Mens 2024 - 2025 Polls/Rankings

Oh I get it. But if we'd beaten UNI and Wichita St to be 18-4 last year, would we have been getting at large buzz? The metrics - I'm trying to recall here, so correct me if I'm mistaken - said otherwise by end of year, no? I thought it would have bumped us like 5 NET spots up to have won those games, and neither were a Q1 game that would have added value as a win (instead of being an anchor as a loss.)
I think 18-4 would have definitely had us in the picture. We will never know, but I just feel 10-3 OOC with wins over UNLV, UNI, and Wichita St, though not great wins, along with an 8-0 A-10 start would have gotten us a lot of attention, even after losing to VCU to put us at 18-4.

i agree ... The UNI game was so winnable ... worst game of the season except for the last 3

Dayton has figured out how to game the system. They're the only team in this league that could have lost three road games in conference and still somehow comfortably get an at-large spot.

Not really. They went 3-4 Q1 and 5-3 Q2 with 0 Q3/4 losses. That's more than a good enough resume for an at large.

I think we will finish higher than 167. A ceiling of 62 seems fair for this simulation given our weaker schedule and uncertainty of performance with a lot of newcomers.

the "floor" is ridiculous unless they're predicting a ton of injuries ... in which case anyone can be #357.

Is it odd that every median rank is below the preseason rank?

Also, Jack Godar is not good at math. Simple subtraction, Jack. SLU does not have one of the widest variances overall as teams 7-15 all have wider variance than SLU. (I'm aware the first part stipulates top 6, it's the 2nd part of the sentence that is wrong.)

And are they really the ceiling and floor if they are only the 5th and 95th percentile of the simulations?

Feeling A10 putting Spiders in at 8th more in-line for me more than 11th from Kenpom. SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, Big East split most of PAC12 ratings from last year into 2024-25 with kenpom. Guess adding Cal, Stanford, and SMU didn't help the ACC.

A10 moved up to a solid 7th to start closer to MVC than ending last season. A10 OOC schedule as a whole just seems weak but assuming other mid conferences have gone the same route? Would like to see us playing a few MWC teams in the future if can't get P5 ones since appears A10/MWC most likely mid conferences with shots at a at-large.

Good matchups this season ....
Dayton-UNLV
VCU-Colo St and New Mexico
St Bon-Utah St

Very interesting article where A10 commissioner, Bernadette, sits down and talks to A10Talk about a variety of things including: thoughts on scheduling alliances and strategies for getting better games scheduled, potential A10 expansion candidates, specialty match-ups to celebrate A10 50th anniversary next season.

As far as scheduling alliances go, I would love for us to have alliances with one or more of these conferences in this order: New Pac 12, AAC, new MWC, WCC, MVFC.

As far as expansion candidates, I think the only two we should entertain the idea of them joining are Charleston and Wichita State

I like that Bernadette is trying to be proactive in thinking about how A10 can position itself as the best mid major conferences in a day-and-age where power conferences are trying to take over (Taking from MWC and AAC). Trying to have more neutral site games or even doing our own MTE are interesting ideas.

I get the VCU love based on their history, just not sure how/if this roster stacks up? Also they signed a legit head coach that was probably in line for a big conference job, so they probably have the most coveted (i.e. best) coach along with SLU. But just not sure they have elite talent, but maybe that is an indictment of the A10 or just the fact of so much roster turnover across the conference due to the portal.

We will find out tonight when they face D3 ST Mary’s who according to channel 12 eliminated them from the NCAA a few years ago.

How Randy Bennett has fallen. ;)

VCU has some talent, but we'll see if it's enough to finish 1st. You are right, could be that the A-10 without any great teams makes VCU a convenient pick, especially when looking at their consistent success.

Backcourt is elite imo. Deep, veteran, big guards. Winning formula. They easily handled uva picked 5th out of 18 acc teams too. A scrimmage sure & came at time when uva distracted by Bennett retirement but possibly an indicator. The good news is we play them twice & have a big say in results. I like that. The bad news is 9-25 & vcu owning Richmond.

you know we have to go through the "shoveling dirt on their grave" phase at some point of the season might as well get it over with now 😆

I did now have to take a peak at the roster, and it is a very good and experienced backcourt at VCU. I am hoping Bam Bam gets disgruntled with his touches and blows up the chemistry, and Shulga flips on his Big East back to VCU again and transfers mid season to St. Johns.

it's a solid roster. and there's no great A10 team that's obviously better.
Dayton is always good but seems to be struggling with the rebuild this year. just exhibitions, but got killed by 24 vs Xavier and beat Ashland (?) by 9.
SLU is a whole new team.
SJU is coming off a 9-9 A10 season.
most teams including us are replacing a bunch of pieces. just tough to know who's going to put it together.

Agree, VCU seems to be "old" and have as much or more returning production as anybody. So that makes them easier to pick.
Did you say old?

“VCU among country's most experienced teams

The Rams will enter the 2024-25 season with five fifth-year players in Jackson, Shulga, Russell, Bamisile and Clark.

Only 10 schools in the country have more players in their fifth year, or later, of eligibility. Several others also have five on their rosters. Oklahoma State has the most in the nation with eight. “

I've sent my lunch money in already.

That's kind of insane...stretching the whole thing out over a week. But man, really tilts thing in favor of the top regular season teams. Need 7 wins in 7 days to take the championship if you're a bottom 4 seed.
I like the value of the top seeds. The further down, the more games you ought to play, kudos to the Sunbelt!
