Looking into next season - women's basketball

Saw that Chaos won the whole thing, so the ladies had a tough draw. Figured they could have a shot if they could hit from behind the arc. Ulstrom had the best skill set for the format based on the games I was able to see.

According to this transfer portal tracker, Spiders land commitment from Skylah Travis. 6’3” grad student who started career at ODU in 2020-2021 and then transferred to Mizzou and last year transferred to Louisiana in Sun Belt. Averaged 5.6 PPG and 6.6 PPG at Louisiana.

Redshirted her frosh year at ODU with a knee injury, then spent three years at Mizzou but only appeared in four games that first year, nothing in the other two. Not sure if that was more injury issues or if she was just down the bench. More of a role last year at Louisiana, appearing in 18 games and averaging 15 minutes.

Not sure if she’ll have one year or two remaining given this will be her sixth year in college, depends on how many medical hardship waivers she can get.

No idea what to make of this one. Never played at ODU. Barely played at all (4 games and no minutes basically) at Missouri. Seemed to disappear for two years after that before showing up at Louisiana last year where she was listed as a grad student. Only on Missou roster for one year. Did see a reference that she was headed to a community college but no evidence she actually played there! Numbers were OK last year at Louisiana but only played half a season or so and only 14 min a game. Given the limited time, the numbers were ok - - - but thats a level (or three) below us.

I guess she adds some size and maybe some back up minutes, but overall, I am a little disappointed in our portal work given the strong season and pre-season hype for next. Really think we need at least one wing who can take Hill/Jiminez 3 and d role and while both the portal adds seem to add some size and toughness, they don't seem to fit our system. Budnik and Camden could shoot it and handle on the perimeter etc. and both really fit our system. Plus, Budnik could really defend inside and out. I am worried about both our perimeter defense and our shooting. It appears we are really counting on Richard to step up - - - hope she is up to the task! Sweeney certainly made a huge leap from year 1 to 2 and I think we need the same from Richard.

Agree with you Philly. Would’ve expected more starter level transfers given our success the past 2 years and our hype next season. I imagine we will have a bench player or incoming freshmen get significant minutes, but would really like someone to fill Budnik’s role as much as possible. Travis and Simon both could be really solid role players and I like their size and ability to get rebounds, but we need scorers. I think we have 2 spots left.

Doing the official release probably means we are done in the portal.

We aren't going to have very much experience at guard beyond Sweeney and Ullstrom. I think Newell probs showed she can handle backup PG minutes. But going to need someone with no real experience from among Richard and the freshman to really step up. More than one really because we need full time wing minutes plus backup minutes for two wing spots too!

Roussell has certainly earned all of our respect and absolutely has mine. But he will have some work to do to equal last year and live up to the hype.

I assume that between Dewey, Manthy and the two transfers, we will be able to find a way to get it done at the 4 and the back up big spots. Think we will look and play a bit differently there. Budnick and Camden were very skilled and comfortable on the perimeter. The transfers seem like more like power players. We may play with a more traditional post than we did last year where we really thrived spreading the floor with all 5 players who would shoot it and also go to the hoop. This is where we have to trust Rousell.

Where I AM a little concerned is the other wing opposite Ullstrom. we need a player here who can be a really good perimeter defender (Hill and Jiminez were both excellent). Ullstrom is just OK on defense and we need the other wing to be able to take the tough assignments every night. And they also need to be able to shoot it! We are going to lose some perimeter shooting with the loss of Budnick and we can't afford to step back too much on wing also. Plus, there really isn't a ton of room for Sweeney, Dugan or Ullstrom to pick up much slack as they all were already at a very high level on both efficiency and volume. The offense last year was totally built around 5 players being threats from the three and then opening up the floor and attacking the open space that created. The freshman group is loaded with guards/wings and as I have said a few times, Richard may be ready to take the big step! But given we need to find about 50-60 high level minutes, I'd sure feel better if we had someone with some track record.

That's no concern about Roussell. He obviously knows all this and seems pretty content. And as I have also said a few times alraedy, this time last year absolutely no one was thinking we were going to get what we got from Sweeney. We had lost Townsend to UNC in the portal but signed Alston and were hoping she could hold the fort! So its not that I am not confident - - its just surprising we didn't get a wing 3 and D type in the portal. We did last year and we already had both Ullstrom and Hill!

Roussell had the best season ever for Richmond WBB last year, by a long shot. Asking him to equal it to live up to the hype seems like an awfully high standard. That said, I think he has shown himself capable, we have an all American returning, but if we win make the tournament as a higher seed and lose in the first round, I wouldn't view that as him not living up to the hype.
