Malcolm Bernard *sad trombone*

yeah, I agree. this is damaging to the program. and we're going to NEED a grad transfer next year. this delay could seriously hurt our ability to land one.

Both the basketball guys have graduated. I also feel confident that the football guys have also graduated. Rocco and Mooney need the support of KG badly.

This is ridiculous. In addition to the negative publicity denying one or both would create, you have to wonder the negative impact on Mooney and the staff to go this route next year. I can understand if there are some serious red flags we don't know about, but even if these guys are C students, we should be trusting Mooney and letting them come for a year.

The academic standard for acceptance to our graduate programs is significantly lower than the standard for acceptance to our undergraduate school. As long as we aren't sticking these guys in the law school we should be able to accept anyone who has graduated from a D1 school.

The adage that where there's smoke there's fire isn't always true. Sometimes where there's smoke it's a dude huffing a Pall Mall on the corner waiting for the bus to arrive.

UR has never had a grad transfer before, I am sure there are a variety of processes, paperwork, and other hurdles to surmount before you can officially admit the player. As there has been no meaningful "official" announcement on either and at least one of the two doesn't seem to project as an academic risk, logic suggests that there's some administrative issue with both. It's entirely possible it has nothing to do with UR, it could be receiving paperwork from their former schools, getting clearance from the NCAA, or another outside influence.

Further, they are different kinds of transfers technically. Malcolm is a grad transfer waiver, Kwesi is a grad exception (I believe it's his first transfer). Those both present slightly different obligations on the part of the student athlete and the school to which they want to transfer to (http://www.athleticscholarships.net/ncaa-transfer-exceptions.htm).

Hopefully things are moving slowly but surely towards resolution.

Do we know what paperwork the admission office requires for graduate programs? Could it be they ask for something that isn't routinely sent and have to wait for a second round of reports from the prior school?

Just trying to find any reasonable explanation...

That is what I was attempting to say, just less eloquently.

What activities are "in process" athletic transfers allowed to participate in?

other schools don't seem to have this much trouble. these kids announced a pretty long time ago. transcripts and documentation don't come by pony express anymore. figure it out.

As I said on a different topic on the A-10 board a while back...
Of course we use the pony express. What? Do you really expect us to trust this newfangled contraption, the Iron Horse?

It's pretty obvious to any idiot that Abakah is an incredibly intelligent kid who graduated from a great school. If we are finding a way to hang his transfer process up here, then I'm amazed we could or would ever accept any transfer in any sport.

I don't know anything about Bernard's academic career, but I can't believe we would have offered him if he was barely scraping by at Florida A&M – a good school in its own right (the 10th-best HBCU academically, according to US News; Norfolk State, by comparison, is 36th and VUU is 43rd).

Really don't think there is a problem with our admissions. Word is that our Northeastern transfer is already practicing and likely the papers were a bit slow coming from Florida for our other transfer. This will likely be completed soon. My main interest is whether Solly will play this year. Have a feeling that things will work out before the season starts where he will also be able to play. Think you guys are making a mountains out of mole hills. OSC

Thanks. Being that they both graduated, lets process whatever paperwork needs to be processed so these guys are eligible. Not sure what is going on but agree this is a time where the AD needs to step in and make things happen and happen quickly.

I hope you are correct but highly doubt it. This piece doesn't make the paper unless someone is really frustrated.

To me theres two problems. Whether or not we let them in is the first.

The second less obvious issue is the perception this creates. If articles are being written, we are discussing it, etc. then there is the perception out there that something is going on, whether it is or not.

This may a work out and these guys play and have nice seasons, I hope they do. But at this point somebody from the university should be out in front of this story, even if it's just to make a bland statent that things are being worked on.

I'm not sure anyone needs to say anything......the only 8 people paying any attention to this are posting on this thread.

Other schools have probably done this before, we have not. We know at least one of these guys didn't actually graduate until mid to late June. While the electric box/google machine does do a lot of good stuff these days, it doesn't necessarily make Janice in the Registrar's Office any faster distributing a transcript to Gladys in UR Admissions some days.

Again, I suspect that these guys are the culprits of an overly complicated paperwork effort more so than any nefarious attempt to deny them admission.

Right. Those 8, plus anybody still reading the RTD plus the players' respective families and support system, which presumably includes AAU and high school coaches.

Pike, you got that right! OSC

Um, it's in the media. You know who also is going to pay attention to this? Other coaches. This will be used against us for potential future transfers. Why would a future grad transfer what to commit to coming here if they aren't going to know until mid-summer if they are actually getting in here? And if we end up not admitting one or both of them, we have a bit of PR situation on our hands here.

And I hope this is just a paperwork delay, but again why would JOC be writing an article on a paperwork delay?

Agreed. It is now an issue, whether we like that or not.

I don't know if anyone from the school is able to comment on these kids or their situations, though, because I think officially with grad transfers you can't comment on them until they are actually enrolled, correct? So maybe Gill's hands are tied there, but some type of a general comment that speaks to the general process that takes place with grad transfers and paperwork could accomplish the same purpose, without directly mentioning either of these guys.

I am sure UR confirms grades and curriculum requirements before letting someone transfer. Where VDU just needs a pair X's on the dotted line.

Man! Gosh! Hope there was an alternate plan. Or know what; we go with what we got. Roll Spide! OSC

Ahem.

Well I am shocked that we could get to July thinking This guy is coming here and suddenly he's not. Serious head-scratcher.

A week ago, I saw this, thought it was strange, but didn't want to ask questions...

97 you are way off on your count. I tried to give ou guys a heads up last week. My information leads me to believe there was not an unidentified issue. After speaking with my contacts, my biggest concern was the apparent lack of support from the athletics department for both the young man and the coaching staff

I read 97's last post with a question mark for pike.

Exactly, see my previous post. This is a black eye for the University and the men's basketball program that has a much bigger reach than this message board as Pike indicated. How do we expect to get future grad transfer when we just did this with Bernard?

What is more concerning is your other statement Fan 1 about the lack of support for our coaching staff and Bernard? Sounds like this issue is bigger than 1 player.

Color me completely unsurprised by this.

I have no clue how this process typically works, but how on earth can it be so complicated? UR has certain requirements for incoming transfers. This kid has transcripts from his previous stops. You get them, you review them to see whether he took and passed the requisite courses and then you admit him or don't. What is the problem? Why does it take 3 months to determine this??
