Mens - URI @ RC Sat 1/11 6pm

What was Mooney thinking leaving his best shooter on the bench?
Actually couldn't sub him in there I don't think. He was out before they scored and they took a 30 sec. timeout. Don't think we are allowed to sub there. Could if they took a full timeout. Silly rule, but pretty sure thats the rule.

It debatable whether it was a good move to take him out after the FT because we had no timeouts. So had URI scored and NOT taken a timeout, we would have had to go on offense without him. But he is awful defensively, so I guess felt like he needed to take him out.

Guessing they (announcers) don't really know that rule (assuming I am right - which I may not be). But I do think thats the rule and its the only thing that makes sense!

FIRE MOONEY
FIRE MOONEY
FIRE MOONEY

WTF. NFL coaches get fired non stop for mismanaging clock but HAVING YOUR GUY WHO HAS 28 POINTS ON THE BENCH FOR A POSSESSION DOWN 1 WITH 21 SECONDS LEFT AFTER A TIMEOUT??

Lunacy.

FIRE MOONEY.

PS - props to Ungerer for asking twice why Dusan wasn’t in. Bob Black’s response was silence. Twice. Clock those hours Philly Bob and eat some cheesesteaks with Moon. F grade announcing by Philly Bob.

Nobody on our team was really playing great defense, he should have kept him in the game. Dusan was our only guy scoring and was making all of his free throws.

I agree with many posters above in that Nescovic should have never been subbed off in the first place. As others pointed out, we did not have any timeouts left so what was the plan to bring him back in for the final offensive position? This is regardless of whether URI made it or missed. Didn’t make sense to me.

Coach didn’t know he can’t sub when refs went to check the clock? We didn’t have any time outs - how was the Princeton grad planning on being able to sub him back in?

Just another awful end of game execution for the mythical “great coach”, we’ve seen a lot of those in 20 years. End of regulation - Dusan doesn’t touch the ball, end of OT - he’s sitting on the bench - wtf?

Even better, he said "it happened twice"!!! So after it happened the first time tonight, YOU KNEW. So why the F did you let it happen AGAIN with the game on the line in overtime?? Unbelievable.

I don’t think it was possible for URI to play any worse in that game and even in the 1st half it never felt like the Spiders were going to win. The RC atmosphere is mirroring the program and has bottomed out too.

As far as the Dusan substitutions, it is another case of outsmarting yourself. Then there was the beautifully run play at the end of OT. The team and staff in turn was so worried about getting fouled which of course is a strategy, but with the atrocious 3 pt shooting I am not so sure that was even going to happen.

I have to say it was the worst coaching job I have ever experienced in the RC, but Moon is definitely feeling the pressure even if it is only in his own head. His jacket was off and his sleeves rolled up from the start of the game. He knows he has assembled a team that is far from where he needs it to be. His one go-to guy is out for the season. He has 2 program guys taking shots that definitely weren’t what he wanted at the end of regulation and in OT (possession before the final disaster). Has a player calling the one timeout they had in OT worried about a potential tie-up and the Spiders had the arrow. Ugly with a capital U.

The wasted timeout in OT and the botched end game play down 3 were both because guys on UR couldn't catch passes (Walz and AP.)

We're just not very good at basic basketball, passing, shooting, dribbling.

Here are some other interesting observations from tonight’s greatest show of mirth:

1. CM gets big mad when Neskovic shoots early in the clock, even if he’s wide open. And instead seems happier when we jack up a clock beater falling sideways. Over a 7-footer.
2. The team apparently only has 3.00 guards. Maybe 3.05 based on how quickly jack graham makes a mistake.
3. This team actually shoots free throws well.
4. A decent way into the 2nd half we had three starters who collectively had 0 points. I mean, that’s super hard to do.

So, yeah.

I addressed this in the other thread also, but this focus (Mooney et al.) on the 'rule' being the issue is pure insanity. How do you expect to get him back in the game regardless of the rule? You have no timeouts... and you know you have no timeouts. What magical mechanism will allow you to sub him back in the game.... after a miss or make?

And this game was basically close the entire second part of the second half.... and this was literally the first time you went offense/defense the ENTIRE game. I legitimately can NOT believe i watched 2.5 hours of this to watch him get subbed out with no recourse (and the 'rule' is not the issue). Seriously, even if he didn't know the rule (and we can discuss this separately) he somehow KNEW that Miller was gonna take a TO or the refs were gonna stop the game to check the clock after a make?
