Saw a few ideas posted in other threads, so thought it might be a good idea to collect in one thread. It was mentioned that at some of the women's game - they are using old t-shirts (some from the 90-' and early 2000's) to shoot out and give to fans. To me - that just looks bad, as it looks like you just found some old shirts laying around and decided to get rid of them. Others have mentioned they are vintage - and up came some ideas for games. Here are some thoughts shared.

1) Retro Game - have Spiders wear a jersey made from a certain era of Spider basketball, and whole theme of the game should be around that era. So if they are wearing a jersey from the 88 NCAA team, then have fans wear 80's clothes, play 80's music, and have 80's contests throughout the game. You can even auction off the jerseys to raise money for charity afterwards.

2) White Out/Red Out Games - supply every person with the shirt of this color upon entry and have a color night. Almost every major college does this for 1 game a year - yet, we have difficulty pulling it off.

Progressive prize/contest. I would maybe start $500 and it increases maybe $200 each game afterwards. Could be just for students (to get them to attend) or whole crowd. But basically - have them complete a shooting contest. Like make a layup, free throw, and 3 pointer in 30 seconds. Do this - and win the prize. If the person doesn't do it - next home game - the prize increases. Might be good for students to entice them to games - give them cash in hand IF they win.

Baby Race - this is a fan favorite and should continue.

Fraternity/Soriority night - have contests geared towards the fraternities/soriorites. See if this can get them coming to games - or at least 1 game a year for this event.

Any other ideas out there?

UR’s prizes are kind of cheap so I second your point #3. I remember when I was a student, I was picked for a contest to putt a golf ball the length of the court, which is 94 feet. The prize for making this incredible putt? A $50 or $100 Amtrak gift card lol

Yeah - the prizes have to be big if the contest, like that one is big.

Quick google search of the same exact contest you took part it - I see a car was won by a student at Auburn, Indiana State gave out 10K, Baylor did 5K - so yeah, not even a $500 amtrak card would be enough.

I missed the putt but was kind of close, so I think the consolation prize should’ve been an Amtrak gift card!

I find this totally hilarious. Did someone on the board get one of these shirts at a game? If so, can you post a picture?

I didn't get a picture, but attended a game in December. They threw shirts out and a little girl a few rows in front got one. She was so excited - opened it up and I believe it had the years 98-99 on it across the front. I just shook head when I saw it, don't think the girl cared too much as she was so young - but I looked at my friend and was like - did they find an old box of shirts in a back closet of the Robins Center basement and decided to give them out today?

OMG. We have a Top 25 women's team and we are throwing out t-shirts from some left over box in the Robins Center basement to our new fans who were are trying to get invested/excited about our program. Please be better than this.

What did you expect from UR Marketing team? I would not be surprised if they get a shipment of shirts with a misspelling, and instead of sending it back or destroying them - they look at each other and go - this would be a good shirt to throw out to fans at the next home game. But the shirt says UR Spidrs. Its missing an E. Ahhh - whatever, they know what it means. We don't want to waste $500 on more t-shirts.

Can confirm, although the one my wife caught had 2016-17 on it.

How about the first game in March they call it "Spring Cleaning Game"? Hell, auction off some of Ken Hart's old things from the old equipment room.

I don't think I'm the contrarian on this but glad to be if I am. See other thread for my thoughts when Trap brought this up.

I think if they have a surplus of vintage T shirts we should take more advantage. Announce they'll be part of the cannon shots. Sell them on the website idk. I'd buy it. Guarantee these T shirts r 10 times better than what they sell on URSpidershop. The in house gear is always better. & if u gave me the choice of a mens 1988 shirt or one from 2025, I'm taking the 1988 every damn time. I have an old Spiders Club shirt it's my fav & lucky shirt. wish I had more from time in school.

I get the young girl who received might not be the happiest idk. But let her parents explain.

idk if this is really marketing per se but do a 50/50 raffle and the school's 50% can go to NIL. Everyone does a 50/50 now, raising $ for youth orgs or in the pros for charity. May not be a lot but its something, and ppl like to buy because they have chance at winning $.

I'd be interested in a 50/50 raffle where the fans stand to win half and the other half goes towards Mooney's buyout.

Collectors item. Convo starter. I'd take the mispelled shirt too. It's kinda like the old Billy Ripken baseball card that got into circulation. Annap probably knows what I'm talking about.

Gkiller - I agree with you if the intent was to market it as "vintage" or "collectible", etc. But they just quietly throw out old shirts to un-expecting little kids. They are clearly trying to save a penny by doing this and just shows how low UR goes when it comes to things like this.

lmao. was the hole regulation size? U could do a full court not halfcourt basketball heave and have better odds to make.
Yep, a golf regulation size hole was cut in the middle of a board that was maybe 5 foot wide on the opposite end of the court. The odds were incredibly low to make it. I would’ve definitely preferred a half court shot.

Heres a video I found online that was what I did. In this case it was an Auburn student and the prize was… a car

Gotcha, thanks. That's easier than hitting into a golf hole in ground. For some reason I was visualizing regular golf cup/hole, tho not sure how they'd configure that in a basketball arena anyway. Because speed is not an issue with yours or that Auburn video. If u were putting into a hole in ground with the speed of the court it would be a near impossible shot adding in speed and having ball not bounce out or go right over hole.

But still a hard shot

This could def be done by UR. Get a local car dealership - one that is connected with UR and is a sponsor to provide the car. They get insurance on these type of events and it is usually pretty inexpensive to get because the odds of winning are pretty low. But - it can draw a crowd, gets the students to come as they might want a chance to win, etc. And its exciting to watch.

Instead - UR will give you a $50 amtrak card, which will get you from Richmond to Ashland.

Another good one that used to be a staple of Midnight Madness events, but since those don't really exist - maybe you move it to one game a year where this will happen.

Pick 1 kid from the student section - and let them hit a half court shot. If they make it - they get 1 semester free tuition.

Some have stated that they no longer read the Morning Jolt, so for their benefit I'll give a highlight of today's edition. We are encouraged to watch the WBB game against Loyola tonight, and later encouraged to watch Thursday night. The game is on Thursday.
