Mens: Marist Game Thread @ RC: Sat 11/9 6pm ESPN+

I believe this is our first buy-game loss since December 2020 vs. Hofstra. I didn’t really expect this team to be that good, but definitely didn’t think we’d be losing buy-games bad. Ugh. Looks like we’re back to 2017-2019.

Mooney. Zero adjustments, zero idea of his best lineups. Maybe he was too busy finalizing the schedule until last Friday.

Never started shooting 3s down 5 inside the last minute of play. You can't be down 5 and take only 2s while the other team makes all their FTs. I guess Moon wasn't a math major.

What a disappointment. What a joke.

0-1 vs D1.

OOC Grade - F. Will stay this way unless the next 12 games are wins.

God that was bad. Had opportunity for $5 tickets. Glad I didn’t waste my money. Watched the women’s game and was solidly entertained.

Marist clearly looked like the better team. Faster, more athletic, and wanted it more. Our defense is horrid.

Tyne gets too out of control, and obviously most everybody had trouble shooting. D-Lo clearly tried to put the team on his back as a leader should…valiant effort, but not enough.

Also, to get on the players a bit - the defense by the guards and most egregiously, the wings, was an absolute horror show. And Beagle was brutal too, couldn't handle a switch the entire game. Marist did whatever they wanted and had free looks from 3 all game, then just got all the offensive rebounds they needed when they missed.

Can't state enough what a clownshow it is to start 0-1 vs D1 with this OOC schedule.

Clown.

Show.

I know this is our 2nd home game but this feels like a typical Mooney loss or bad game to start the season.

everything about the "bad" mooney teams all wrapped up in one game. The single worst thing about this is how little impact last year seems to have had on Moon and his philosophy. We were an "anti-moon" team year. Defensively oriented, not totally three dependent at all, actually rebounded (at least defensively) etc. and surprised everyone. Looking at this team, its like that never happened. We can't keep anyone in front of us and our help and recover and flying dutchmen kicks in.

Don't love that at the first sign of trouble we turn to 3 point shooters who dont offer much else and, as it turns out, don't actually shoot the three all that great either

6m left first half - 37-28 Spiders
5m left second half - 67-59 Marist

Outscored 39-22 over 21 minutes of play throughout the middle of the game. By Marist. Who just lost to Harvard by 13.

I'd say that I can't wrap my head around it, but of course I can because we have a leafy campus and a coach-for-life who wins at a 55% clip. Nothing will ever change. I don't know why I expect it.

My expectations are clarly the issue with my enjoyment of the program.

Exactly. Last year was apparently the result of accidentally recruiting tough athletic defenders. Bigs was basically a perimeter shooter at Wofford. And the player from WCU was a last last second pick up. Boydens emphasis on defense has not been put on the backbone, but thrown entirely out of the kitchen.

that made me laugh actually.

agree on 23's comment above. last year, the UR defense could switch all screens not involving Neal and Bigelow/Dji could pick up the guards no problem. This year, it's two small guards flanked by wings/forwards who appear to all be sub-par defenders, and when Beagle is in, a big who isn't good on defense either. Tonight it led to nonstop breakdowns, open shots, 2nd chance points and getting trolled by Rothstein.

Last year appears like the aberration. Extend Moon (retroactive to last year's success, which will be cited for 4+ more years.)

This I found very concerning. They were longer and more athletic and shot right over our diminutive guards. I have beat the drums about our wings not being athletic enough, but didn't think it would be so obvious vs Marist.

Burn JROB's redshirt. NOW. Section 9's eyes don't lie. We need dudes that can compete.

It’s comical at this point. I was just laughing at the end. Typical Mooney, who got extended before this year btw.

Some/most on this board will never learn. All the talk about running through this OOC schedule with the exception of Auburn was wishful thinking. Mooney is a Princeton grad. He knew what he had when the schedule was put together despite all the it's so hard talk. Keep drinking whatever is in Mooney's cup. LOL.

Pascarelli (number 5) was 5 for 8 from 3. He looks like a Jordan King. He killed us down the stretch. Price (24) was 6-10 from 3. I thought the Spiders D overall was good, but those 2 had some daylight and were just great from 3. They were easily the best shooters in the game. However, the Spiders' offense, especially in the second half was lost- pass the ball around, no shots, small guy drive and try to throw up a shot-look familiar?
We have two bigs-never parked near the hoop-no shots. I didn't see the Mount Olive game, but after the Spiders scored 101, I had visions. Tonight brought me back down. Marist looked poised on offense, Spiders did not.

3 of 4 times we have come int a half and looked terrible. That's coaching and understanding your team and putting guys out there who can play well together.

When Moon took a timeout that wasn't after a score by us (or even by Marist) and there were still 5m left, it was obvious he knew the panic button had been pushed. 15 points in 15 minutes of a half culminating with a couple of awful turnovers/dreadful offensive possessions finally got him to break the glass and use a TO. Jordan King wasn't out there to cover for him tonight.

Just found out it was Marist’s first buy game win since 2018…… yikes

If it wasn't obvious as of yesterday that we need to win the A10 tournament to get a bid, it certainly is tonight.

5 months of warm up games - hopefully we keep Competing, improving our Fluidity, and stop running into teams that shoot 50% from 3 on 100% wide-open looks. Maybe we'll make the 2nd round of the A10s this year.

I said it b4 the summer extension…they wouldn’t risk a poor season this season and then having only 2 years left & being in situation where much harder (for anyone else tho maybe not UR) to extend again. 24 year job security for what we’ve gotten is amazing.

1 at large bid.

3 NCAA tournament appearances.

There are no other goalposts, as far as I'm concerned. Other things are nice and all but they're all a shortening of the real goal to justify the fact that 3 NCAAs is what we got in 2 decades.

Hardt is probably already pregaming in Lewisboro.
