NCAA Coaching Carousel

Dan is one of my favorite Spiders, especially after coming back from a devastating injury.

Gotta give credit to Mooney with so many former players moving up the coaching ranks. If only his teaching abilities translated to being a better sideline coach.

Geriot one of my all time favorites as well. Always said he played slower than he appeared and he used that to his advantage (cause no one would think of Geriot as quick). Remember one game against St. Bonnie and Nicholson was eating him up and Geriot very subtly hit him in the nut sack and that was the end of the that.

Geriot was a gamer. Tore his ACL and played with big brace on his knee his senior season I believe. Confident player and it translated to results. Even without the athleticism, I think he would have been in for super season if did not tear his ACL. Will be really interesting to follow at Iona, may have to check out a game or two next season.

Which players will he take with him?
Somehow they’ll find Joe Basimile another year of eligibility.

When was the last time VCU got a coaching hire wrong? We’ve stuck with our guy for 20 years in case his replacement wins less than 55% of games, while VCU hires coach after coach who wins the Atlantic 10.

I hope they hire Darius Theus like most of their fans want them to do. He’s never been a head coach. That’s how they’ll get it wrong. Hiring the former star player at his alma mater also pretty much never works.

Ask GMU how they like it?
That one is working so far, no doubt. Generally they don’t (see Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin, Aaron McKie, etc). Look at vcu’s baseball program: they hired a young former vcu player and they’re like 4-20. Unfortunately for us, I suspect they’ll learn from that mistake and not hire Theus.

Being told expect Mike Morrill at UNC Ashville as the next coach at the school on Broad Street (SOBS).

SUrprisingly he only makes about 150K at UNCA, but they amended his contract last week to match the best Big South coaches, so that might get him a little more. I think VCU could pay him triple that and it would still be better value for money than what we pay Mooney.

Who is saying that? Their beat writer is saying Pitino is top choice fwiw. I was originally thinking Morrell would be a likely choice not realizing a guy like Pitino was available or willing. But because all the good MW teams r leaving without New Mex they will be stuck in a weak conf. so it could really happen.

Funny mention of academics on this thread and another thread. Ask google and grok and chat to find u last player that was denied entry or ruled academically ineligible. Maybe in Ivy league but not at Duke, Uva or State. New rules.
Caleb Love couldn't get into Michigan after going to UNC, but Arizona didn't have any problem letting him in.

Totally agree. This is a thing of the past it seems. Even UR has gotten past this from what it seems.
