NCAA Coaching Carousel

Nice work 23. Very nice. Your place on committee is secure. It will be a glorious day when activated. But we are doing the ever important prep work. and we have to because Hardt is asleep under his desk.

Coach at UCSD is a stud imo. Also had to navigate UCSD into Big West I'd love but he's probably sticking to West Coast and will get a job out there but u take that shot.

Yep Russ Turner. I think he's always wanted to get back East, been rumored for jobs in past. He's a winner. Little bit of tough rep but that's because he demands defense (you'll appreciate) & he got heat from the LBGTQ community and media for a comment after NCAA tourney. Calling a guy Queen when his last name was King. Totally overblown but it did set him back a few years.

Aniother west coast is Chris Gerlufsen at San Fran. Now moving to Richmond would be lateral so who knows how viable. idk how much he makes. but I believ much less than our Moon man. He went to Randy Mac and from Philly, tho the latter could easily be a negative.
I recall, and no can't remember the year, but Turner was on a radio show openly campaigning for a shot at the vacant VCU job. Dont think he got an interview even. But he has been pretty darn good at Irvine, but not many NCAA's to show for it. Roanoke guy, played on same HS team as Curtis Blair and George Lynch.

Roussell is gone if he wants to move up the coaching ladder. I don't think there is anything we can do to prevent that. But that is the question, is does he like living in RVA with his family, can we give him a bump in salary to keep in happy. But if he wants to go, we can't match P5 money nor the opportunity to coach at that level.
Don’t know what kind of $ P5 coaches make for womens’ bb. However, if UR truly values Roussell to stay, what is keeping us from ponying up the money? Certainly would think there are sources. So is it a question of “won’t pay” or “can’t pay”? If he wants to coach at a P5 school, that is another matter. One caveat - if we retain him, hope they are not stupid and do a 10 year extension.

I agree- probably our best hope right now is not a lot of jobs open up, which then maybe he stays 1-2 more years until one opens up he wants and can get.

From a roster perspective - they should still be good enough to be a top 2-3 A10 team next year, assuming they keep the key players. They lose Hill, Budnik, and Alston, and then Camden and Jimenez are key role players. BUT - they still have Doogan and Ullstrom and Sweeney, and Dewey has played as a reserve this year. Assuming they should get some good transfers - they have the central pieces to keep this going another year - but that assumes Doogan and Ullstrom stick around and don't leave for money at a bigger school.

Sat with Roussell's family at tourny. I made clear how much we loved him, they made it clear he was happy here. They felt a good place fo him.

Wake just finished 17th in the ACC, a year after finishing 14th. They have a third-year head coach from American who appears to be in over her head. Let's hope they stick it out with her another year. As we know, they are always an attractive leap for academic-minded UR coaches.

UVA is probably going to replace its men's coach. Virginia just ended the season 15-17, 8-12ACC. Ron Sanchez was a quick replacement for Tony Bennett at the start of this season. UVA has to be moving on, I expect they will pick Ryan Odom.

If NC State doesn't get him first.

Any reason that Roussell can't coach MEN? I mean, we have one coach we want to show the door, and another coach who will definitely be moving up. I say we keep everything in-house.

We’d all be in favor of a swap. But it’s same reason we can’t pay Mooney to work at the D Hall. & I loved D Hall that’s no shot at our wonderful d hall employees. But contracts specifically don’t allow such things unfortunately. If u were asking seriously.

this is deja vu from 7 years ago when we sucked for 2 years. fast forward to today ...

we sucked this year but Mooney has a bunch of years remaining.
we lose 20 games next year but like in 2019, our youth shows a ton of promise.
we show major improvement in 26-27 with a 20 win season.
we make the NCAA's in 27-28 and extend Mooney to 2033.

does he get to ride on the bus back?
Wow ... since Odom lives within shouting distance of me, I can do some reconnaissance for the group once VCU's season eventually ends ... I sure would think he would take the UVA job if offered more than NC State where certain ppl think he is the frontrunner ...

NC State has always had unrealistic expectations for itself, but at the same time it has amazing facilities, a huge fanbase and is willing to spend a ton of cash. That triangle dynamic would be like UR (Duke), UVA (UNC) and VCU (NC State) all being located within 20 minutes of each other.

I've said this in other threads but our pitch to Roussell for him to stay is quite a good one, especially if we are willing to pay more in salary and NIL. Really the only thing we can't compete with is if he wants to be in P5 for the sake of the P5 name. The ceiling can be theoretically higher too for P5s in terms of national success, money, and resources.

However, Richmond is at a real cross-roads right now. We can easily match or come close to P5 money and resources, especially now with the NCAA house settlement if we choose to. I do have faith that Richmond will try and compensate Roussell and our women's program as much as possible. Basketball is our flagship sport. For the first time (ever?) or at least long time we have great success in women's basketball with fan support and garnering growing national recognition. We will care and likely make more of an effort to maintain that, then lets say if a P5 wanted our lacrosse coach. I don't imagine we are going to pony up the P5 salary for our non-basketball sports. For basketball, I think we will.

So assuming we match the salary/NIL resources as much as possible, then why Richmond? Well for these reasons:
- Essentially have a job here as long as he wants. There will not be nearly the same external pressures here like at P5s in years he doesn't well. Plus we know what he is capable of and will be more patient with him to achieve it.
- If he stays at Richmond for his career or at least awhile, he has a chance to cement himself as our greatest coach ever (in any sport). Would be a legend.
- Familiarity/comfort with the city and university. He has worked with Hardt since his Bucknell days. So he knows the kind of relationship and expectations that he has here then the uncertainty of a P5 AD.
- We have a ton of returning talent this year and quite frankly probably every year. Recruiting continues to be excellent, so there is no reason why we can't be top of conference every year. Especially if we devote a lot of NIL resources for him.
- A10 is a top 8 conference and continuing to get better. Plenty of opportunity for national recognition at a conference level. Even at an individual level, we received AP votes for top 25 multiple weeks. There is no reason to think that we can't become a premier team at the mid-major level like Gonzaga for men's basketball especially if we give him the NIL resources. We will continue to have excellent OOC schedules and get into top OOC tournaments.
- Hopefully the family likes Richmond and has established a good life for them here

I’d go all in on Roussell and women’s basketball. As you said, it should be easier to elevate into P5 territory there than in the men’s game, and he’s a proven builder and winner who sustains his success, unlike Mooney who gets a taste of it and then yaks all over himself immediately.

I’m with you, let’s go all in. Would love to see us be nationally respected in basketball, the 2nd most popular college sport next to football. If other P5 teams follow Georgia’s model of breakdown for NIL, then around $900K will go to women’s basketball. We should absolutely do that. $900K for women’s NIL under Roussell will get a ton more ROI from it than $2 million under Mooney. School has to see the potential in that and plus the women’s game continues to grow. Looking at box office reports, we were averaging around 1.5-2K fans. We even had more than 3K in some games too. Imagine we got to a level where we consistently are considered a top 25 program and make NCAA every year. We will certainly recoup a lot of the expenses with ticket and NCAA revenue than we would have pre-Roussell era.

Give Rousell a blank check and tell him to write what he wants for both his salary and NIL to stay here. Let’s at least have one basketball program at UR that can sustain success and perform/exceed the expectations of an A10 program year in and year out.
