NCAA Tournament "at large" candidate University of Richmond Women

Updated ESPN bracket has us as an at large at 9 seed facing Illinois in South Carolina region. George Mason has current AQ and is 12 seed. St. Joe’s is 2nd team out. So maybe with a George Mason win tomorrow, A10 will sneak with 3 bids, but most likely will be 2 bids.

With Princeton fighting for an at-large bid, could the Ivy League have three teams in the NCAA tournament for the first time?

I was hoping for a 6 seed if we won the A10 tourny. Seemed reasonable since we were already receiving votes for the top 25, putting us 27.

Would be ridiculous to go from that scenario to out with one loss to a very good team.

Hoping for an 11 (even though we definitely earned better, just like the idea of playin a 6 and then maybe a 3). 10 seed would be ok too, but don't want an 8/9. This team is good enough to make sweet 16 or better, much tougher road as an 8/9, though.

No votes in the AP poll this week. Mason didn't get any either. Fairfield still has 2.

Agreed. Hoping we get bumped to a 10 with the loss. Much better than a 9, having to play a 1 in round 2. 11 is the sweet spot for sure, but I don't think we drop that far.

I'm expecting a 10. I think we r more likely to get 8/9 game over 11. Think they'll show us respect. Tho sometimes u get bumped a seed up or down due to other committee factors. I'll take 11 but I'm also ok with whatever we get. 1st goal is win a game. Let's get that first. I get why ppl think about a run, but we've never even won 1 women's ncaa tournament game ever. Easier to win at higher seed like 7, or even 8/9, although nothing crazy.

Also if we win the 8/9 game, the next vs. 1 would give us lot of exposure. To get a chance to do the near impossible, but even keeping close would be beneficial. Now if I had to choose I'd still stay out of that game too but fine either way.

I get why this article is written...but JOC should be more accurate. Our chances r better than good. I realize what Roussell said but he'll be more diplomatic in this situation. everything in article indicates lock. call the chances great if u don't want to use lock. We're not even on the bubble. I guess we could be near it if there were some crazy amount of bid stealers (which I think is less common in women hoops than mens) but that's it.

3 interesting things from this I didn't know...2 in our favor.

We had a great schedule but sounded like could have been even better. a few teams backed out.

St Joe's AD is committe chair. That helps us too. Possibly St Joe's. They are certainly not going to take Joes over us. I don't think Joes makes it but now maybe outside chance.

"early performance vs. late performance" is on the committee eval criteria. we won 17 in a row late. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is not part of the men's selection criteria? I really thought men eliminated that many years ago, but maybe not. Personally I don't think it should be a factor.

- ESPN still has us as a 9, playing Illinois, but now at Texas. Mason is a 12 playing Kansas State at Ole Miss, while Joe's is the second team out.

- Her Hoops Stats has us as a 10, playing Vandy at NC State. Mason is an 11 playing Michigan State at Duke, while Joe's is the fourth team out.

- College Sports Madness somewhat shockingly has us as an 11 in a First Four game against Princeton for the right to face WVU at LSU. They consider us the fourth-last team in. Mason is a 12 facing Maryland at Kentucky, while Joe's is the second team out.

CBS and The Athletic have not updated since we lost, and NCAA.com should be updating today.

Mason jumped from 4 points to 20, putting them just outside the poll at #26 though they would have needed 44 points to tie for 25th.

vote for who u want but that's some really dumb voting. jmu also ahead of us. watch the ncaa tourney show and they'll understand we're ahead of both.

jmu had a good season but probably gets screwed. sun belt too bad of a conference though. on some very very small level I guess better had they won sun belt and UR competing with less mid majors for bids. but that would mean we're on bubble which we're not. will be interesting how many non majors get at larges. there r deserving ones.

Couple more bracketology updates today:

- NCAA.com has us in an 11-seed First Four game playing Princeton for a shot at Michigan in the Kentucky pod and apparently the last team in? Crazy. They've got Mason above us as a 10 playing Michigan State at Duke. St Joe's not on the radar.

- CBS weirdly has five 10-seeds and five 11-seeds, and we're a 10. They don't have the teams bracketed. Mason is an 11, while St. Joe's looks to be the eighth team out.
 
UR is a lock, question now is seeding. Personally - I would like to see the women outside of the 8-9 game. While that may give a chance at a first round win, it almost certainly guarantees a second round loss because the gap with any 1 seed will be too big. But given our success this season and high net - I don't see them falling below 11 seed. I think this group could win a first round game, then 2nd round - just hope the 3 point shot is the great equalizer and maybe a sweet 16 run happens.

If I were Hardt - I would draft up that extension now and have Rousell sign it before the tourney starts.

It will be impossible to fall below 11. All the 12s and below will be lower-rated auto-bid teams. The question is whether we can stay above the Last Four In tier and avoid a First Four game at the 10 or 11 level.

Not winning the tourney means we are not going to make the 8-9 game, but it actually wouldn't bother me (in retrospect) if that had happened. Win a game and then face one of the top 4 teams in the country? We'd get to be in the national spotlight if that happened, which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

But hopefully we get a 10 or 11 and a good couple matchups and make a run to the Sweet 16.

I like the fact that the A10 Women’s tournament final at the Henrico Sports Center had a bigger attendance than the CAA men’s final in DC and the Big South men’s final in Johnson City. Kudos to Henrico County and the A10 for putting on a good tournament. It’s going back there again next year.

Maybe they could eventually hold a women's OOC tourney event there in the future as well. The RVA invitational or something. Doesn't have to be UR or VCU playing in it, but they could get 1 Virginia team in it and then get 3 others and have a 2 day event.

The Athletic still has us a a nine seed facing Utah in Los Angeles as part of the Spokane region. Winner would take on USC.
 
Final bracketology check-in...not a lot of movement:

- ESPN still has us as a 9-seed playing Illinois in the Texas pod.

- Her Hoops Stats still has us as a 10-seed playing Vandy in the NC State pod.

- College Sports Madness has moved us out of an 11-seed First Four game and up to a 10-seed playing Louisville in the TCU pod.

- The Athletic has us as a 9-seed playing Utah in the Southern Cal pod.

The others have not updated since I last posted, but to recap:

- NCAA.com has us in an 11-seed First Four game against Princeton for the right to face Michigan in the Kentucky pod.

- CBS has us as one of five 10-seeds, but does not bracket teams so we may or may not be in a First Four game at that level.

We got moved into the "Last 4 byes" category on ESPN.com but are still a 9 seed?

Anyway, we're obviously comfortably in and I don't really care what the categorization of it is.... I'd just prefer we weren't an 8 or 9, obviously. I hope they give these girls a chance to make a deeper run.... that they very much deserve a chance at.... instead of faux-rewarding them with a higher seed.

We must be viewed as the weakest 9 on their curve, which indeed puts us as the fourth-last bye. All of the 11s are either auto bids or in First Four, and then Harvard auto is a 10. So the last four byes would be the other three 10s and the weakest 9.

Well then hopefully they won't do us the favor of being the weakest 9 instead of the strongest 10, lol. I assumed it was that... but didn't have the energy to do the s-curve math :) and it seemed strange. Thank you.
