NCAA Extra Season

Anyone know how this really works? Looking at the fall 2021 roster doesn't make sense. Last fall season played, 2019, 5 freshmen played past the 4 game limit (Salyers, Coll, Wheeler, Larson and Smith) and didn't redshirt while the rest of their class did. Going into the 2020 fall season all were listed as R-FR and those 5 guys were listed as SO. Now looking at the 2021 fall roster every single one of them is listed as a R-SO. How does that work? Those 5 players had to take a redshirt for the extra year? If that's the case wouldn't the rest of their class still be classified as R-FR to get their extra year? Will those 5 players still get a redshirt if they end up not playing 4 games (highly unlikely since Salyer,Coll, Wheeler and Larson were starters and Smith split time at RB this spring),or have a season ending injury, like Coll breaking his leg in 1st game? Rule is you get 5 years to play 4. Is it now 6 years to play 5 with 2 redshirt years?

The Covid extension for an extra year of eligibility is a "one off." Player gets 5 years of eligibility without consideration of redshirt year. So if there was a redshirt year they would have 6 years. The not playing 4 games allowed such a year not to be counted. Covid year made it "problematic" of how to classify the players.

I feel like most seniors in a few years won’t take the extra year especially if they have already gone 5 years. Mostly just the seniors this past year are who took advantage of the cOViD free year.
