nothing - it has been theatre all these years and likely just a way to drive up costs on my bill.

So would you suggest I tell them - no need for the mask, I know they do nothing? Or is simply that masks work in all settings, but just not against COVID-19 as you say it has been proven? I just want to make sure I tell my doctors the right information because it seems like they have been tricking us all these years wearing masks during surgeries, right?

And no thanks on the 3 mask suggestion - I will be too easy to pick out in the crowd if I wear 3 masks.

I suspect the gastroenterologists will continue masking 🥴

We will agree to disagree. Enjoy your masks Trap for a long as you see fit.

Most people don't have/have not had Covid. Especially in states with high mask usage/two shots and the booster.

So you'd be OK with the surgeon, nurses, etc., not masking up the next time you get an operation, since masks don't do any good? Good to know!

Ok mask fans…..when are you going to stop wearing a mask?
At my local grocery store and other crowded indoor public places, I'll continue to wear one.

I'm not a fan of masks. But I am a fan of doing reasonable things to stay healthy.

Yes, everybody please wear a mask forever. Most of your faces I really don’t need to see!😜
