NCAA Coaching Carousel

They really don't. It is basically too difficult to run effectively in the shorter shot clock days. Remember - up till 1993 shot clock was 45 seconds, then taken down to 35 in 1993, and then 30 in 2015. Going down to 30 was a big hit. By the time the ball gets over half court - your at 24 seconds. And we all know - the Princeton offense likes to create movement for about 10-15 seconds away from the basket to start to setup their offense, but then - you only got 7-9 seconds left to get a shot.

The other reason PO was so good is by holding the ball on offense, it limited defense. Limited possessions. But today - with 30 seconds - possessions are created.

I think Mooney and staff should do a full 180. Watch old school Loyola Marymount film all summer. And next year - lets just go full run and gun. Some key principles from that offense - take first 3 point shot available, everyone but shooter goes for rebound, constant full court pressure - with idea of giving up 2 point basket for 3 pointer on other end, typically shooting within first 10 seconds of shot clock. Catch everyone off guard, keep it a secret and first game lets score 120 points.
Ha! “the full 180” sounds like the Lou Goetz offense circa 1979…I believe the marketing slogan was “running like never before!”

Recollections are hazy, but w/o researching I believe we had no trouble running up triple digits w/o shot clock or 3FG.

Of course it was against quite a few D-II and D-III programs.

Go Spiders!

Our roster is bad enough right now that next year could be another upper single digit to low double digit win year. That is going to make things mighty uncomfortable. Already saw massive empty seats for the VCU game, students chanting "Fire Mooney", have to think the NIL guys are not happy.

He does that 2 years and a row and you still think we just hold the course. Yeah, if he pulls out a slightly above .500 season next year, I think they will sell us and themselves on "we are on the upswing" but another year like this one, heck no.

Another year like this one and they will sell you on the fact that this happened in 2018 and 2019, and then in 2020 we were robbed on NCAA bid by COVID, and then won an NCAA game in 2022. So by sticking with him - we got 2 bids (I think its only one, because those kids graduate without COVID) and UR will do the same this time around and see what happens.

Looks like Will Wade is headed to NC State. Need to get things finalized and McNeese plays in the tourney tomorrow, but seems to be all but a done deal.

I wonder if they will mention who were Freshmen & Sophomores in 2018/2019 and upperclassmen in 2020.
I also wonder if the 2024-2025 freshmen will do the same in 2026-2027…

Yeah, but back then we had Gilly, Golden, Sherod, Buck on the roster and everyone could see the potential of this group. Who we got right now on the roster? Literally no one. He'd better hope that 4 of the 5 freshman on next years team can come in and show that same promise, otherwise the only part of the argument that holds merit is the 2 really bad years at the front end.

And I always wonder when you say all this stuff through the "eyes" of the administration. Do they think we are all that stupid to believe this OR are they that stupid that they believe it themselves?

Are you saying you don’t expect Tanner & Tyne to equal Gilyard & Golden in 2026-2027?

I agree. And honestly - gone are the days of kids sticking around and building a team with a HS kid you recruit and he sticks around 3-4 years. I think now it is safe to expect you will have 4-6 transfers coming in every year. Another reason I would not have redshirted anyone - why redshirt them, when it is probably an over 50% chance those kids will not be here all 4-5 years. So we likely redshirted them and it will benefit another school in the end.

I think the administration doesn't care. They just know they have to put out a reason, and they don't care if you think its dumb or silly.

The transfer portal opens on March 24 this year. It will be interesting to see who is out there that UR can get, and who from UR will join the portal.

Agreed. Pretty sad statement, but we have an overabundance of evidence. All of their paychecks are still cashing and as long as daddy warbucks is happy and keeps dumping loads of money into the program, their jobs are easy.

Exactly. I know Tanner plays a different position than Golden, but the disparity between Tyne and Gilly is large enough to drive a truck through. A better comparison for Tanner is Burton, those two are not even in the same stratosphere.

I'm sure Tanner and Tyne will both get better, neither are going to make the jump needed to be all A-10 players, both would be decent bench players, but both will start next year and play major minutes.

If the press can get it with an FOIA request, might as well just save everybody some time and effort and skip that step.

Low buyout for Odom. Also of note, interesting the transparency with their Athletic Department vs ours. Guess they have nothing to hide.

His contract was already out there publicly. VCU is way more transparent but they're also not just being "nice". They know it was already released and discussed by a number of sources. the RTD had the actual contract. Pretty sure we talked about it on here a couple years ago too. IIRC, and since we talked about buyouts earlier, VCU if they fired Odom owed him it all. But there was an offset. which can end up in a negotiated settlement early with some type type of lower lump sum anyway.

I’m pretty sure VCU is way more transparent because they’re a public institution. As much as we’d all like to know the deetz on CMs contract, there’s some pretty good rationale for not sharing any more of it than you’re obliged to, which is little.

For sure. But the reason why doesn’t change fact they r indeed way more transparent.

Yes, the guy writing the article is a UVA beat writer I believe, and sounds like this is not typical cooperation - that was what I was going off mostly. Like anything, I'm sure VCU could delay the form to provide the info until after Odom is a week into his new job in Charlottesville if they really wanted to. Meanwhile, we extend Mooney in the middle of the night via interim AD.

By law, public bodies in Virginia have to respond to a FOIA request within 5 days. Any request for public records is technically a foia request, so it’s just easier to send the contract to the guy writing the article - even if he didn’t call it a foia request.

2nd shortest tenured Richmond basketball assistant coach? This one felt inevitable from when he was hired…

At some point, it feels like Texas is the problem rather than its coaches. Rick Barnes doesn't look so bad anymore, does he?

Yeah Barnes looks quite good. Chris Beard had em going and would have continued rolling there imo. His team why Rodney got gig. But u can’t beat up a girl.
