New renovations at the RC

I find it hard to believe that students ever rushed for anything at UR except panties. Dueling Banjos? Com'on.

Perhaps true, but hard to believe based on my experience, and as a student, I attended almost every home game (and many on the road including flying with the team on a few) of both football and basketball.

I hope the students return to that same level of enthusiasm someday, but I suspect that it will take a very high elevation of our basketball program above last few years' performances and another national championship or two in football. I can see the latter happening under RH, but I find it hard to imagine with basketball under CM unless there is a serious sitdown with Hardt which results in a new and supported direction.

In all fairness to CM, he has been like a ship without a rudder with respect to ADs for the last several years (Did he and Gill ever meet?), and he strikes me as the type of coach who needs stated goals and requirements and a hands-on AD. I am hoping that CM with the help and standards set forth by Hardt finds a way to turn things around.

I can assure you, Dueling Banjos was played extensively at basketball games in the 1973-74 era, and was very popular. As was Dixie, at football games.

And in those days, students got a ticket coupon book in the fall. You took the coupon book over to the ticket office to redeem the appropriate coupon for a ticket.

I think the decline of the fraternity system has played a large role in the lack of students at games (if what I read from fans who attend current games is true). Especially football. We always had 40-50 brothers at every home FB game, and I expect that was true for the other frats as well.

Fraternity row was alive on home FB weekends, with parties and alums at every lodge, especially at Homecoming. The last few times I've been to games on Homecoming, the lodges were shut down and quiet.

I sometimes park in B5 for football games and the remaining frat houses-whatever those may be-always seem deserted with nothing happening either inside or outside. That’s a 180 degree change from the good ol days.

Yep. :(

Fraternities had more of a presence with tailgate parties this past year. However, getting students to the game is only 1/2 of the problem. The other 1/2 is figuring out how they can stay the whole game

Pretty sure the University doesn’t allow game day events at the lodges anymore (or at least doesn’t allow events with alcohol)

There were a couple of fraternities I know that threw tailgate parties this year. School relaxed a bit on that in hopes of getting more turnout for the games

I know my fellow 1970s-era Pikes have a big presence in the B3 lot before every game. They could probably still put together a competitive Hardyball team. The Omicron Oldies.

Dueling Banjos was a staple of UR basketball games. One or two guys from the student section would run out to mid court and start dancing. Officer Owens, a campus police officer, would walk calmly onto the court and would escort them out. Always a crowd pleaser, usually in the second half.

Don't know what percentage of male students belong to frats today but as a student in the 60's the frats had a very large influence on all of student life including attending football and basketball games en masse. There was always a large number of my frat brothers at every game.

If they were allowed to have alcohol at the events I'm sure student attendance would increase immensely

As a pledge I had to have a bottle of something to sneak (not difficult in those days)
into City Stadium. We always had to watch the Frank Jones Show the next day to see
what happened in the second half-even though we were there. LOL

Isn't the drinking age still 21? How would having alcohol available increase student attendance if they can't legally consume it? Don't think the powers that be would allow minors to drink just for added butts in the seats. So glad this wasn't a concern while I was attending. We were good and lubed for all games we attended.

Totally agree. Since when has "legal" consumption been an issue? A condition of my graduation from UR was that I be placed on probation and attend AA meetings for 4 years, and I was 16 when I graduated high (no pun intended) school.

I’m not saying at the games, I’m saying at the on campus pregame parties. And I’m not suggesting Crutcher be at the parties throwing beers to students under 21 lol :D

Not saying people can’t/don’t sneak alcohol in. But I can tell you that if you wanted a livelier tailgating scene, allowing the frats to openly serve beers on game day would probably improve the atmosphere

I assume "Blandford and Everett" must have been lead donors. Many thanks to them for their leadership and our "Move the Chains" donors.

Go Spiders!

That would be my assumption too. Many thanks to them and everyone who donated. Just like Coach Huesman said during his interview with Black and Drew this morning, facilities was something UR football was really lacking. Not only will they help with getting current players excited, but will play an immense role in recruiting. Renovations look great so far and I can’t wait to see the finished project.

Got to take a tour last night. Weight room is complete, and it sounds as if the team will be using it for the first time this morning. Locker room is about 75% complete, and will be ready when they start camp in August. Nutrition bar and sports medicine areas are about 50% completed. All very impressive and will be huge in recruiting. Will be the nicest facilities in the CAA for sure.

Have they finished all the painting with the walls, graphic designs, and ceiling for weight room and locker rooms?

How were you able to get a tour? Is it open to public?

Does anyone know if the weight room is entirely finished? It looks great, but I’m wondering whether they will do any more painting on the walls or cover up the ceiling pipes.

Personally, I think the pipes and stuff being visible make it more of a place to do serious work and not
a spa. My gym has no ceiling tiles, and I've never heard anyone complain. (Believe me, there are enough gym prima donnas that they would complain. LOL )

Sounds like you pay $10 per month for your gym membership,at the most.
