Mens - GW @RC - 12/31 4pm ESPN+

He gets mad with teammates a decent amount. body language noticeable on tv broadcasts. But I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. I don’t know the dynamic between guys maybe we need it, but I get 23 comment. He also seems happy when they do well fwiw. He had right to be upset for dLo not giving up ball on fast break & taking on 2 players instead.
Are you sure that’s not resting Bosnia face?

All wins right now are good. Very physical game. I worry about JR. He seems to be in on lot of physical plays and really doesn’t need more injuries. Anomaly - Waltz and Beagle attempt 2 shots and score 3 points between them???? Gonna need more points out of center position vs better teams. On the other hand, Waltz with 15 boards and Beagle with 4. That’s impressive.

If Beagle and Walz grab 15-20 rebounds a game, 4-6 assists and 4-6 points, I would be happy.
Beagle is just not a very polished offensive player or a very tough banger. I like Walz getting the
most minutes.

Really happy for the guys. We have all been hard on them this year, but they probably feel worse than all of us the way they played OOC. It was nice to see them playing with great emotion and intensity, especially the final 10 minutes after being down 13. That was a great comeback. Nice to see Tanner, who I have been critical of,
hit a huge 3 late and make a positive impact. The pass to AP for the 3 was a huge play late. Dusan and Hunt continue to be our best players and we will need them both to score a lot to win.

A couple things we could have done differently late. After Hunt put us up 3 with 9.4 seconds left, I would have liked to see some pressure to make them take a couple seconds longer to bring it up. I feel sometimes we foul too early up 3, and fouling with 6.5 like we did gives them a chance to make both, with enough time for us to either miss a FT or turn it over, leading to a possible loss in regulation. I would like to go at least under 5 and preferably under 4 before fouling. Applying more defensive back court pressure after the Delonnie FTs with 9.4 left would have helped with that. Also, AP needs to grab the rebound and not tap it out after that FT miss by them with 6.5. We were fortunate to get the ball there.

But, overall it was nice seeing a win. Maybe a fresh start in conference play gives everyone a chance to just reset a little, regroup as a team, find some chemistry, and just play better basketball.

A couple observations:

1. Defense was much better, we were in guys faces, not cheating as much on help defense.
2. Delonnie was super clutch to close. We put the ball in his hands, he got to the line, he converted
3. Was really confused as to why Dusan only got 18 minutes, he is our more consistent scorer on the team, not sure why he played so little in the second half. And no, I don't see Dusan as unliked by his teammates. He does play with a lot of passion and is not afraid of getting in a teammates face, but he was also out there celebrating when AP hit his big 3. Both him and AP play with a ton of competitive spirit.
4. Tanner continues to give us some good minutes. He gave us zero early on, lost his starting spot, but see him playing now with some confidence out there now.
5. Our offense continues to be pretty horrid. Mooney despite your proclamations, we are not a good shooting team. We came back when we stopped launching 3 balls and drove to the hoop. We also got nothing from our big men on offense. I am utterly perplexed how having Mike Walz stand out at the 3 point line with his back to the hoop is a staple of our offense. We are playing 4 on 5 every single time when we run that and no wonder we can't get anything going inside. Beagle was a sloppy mess out there yesterday and Mooney couldn't play him because of that either.

Best win of the season by far though (I know that is not saying much). Good to see the team respond and judging from post game comments, coaches but the guys through the wringer the past few days and they responded.

Good observations. The improved defense seems to be due to Mooney actually focusing on it in practice and enforcing the effort. Which drives me crazy that this is not a staple.
Dusan is a bit of an enigma. My eyes don't lies. YES, we need an alpha scorer. But whereas others don't look at the basket, he basically is the opposite. He does not look to move ball. The limited playing time may have been due to this while only shooting 1 for 6 from 3. Bunch of early in the shot clock jack's from him seemed to be getting some looks from the other guys on the court.
But he did do a good job going hard to the basket late in the game.
Nice for the guys to get a w, been a tough season so far.
Will have to see how the effort travels away.
Walz and Beagle both passed up wide open 10 footers, more than once. Ungerer commented pretty strongly.
Liked what I saw from Tanner. Just needs to stay aggressive and shoot with confidence.

Watch out. I got a feeling this team finds a way to win 9-10 A10 games - we will beat the lower end teams, lose to the higher teams and probably have 1-2 surprising wins along the way. The season will be looked upon as a success as the Spiders rebound from a terrible OOC start to finish 7-9th place in the A10. Win 1 game in the A10 tourney, and then go home and say the future is bright.

I said early season that I’d hope to see Walz get a dozen points a game as starting center. Don’t think that’s unrealistic as a center and given the stats of several centers prior to him. He’s averaging under 5 a game with 6 plus boards. That number is slightly skewed due to him bringing down 15 boards last night. He’s not going to get anywhere near 15 night in and out. Beagle averages over 9 points and has shown he can score double digits. Last night he certainly did not show it offensively, but season to date he looks to score much more than Walz. Last night both passed up open shots. One time Walz got a rebound under goal, had wide open shot, and passed out to another player. We need points out of center position and not unrealistic to expect that. Be aggressive.

Mostly agree, but we desperately needed defense and rebounding last night - Walz got the bulk of the center minutes and gave what we needed, and we won.

You got all of that from THIS game??

Not really. Just a hunch. Lot of negativity on the board - and I feel like when that happens - Mooney and team find a way to give a glimmer of hope for the future. They get 9 wins or more in the A10 play this year - the administration will be so happy with the turnaround you might see an extension come his way.

Good home win for the Spiders. As others have said there was a different energy level and the defense was generally solid. The offensive movement looked much better too, but of course the shots weren’t falling.

Hopefully the home games remain competitive and we see a few where the 3s are being hit in the expected frequency. As far as away games, I expect to see the slide back to the historical norm. Because of this, I think the high water mark is 7 conference wins, but I don’t think the A10 is strong by any means so maybe they manage a few more.

Regardless, we all know that the number of wins accumulated this year will not impact anything. The administration is all in with the status quo and have no expectations of excellence. All is well in Spiderland.

Walz is currently 7th in the country in defensive rebounding percentage. He was a top defensive rebounder even before the GW game. Taking out the GW game he was averaging 5.2 rebounds in ~15 minutes which is very good.

this is my favorite prediction of all the predictions. 9-9 would be 14-17 and that spells extension at Richmond. brilliant.

I'm not sure if Trap is serious or trolling, but that is Richmond basketball. I had not listened to a Bob Black broadcast in awhile. Forgot what a Homer he is. At one point Buchanan drove into the lane, 3 or 4 guys collapsed, he passed to a wide open shooter for as clean a look as you can get. He did happen to miss, and Bob exclaims Great Defense!! Huh? But that is the blurred reality in which it seems like Trap is trolling, but he probably is not.

Any possibility that the improvement on defense correlates with the reduced minutes for Dusan?
Not sure why this comment hasn't gotten more attention.... because yeah I think this is one of the (if not the) primary dilemmas right now in terms of rotation. He's not good defensively, and he MUST be out there offensively, IMO. So, i'll say it one more time.... how about we play some zone or something? Keep him out there... but maybe hide him a bit? Instead of sitting him for long stretches where we go completely stagnant? This really can't be this hard. He CAN'T sit for eight minutes on this team. That isn't a thing.

There was a point in the second half where we had cut the lead to 5? for the first time after climbing all the way back.. and he went under a screen on Drumgoole .... who didn't really even come off an actual screen or anything, lol. Drumgoole just ran straight to the top of the three point line from the baseline.... and drilled a three. It was like his sixth? of the second half lol.... I thought at that point it was probably over. I give these guys.... as I have all year... a ton of credit for the way they're competing. I like watching him and AP out there. I don't even really care about the tech that AP got a while back. Sure.... get yourself under control, but i'd rather watch him dial it back ... than have that fire not be there. But these guys are fighting and want it.... even GWIII (warm up on) is fired up on the bench all game. I love to see it.

I'd just love to see some variation strategically that shows that we're thinking about how to solve these problems as a whole. And typically, i don't see it. I'm not saying it's not happening..... but I'm almost never seeing it... and that's frustrating to me.

With that said, again... really proud of the guys and its a great win and hope they can build on it. They could've quit once they got down in the second half.... and they fought their asses off to come back again.

Trap picked us to beat Auburn.

In same game Ungerer described the ooc as “somewhat disappointing”. Now I like Ungerer to me he’s the highlight of season. I liked him a ton as a player. Impressive for first season on mic imo esp with big shoes to fill. He’s in a tough spot finding positives. He’s the new guy he gets some free passes. But u don’t gain credibility doing that. It was the worst ooc schedule & the worst performance imaginable. Our best win was Maine? U don’t have to call it the atrocity that it was but u know calling it disappointing or bad isn’t ripping us apart either.

But then I thought maybe he’s just telling the truth. Philly Bob could have told him what to say. Because that’s probably how the admin described it. Only “somewhat disappointing”….u know maybe we mildly underperformed. It’s hard out there. That’s the actual fear.

Agree, Ungerer has done a really good job. I did listen to a game earlier in the year, and do notice the homerism creeping in, which I would assume is BB either rubbing off, or some type of """memo""" getting delivered. For instance, on the that great defense call by BB, he half heartedly agreed. He did comment strongly on either Walz, or think it was actually Beagle - passing up a wide open 10 footer. In general, very nice job.

Always think Trap is trolling from the perspective of how he thinks the administration looks at things. While I have little faith in our athletic administration, I do think it is a bit overdone. I don't think anyone is going to look at a sub. 500 season and be offering Mooney an extension, even our very low bar triumvirate as 23 calls them would have a tough time with that.

My hope with the PQ part of things is that now with the NIL, he can't operate in quite the bubble he has and some of these other NIL sugar daddies that wrote large checks, they can't all be happy and thinking this is the best we can do. They can't be all his and Mooney's boys can they? There has to be someone in this group who really wants to win and hates the fact that we are stuck at 56% and consistently made to be our arch rivals, bitches.

Wasn't sure if we beat GW because for the first time I had three grandsons with me (usually have one) who were cheering loudly for the Spiders or if it was because Delo refused to lose? Speaking of Delo it was terrific to see how pumped he was for the post game interview and also after that still fired up yelling out as he left the court. That kind of enthuisiam is contagious...................In first half we had very few free throw shots and the Colonials/GW Revolutionaries had 8 or 9 ...Wasn't until Dusan and Delo starting driving strongly to the hoop that we got to the line with Dusan 8 of 8 and Delo 7 of 8. Of interest was how the refs called the game - lots of contact away from the hoop not called but drives to the hoop contact usually called...........

I noticed this also. It seemed like when our bigs got the ball at the top of the key or in the post that they were getting mauled... and our cutters were getting held up with no whistles. The main problem with this for me..... is not that we're getting penalized for this on the offense end...... but on defense we're not bodying anyone til they actually get to the basket.... so it hurts us on both sides, lol.
