Loyola Game Thread

The 3 players we have are just tired.
And that's the problem. We have 3 that can be counted on to score. We know that during the season those 3 aren't going to be on every game. Somebody (plural) need to step up. We can't win with 3 players and a 7 man rotation. How many years now with a 7 man rotation?

We'll have to wait until Sunday to get our 3rd OOC win, which is an improvement.

Loyola is just a better team than us. It’s a shame things ended the way it did after such a great first half. But I will say this until the cows come home. If we ever want to compete against quality teams like Loyola we need to rebound. We only have 17 rebounds this game and I’m willing to bet 1/3 of those are from Loyola’s missed free throws. We also need more depth
We need a different coach. Thats the bottom line!!!

I think someone on this site the other day said we're better with a freshman in the lineup instead of KF. I found that laughable. KF was one tough player.

Quite amazingly, they are going to keep beating that drum too.

Did we switch out of the matchup all game? If so, I missed it. We have been a consistently bad defensive team for several years now. Hard to believe CM wouldn’t teach a different defense to this team during the off season.

I am really proud of the way we played tonight for the most part. There was the best first half of richmond basketball I’ve seen in awhile. However, this game is a perfect representation as to why Mooney is only average and not a great coach.

1. Depth. Give credit to Mooney for recruiting the big 3. They are FANTASTIC. That is why Mooney is an average coach and not a terrible one. However, it was clear that they were tired. When Loyola’s best player Cluster was playing poorly, they brought in a player from the bench who played great. There were about 5 solid scoring options for them. Being a great coach means having depth of around 6 players who are reliable enough to score double digits on a given night. We only have 3.

2. Half time adjustments. Clearly they made them and we didn’t. Being able to make effective in game adjustments is what a great coach does. An average coach hopes that what they’re doing will work for 40 minutes.

3. Rebounding. I will say this 1000 times. A great coach puts an emphasis on rebounding because that’s how you score second chance points and prevent the other team from scoring second chance points. An average coach makes no effort for rebounds and hopes that a team misses shots that will land nicely for them to grab.

4. Personnel. Loyola’s coach Moser assembled a team that has a strong presence in the paint, can shoot perimeter shots if need be, drive to the basket, etc. this equips them to handle any kind of opponent and be versatile with their scoring options. Mooney recruiting lack of big men (outside of Golden) shows. A great coach recognizes the size discrepancy and adjusts the game to drive more to the basket and take more shots in the low post.

This is why Loyola is coming off a final four run and we are hoping to be .500 this year. Don’t get me wrong, Mooney isn’t a terrible coach. That is why we played well the first half and will win a decent amount of games this year. However, beating the IUPUI and St Francis of this world is not where we should strive to be. Mooney has hit his plateau of what he is capable of doing. That’s why I Hope Hardt sees through a 16-16 record where all our wins are against IUPUI, Coppin State, St Francis type teams.

Mooney needs to coach in that Ice Cube league that's 3 on 3. He can take over Nancy's team, won't ever have to worry about having more than three good players, and Nancy can come coach us.

Take that trade any day.

Lemme guess..."we played hard, stuck together...tremendous credit to Loyola. They are a fantastic team. We just need to keep improving"

If anyone is surprised by what you just saw, you haven’t been paying attention.

Loyola plays the way we say we want to play but don’t actually b/c we have a terrible coach

Mooney will say they kept it under 20. Stayed competitive. Lot of positives to carry to the next game. Mooney's boss PQ will applaud the effort.

But the freshmen should be here for 3 more years. KF was here and 12 wins, so yea I think we’re better off playing freshmen, the main thing and maybe the only thing we can accomplish this year is player development

Witnessed such a good first half but so horrific was Mooney's defense in the second. Exactly what everyone posted here, drive, easy layup, drive, easy layup, again and again. We all know UR not good man up defenders, but absolutely no team help, not that it would probably matter.

Got home and just looked up stats. Loyola was 18-20 layups. Going by the fact they made 6 3PT in first half from 11 FGM leaving 5 other FGM means at least 13 layups in 2nd half and wouldn't doubt it was all 18. Plus Loyola missed plenty of FTA and 16 point win should have been more.

And of course the 2nd half produced once again the dismal display of Mooney's teams on the boards though the 1st half wasn't that poor. Loyola 11-0 game 2nd chance points advantage while ahead 9-1 on the offensive boards. Look, I understand if the Spiders can't get 2nd chance opportunities, but you have to at least get better at the defensive end.

JACOB IS INDEED A BIG TIME TALENT! Please let's hope he gets a shot at playing in the Big Dance.

I know some others have said this but I didn't really pick up on the extent of it until tonight. Nick is an AWFUL defender. He is either too slow or too lazy or both. It looks like he exerts zero effort on that side of the ball.

Also, we seemed to be doubling the ball and sagging the weak side defender much more than normal. Loyola took advantage of this over and over tonight.

But it sure is fun to watch Gilyard play ball. Wish the overall crappy product didn't overshadow Jacob.

The other member of the big 3 ain’t much better. Not sure if that is by design or by ability
