M&W Tennis

The Spider men battled hard for the doubles point against VCU but came up just short. VCU wins at #1, 6–2, while the Spiders win at #3, 6–4. It came down to #2 and VCU got the 6–5 win there.

Daunting task for the Spiders in singles, but we'll see what they can do!

Spiders got the point winning 7-6! Still, daunting task in singles but hopefully this energizes us.

Great to capture the doubles point, just need to split singles....although early on VCU is up a break on 4 of the 6 singles. A lot of tennis to be played and we wont have a good idea until the 2nd set how things will go.

Holding strong through the first sets. Keep an eye on 2, 4 and 5 singles. One of those will likely be the determining outcome of who wins this.

If match ended right now would be 4-2 Spiders with #1 singles not finishing. Still a lot of tennis left to be played but looking good so far!

Alright all the first sets are done with Spiders splitting the 6 singles matches 3-3. That would give us the win 4-3, which is why the doubles point is so important to capture. Lets hope these results hold. I think we may be able to force a 3rd set tiebreaker at 1 singles if it comes to that.

4 Singles IMO is what it will come down to between Rathmanner and Almasi. Whoever wins that, their team will win.

Big break point by Rathmanner to keep on serve. Unfotunately VCU got back on serve at 3 singles though. We need to win both to win the match.

Oh dang, I didn’t think 6–5 was enough to get that doubles point for VCU, but the live scoring showed them winning it. Good battling by the Spiders!

Live scoring has been rough...both matches on serve....looks like were in for a fun ending....

Unfotunately Rathmanner had 3 unforced errors and put VCU ahead a break. Need to win this service game to keep it up. VCU has pulled ahead, only slightly.

Unfortunately Rams pull out the W. Hell of a effort by the Spiders who lost 7-0 against them earlier. Really wish our athletic derpartment would fully fund our scholarships in this sport, otherwise it makes it nearly impossible to win the A10 despite our overperformance. The fact this program performs the way it does with only 1 scholarship while the entire A10 has 4.5 is a testament to both Barrick and Ben Johnson before him.

And the administration will say “look how well they’re doing without the scholarships, so they don’t need anything more.”

The Spider women sweep UMass 4–0 to advance to tomorrow's final! The Spiders needed all three to get the doubles point, as the Spiders rolled 6–0 at #3 but UMass won 6–4 at #1 just ahead of UR taking the point with a 6-4 win at #2.

On the singles side, Campodonico cruised 6–1, 6–3 at #2 with De Lu right behind at 6–0, 7–5 at #4, and Lee closed it out with a 6–2, 6–3 victory at #6. The Spiders had taken the first sets in the other three matches as well.

Will the Spiders have to face top-seed Fordham or 5-seed VCU? Fordham currently leads 2–1, but VCU is on the verge of picking up another point. The remaining three matches could go either way.

Edit: VCU now up 3–2, so Fordham needs both of the remaining points. Tied 4–4 in the third at #3 and Fordham up 2–1 in the third at #4.

TOUGH battle for the doubles point, but the Spiders come up just short.

VCU cruised 6–1 at #3, but both #1 and #2 went to tiebreakers. The Spiders prevailed at #1 by 7–2 in the tiebreak, while VCU captured the doubles point by winning the tiebreak 7–5 at #2.

Things not looking at all good for the Spiders...VCU has taken the first set in four of the singles matches and is leading 6–5 in the other two.

Interesting how much variability there can be with teams when they play each other. We lost to UMass 4-3 then swept them 4-0. Beat VCU 4-2 in regular season and now looking to get swept 4-0.

VCU gets its second point at #3 singles with Ibrahim taking down Bakhaya 6–4, 6–1.

VCU's Alba leads Lee 4–1 in the second set at #6, so that should be VCU's third point shortly barring a big UR comeback to extend it.

VCU wins 4-1. Could’ve gotten interesting had we won the double point with court 1 and court 4 playing a 3rd set but otherwise a convincing win from VCU.

They also won with essentially all freshmen and sophomores. I get that it’s hard for our men’s team to compete because of only have 1 scholarship, but I believe the women’s team has several more if not the full allotted amount. We need to step up recruiting if we ever want to have a chance to win the A10s again.
