Agree. Good effort out of centers - really good and contribution also JB. Guards - Tyne and White score 6 between them. Need way more from guards. Obviously we’re not gonna see real mins for GW3 this year. Moon is parking him on the bench.
I guess Moon is mixing lineups with hopes of getting to 10 wins this season? So that means we must win 5 of the remaining games cause I’m throwing out 2 D2 wins. If that’s the case, we’ll need to play something like .500 rest of season. Probability of that doesn’t seem great.
Yeah, I appreciate the feedback. Obviously, the other guy I was talking about was Walz... hes been terrific IMO... and looks like hes getting better.
That being said, I actually find it IMPOSSIBLE to believe that Beagle has a higher block or defensive rebounding rate than AP... but fair enough. Its somewhat irrelevant since Walz and Beagle playing together isn't the debate since that's only happened maybe once or twice this year (and I think by accident LOL). The question in my mind is.... who do you play with either one of them...... AP or one of the off guards? And... it's who would we have benefited from the most considering that Bailey was basically the only threat on the court the entire night on the other side.... and you would literally have to have all three of them (B Artis, Tyne, and Tanner) in there to not have AP on the court also AND it happened the ENTIRE second part of the second half. I'm completely lost at some of the decisions being made regarding our rotation at this point. I start asking myself .... did Roche or AP get hurt at some point that I didn't see?
Could have at least put AP on Dunkin’ with some more height and quickness.
So while I often find ways that I disapprove of CMs strategy, I did say to my friend at halftime “whatever he’s doing is working”, we were up. I mean, we couldn’t stop Bailey but Durkin had been a non factor.
Then things kind of fell apart at several points, so I don’t know if we tried to play 3D chess or Davidson figured some things out.
I will say that there are still questionable decisions around our guard selections. B. Artis gave us 27 minutes and was a non factor on offense, although I’m glad he only took one 3pt shot. I still think the Prez could tilt things in our favor if he had more than a minute. I honestly don’t know why CM bothers if he’s not going to let him play thru a mistake here or there.

At least in the second half and especially the last 5 minutes, Davidson looked like they knew what to do on offense and they did it. The Spiders pass the ball around and around the perimeter with no meaning then as the clock winds down its desparation. Why not stick to what you were doing earlier in the game? Also, every Spider missed 3 is a turnover. Imagine if just a few of those misses resulted in a Spider rebound-game changer.
you nailed it for me Ferrum...if we couldn't build a team more successful than this one coming off a 23-10 season and with some fairly recent A-10 and NCAA Tournament success, how in the heck will we build one coming off of this woeful season.
Other than possible immediate playing time, there's not really a compelling reason to come to our program that I can think of...total rebuild situation, no big NIL $, unusual basketball philosophy that takes time to meld, etc. etc.
you're right that in 2017 and 2018 seasons Golden, Gilyard, Sherrod and company gave us hope for the future...if our two red shirts can't break this lineup, I hope our three incoming freshmen are stronger than anything we've seen since Burton...otherwise to future looks awful dim...
the timing of this collapse could not be worse...with college basketball radically changing, we sit at NET #242...with very little credible leverage within the changing environment...it's a terrible place to be and very sad!
I hope I've got enough seasons left to see us climb out of this hole!

Not happy to see the result but felt very confident in the prediction based on 20 years of data.
It’s sad mojo. That’s why I expect to hear it’s all about the 2 redshirts - 2 guys who apparently weren’t ready to help this year - and the incoming frosh. Next best class. Catch ncaa lightning in a bottle. Maybe in 3 years. We give Moon all the rope he wants to catch it. Why we r so accepting of being that kind of program is what’s so tough to take.
I just wish that when we sold out our university and athletic department to a billionaire and told Bobby Ukrop to f off, we would of gotten more championships out of it instead of facilities and PR headaches and a zombie athletic department led by a guy who treats this as his retirement gig.
There were a few positives in this specific game, but likely mostly because Davidson generally plays the same finesse game that Mooney likes to play. Tyne finally hit a reverse layup. Walz showed some degree of a post game and scored. Tanner stole a ball and took it in for a score (although a bit awkward). Roche was ready to go at the jump and was matching Baileys output at the beginning of the games and was disruptive on defense too.
But we still didn’t see a full team effort and instead saw lost concentration at key points in the game. Hopefully there is at least one game where we see all the pieces working together for a full 40 minutes.
As far as building, I have had the same concern since the NCAA trip and could not see Mooney as being a coach that could leverage the portal. The only chance the Spiders have with Mooney at the helm is the 3 year development plan. Of course, he has to recruit the right core and keep the team together. Team culture seems to be Mooney’s best attribute, so the key is really getting the right recruits in the door. But we know that a team full of underclassmen is going to get pushed around for at least a year and more likely two, so it is going to be rough sledding.

Our 242 Net is very much deserving. We are one of the worst teams in the country, Quad 4 in every way. Our guard room is terrible, probably the worst in the conference. Neither of our point guards can score, run the offense or defend worth a hoot. Our best player is a 1 year grad transfer who is also a defensive liability. We have a bunch of other spare parts that might fit well on good teams as complimentary players (Walz, Beagle Tanner, AP, Roche), but they are thrust in much larger roles here because our roster is terrible and they look outclassed.
And our multi-million dollar coach knows how to coach one way only, is consistently outcoached after half time and end of game situations.
And yes, the future looks bleak. Mooney is gonna sell us on the super freshman class he has coming in and that will buy him at least 2 more years because our administration is a bunch of suckers and doesn't like to work very hard or demand very much.

The Davidson game wasn't that bad. We shot 4.2% from the field. They made 2 more 3PTs than we did and we didn't have much of an answer for Bailey. I might have gone with a triangle and two on him. They shot more FTs than we did. Other than that, Waltz played really well. Except we lost.
