Mike Houston to Charlotte

If Houston walks, it is due to JMU dragging its feet to go FBS. Dillweeds are still fuming having to watch ODU and LU passing them on the "FBS Train"!

what are they waiting for, an aac invite or have they just had no interest from any fbs conf?

Why pay more to win less? No market to speak of, a party fan base that supports them WHEN they’re winning, don’t have a lot of other sports, historically terrible basketball.

They’ve got a good FCS program, a new basketball facility. That should help but unless they move the needle in hoops their best outcome is a new mid Atlantic based conference to be formed. No need to jump to cusa or sunbelt and no way in hell AAC will add them.

JMU is biding their time concerning a move to FBS and no plans are imminent. Ferrum has it right - they get great support now in the FCS. They are 2016 national champs, runner up in 2017, and alive in the playoffs this year. Would gain nothing at this point moving to FBS. Why would they want to do that? Main concern for me is Spiders have to find a way to beat them on the gridiron. We are tied with them at 18 wins each in our rivalry but have dropped 3 in a row. Only time worse was 1987-91 when we dropped 5 in a row. Other than that concern our rivalry with them is terrific and good for both schools.

Edit - not the first time in this thread I needed to make a correction..............thanks Broc...........

North Dakota State is the defending national champion. JMU lost to them in the championship game last year, 13 to 17, but I agree that JMU seems to be on a different trajectory than we are and we need to correct that.
I think that JMU will have their hands full with Colgate, but even if they survive, I see little chance of them beating NDSU.

Charlotte probably feels like he used them to flush out better schools/offers (ex. ECU)

Spider now in the mix at Charlotte:

One of the sport’s youngest and most intriguing Group of 5 jobs took a turn this week when James Madison head coach Mike Houston interviewed with the 49ers (the school offered Houston the job during the interview) and agreed verbally on Wednesday morning. Charlotte immediately called off its search and didn’t finish interviewing its other candidates.

Meanwhile, East Carolina finalized plans to fire head coach Scottie Montgomery on Wednesday night — and chase Houston, a name on ECU’s radar since his JMU team beat the Pirates by 20 in 2017.

Houston has long wanted to return to his native North Carolina and positioned Charlotte and ECU against one another. Meanwhile, Charlotte returned to evaluating other candidates, most notably Austin Peay head coach Will Healy and Kentucky offensive coordinator Eddie Gran.

ecu has had some football success over the years but has always lost any coach who did well there. certainly a better job than charlotte at this point though charlotte is a nice place to live while greenville, well, maybe closer to the beach.

I really don’t like this. If the NCAA can restrict recruiting, transfers etc. they should restrict coach hiring until the season is over

That would not be practical and would infringe on the ability of coaches to seek employment where and when they wish. Regulation of student-athletes is an entirely different matter.

Sure seems like Houston to ECU is the likely outcome. Will be interesting if Houston pulls a Rocco today

If I’m Russ Huesman, I’m calling every single JMU verbal commit and seeing if they want to second guess their decision. JMU’s reign is over. Back to irrelevancy for them!

Any Jmu verbals we were in with before are still fair game, just like our verbals are. If there are one or more that fill a need we have, make the call.

No.Kids will uncommit verbals.A text from us sends a more succinct message as” our continued interest”

Many JMU verbals would not qualify for UR admittance.

6 local RVA/DC JMU verbals which have UR offers can be easily sent a text.

Why? what is the difference? If you take that tack; the current rules infringe on the ability of students to seek to work else where.

student/athletes, no matter at what school, are not employees. yes, at some schools they help to create lots of money, which goes to support scores of other sports which do not create money but also provide a free education to young men and women. if student athletes had no restrictions on transferring, it would lead to total chaos. do feel they should have freedom but with some restrictions.

I don't want to have no restrictions on students, I want it on coaches. It is just as disruptive to competition as you agree having students change schools at will would be. Waiting for negotiations, contracts, etc to only start after some date following the season would not restrict anybody's rights to employment.

agree but this how it is done. athletic directors have lists of individuals they would be interested in hiring and they will begin discussions, feeling out any interest, normally with reps, as soon as they can, just prudent. if they all waited until seasons were over, way behind the curve and don't want my athletic director handcuffed from being ahead of the curve. it is competitive and you want all the advantages you can obtain.

My point is it is not going to happen. Students have no restrictions on where they can choose to work. The NCAA regulations are about participation on college athletic teams.

ECU played their cards well and got the coach they wanted. Houston is 80-25 overall as a college head coach.
