Maryland 11/25

Wilson is the only dog I see on the team with regularity. I can only think of a handful of players who fit that description over the years. I know Jaynel will have it when he steps on tbe court next year but that doesn’t help us this year. I think Dji can be but hasn’t played enough to see all of it,

Since Buckingham left we do not have the mentality of running down the court at full speed and getting between an opponent and the basket on the way to the hoop. The number of unimpeded shots by opponents continues on an upward projectory. Taking contact appears out of the question. Tyler Burton at times has done that but has he been told not to?
One of the reasons why we miss Blake.

When the games get intense late, the offense often ends up hinging on whether or not we hit 3's or not. Down the stretch when it gets nip and tuck the offense does not run like it normally does. Which would be fine if we were good with that change to our offense. But rarely we seem to be good.
Wanted to comment on this, great point Mc. When it got tight late, we freaking panicked and rushed up shots, did not resemble the offense we were running before. And yes LI and sman, unfortunately I watched the game this time so u can't try to fluff it off. And Gilly when there are three minutes on the clock, no need to try to let the inbounds pass roll to half court. The offensive panic was just a moon trait again.

Does Gilyard have steal record yet? I don’t think so but honestly I don’t know. If so maybe we can ask him to stay in front of his man. I literally saw him do an almost 360 to surrender his position & try for the steal on other side. If u r wondering it did not work. It’s one thing to come from behind or the side but that...

The good thing about playing such a solid OOC schedule is we still have some chances for some real good wins. Kenpom has Miss St at 48 and NC St at 65 right now. Let's get those 2 and finish the OOC strong and we will be in great shape.

As for Jacob, I think some of you are just looking for someome to blame. His steals are a huge weapon for us, and many times they both start runs for us, and end other team's runs. I don't see his missing steals being much of a factor. It was Maryland's transition buckets that hurt us yesterday, not our half court defense.

Let's hope Kenpom is accurate. This season I'm not sure his preseason element is as accurate as usual.

My NET Rank for OOC based solely on this season performance is below. Let's hope that it is either wrong or changes before season end.

NCC 223 H
Utah ST 45 N
GA ST 85 H
Drake 35 A
Hofstra 71 H
MD 113 N
Miss ST 33 N
Wofford 136 A
UNI 233 A
Toledo 138 H
NC ST 137 N
ODU 331 H
Bucknell 248 H

nobody is blaming Gilyard. Mine was about 1 possession late in game where we needed straight up stop & led to basket.

you’ve been on the boards for how long & think we r looking for a player to blame? Lol. Here’s the list.

1a Mooney
1b Hardt

looking for someone to blame that was a good one. Hello McFly anybody home.

Blame or accountable?

Drake lost to Belmont yesterday, so our loss there immediately looks worse. Maryland is a trash team whose own fans are desperate for their coach to be fired. They will finish near the bottom of the Big 10. Utah State may turn out to be legit, but either way it was a failed opportunity for us.

Does anyone seriously expect us to beat MSU and NC State at this point? Really?? I'd give us maybe a 3% chance of that, and that's being generous.

The future is bright.

Hey, Torvik still gives us a 27.5% chance of pulling it off. But yes, that seems generous.

Agree. Gilly not the issue. What about Grant standing in the lane watching layup so as not to foul. Or blowbys by Grace. Or Cayo letting his man drive baseline to score. Or tipins allowed repeatedly. Or no blocking out. Or olay defense on the wings. OK, you get the picture. 80 points is enough to win. Problem is on the defensive end with everybody.

If you watch Gilly long enough, you will notice he comes up small a lot in big games. He's got the SDJ syndrome. Perhaps, if we didn't have to play 40 minutes every single game or if he was ever pulled once, things might be different, but Mooney treats him like Kevin Anderson, except he isn't. He had a series of bad defensive plays yesterday, but he knows he is never going to get pulled, so he can continue to try and hot dog for steals and their is never a consequence.

Yep. Wilson is the only guy I see out there balling on both ends. He's got some dog in him. When is the last time you have seen Gilly or Grant diving for a ball? These guys our seniors, they set the tone. Unfortunately, like all of our players, Mooney's fluidity-flow bullshit bleeds any dog out of them by the time they are upper classman.

The things you described on defense drive me up a tree. Our interior defense is incognito for the most part. These things are nothing new - game to game & season to season. We could be so much better if we guarded & boxed out inside the paint. This is just fundamental basketball. What the hell is Mooney looking at and neverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr correcting.

At one point last night I thought I saw a Walmart big rig coming down the middle of the court with plenty of room to operate as we move aside.

The irony is that we are intentionally soft on the offensive boards so that we can get back and set up on defense. And how is that working out? We are already giving up tons of points, how many more could we give up if we actually fought hard for every board on offense?

what now? 15 game win streak?

Turgeon gone mid-season. Apparently beating us wasn't enough to save him.

I'm sure there is more to this story but the fact that we couldn't beat this team on a neutral court obviously the buzzards circling around their head coach is all the more frustrating. Instead of looking at the longetivity of the season, Mooney and company need to be laser focused on every opportunity right in front of them. They burnt through most of their opportunities to position themselves for an at large in November and now that means each game from here on out takes on a much more urgent focus.

I hope our players are ready.

Goodman says it was mostly Turgeon's decision. He'd been worn down and there was going to be a change coming anyway, so he just decided to get out now.

wonder how that works financially, if Turgeon wanted out. I assume they still pay him something but less than what the buyout would be if fired? or do you pay him nothing?

He went to the tourney five times in the past seven years and won the Big Ten LAST YEAR and their fans couldn't get rid of him fast enough. Think how they would feel with our coach...

Says they owed him $17M but if there was a buyout before next spring, it was "only" $5M.

So yeah, $5 million buyout if fired before May 1, 2022. Possible it was negotiated downward as part of the mutual parting, but who knows.

yeah that's my question. the $5M buyout is if fired. but if you call a meeting and say you want out ... I assume that buyout goes away. unless he didn't really want out and he really was fired.

This man had more success in a 3 year span than Moon has been able to pull together in 17 years and counting and they sent him packing.

so a buyout of 30% remaining on his deal. Strange a couple posters have repeatedly said these don’t exist.

And SF is right Maryland has been in disarray from the beginning. It was a bad loss. How our most experienced team in the country can’t beat a team like that on the brink who knows.

Yeah, it's very likely somewhere in the middle.

I was at their game at home against VA Tech. During the introductions, when Turgeon was introduced the boo
birds were out. The way the team played, they looked like they should be booed too.
I think he was just tired of it all, and ready to go. And, I believe Maryland thinks a change may be good.

so how this works is pretty easy and the same with big execs in corporate america. If its really the coaches choice, he walks in and says "hey gang i was thinking maybe we should work something out were i leave" . He isn't quitting, just having some discussion. Butt school now has little choice; can't keep a guy who has said he wants out but firing him will leave you on the hook for full contract obligations. So they work something out. Some situations are truly the coach and some are firings and some are in the middle, but pretty safe bet that the coach is getting a good bit more than a check for working up to the day of departure.
