This is according to sports-reference.com, and notes that it is since 1985-86. I haven't investigated why the caveat, but I believe it is because that is the first year it was tracked as an official stat?

I was interested how close Gilyard is to the career top 10, as opposed to how close to Pepe Sanchez. Here's what I see right now, and this appears to be inclusive of last night.

Yep, steals weren't an official NCAA stat until '85–'86.

Sports Reference's list is missing Drexel's Michael Anderson, who had 341 steals in the mid-'80s. Not sure why he's not on the list...he's in their database:

Edit: I just realized why...his freshman year was '84–'85, the year before steals became official. So his 84 steals that year aren't officially counted by the NCAA.

Edit 2: And yet, he's still included on the NCAA's record book list.

Too bad we missed all these games. I think Jake had a decent shot at the record, but he doesn't now. Should end up in the top 5, though.

Interestingly, Linehan had 17 steals in an injury-shortened 6-game junior year.

Also interestingly (to me, at least), not on the list is Mookie Blaylock, who had an absurd 281 steals in his two years at OU.

This is why I made the comment in the St. Mary's thread. Juvaris Hayes of Merrimack had more steals than Linehan by a country mile. The "NCAA Career Steals Record" is really the NCAA Division I Career Steals Record.

I realize the situation is different, as it was his school that was D2, then D1. But he kinda got screwed out of both records since they moved up during his career. They wouldn't even name him the NCAA Division I steals leader for last year (he was), his senior season, because Merrimack was in their transition year.

Exactly, it is the player's team's division not the opponent's division.

Thread revival time! Gilly tied Pepe Sanchez tonight for the A-10 career steals record, and they sit tied for 4th in NCAA history. (Weber's 374 isn't an A-10 record because VCU was still in the CAA for his freshman year.)

Jake should easily pass Briante Weber’s total of 374 in far fewer games. It took Weber 127, and Jake has now played 119 and has 369.

He needs 17 steals in the next three games to beat Linehan’s record in the same number of games.
