Looking into next season - women's basketball

Three spots available, correct? We have six that are out of eligibility plus Swider in the portal, and we signed four in the fall.

After you corrected my error regarding Manthy (thanks again), I agree there are three open spots at the moment. One other thing to note is that unlike the men's team, I don't believe there are any walk-ons on the women's side. So Roussell does not have the complication Mooney faces with how to treat walk-ons.

There are a couple of good articles in The Athletic this morning regarding WBB.

In the too-early WBB rankings we are projected at #22:

There's also an article on what the House settlement may mean for WBB with very little consensus on the issue:

So its going to be very tough to replace Budnick and Hill (and Jiminez whose impact on the wing was very underated) in exact roles they had. Both (all 3) perfect three and D players with length that really fit the system at both ends. Budnick A-10 defensive player of the year and excellent shooter is a premium combo. This combo is going to go P5 out of the portal all day long. She also freed Dugan to take easier big matchups all the time. Going to be very difficult to replace with similar skills at that same level. Hill had good length at guard which Rousell cited as such a big thing for us. Should be a bit easier to replace as she is a bit more conventional 3 and d wing. Wonder if Richard might be ready to help. Didn't see much of her, but same can be said about Sweeney her frosh year and she was clearly ready soph year!

The fit in our offense where we moved so so much and the ball went through all 5 and all 5 could shoot the three makes for a very narrow window to try and replicate. I'd think we will see some different types of players brought on and the system adjusted some. Likely, a more traditional post who can really defend and rebound, but probably not the shooter Addie was/is and some adjustments to the offense to accommodate that. And maybe another more dynamic wing who might be better at offensive end than Katie but not as good defensively and then, likewise, a few adjustments to D side system to accommodate.

What a wonderful article and one of the more promising ones about UR sports that I have read in awhile. Here's a summary of what the article discussed.
  • Doogan never considered leaving. Testament to the culture, and relationships built at UR. UR degree offering more in long run than temporary NIL. Doogan getting national recognition for next year.
  • Roussell highlights the University helping with resources saying "I think the university has been great with resourcing us with a way to keep some very popular kids. And you can imagine they were on the radar for a lot of folks." I imagine that is code for we are ponying up the money to keep our most talented players, which is wonderful to see.
  • You can tell there is a sense of pride in the program stemming from the players to coaches. The idea of building something special with recent success and praise regarding polls for next year. There is gratification in that recognition and a desire to continue to see things through in terms of what more can be accomplished. Another quote from Roussell, "And I think there's just a lot of pride, with (players), with me, with what we've created. Not just us, but with the staff, with the teammates that they've had. They really have ownership and pride that we've really built this... there's more meat on the bone for what this place can do and I think we all have a real desire to see that through."
  • Roussell went to the women's final four. The name of our WBB program has never been hotter or talked about more. Observers can see the potential of this program in the future.
  • Comment made about a "bump" in UR recruiting. Hope that means some good portal additions are coming to UR.

Good stuff, thanks for posting 17. Have watched more womens hoops this year than ever before, and I'll be glued to the ladies games next season. Exciting team and coach to follow.
For locals the womens season tickets were cheap, well worth the money. They also had a voucher program, that allowed you to choose your home games, very reasonably priced.

They keep talking about our WBB team as an excellent Mid-major. With what we have to offer in
the way of facilities, why couldn’t we win a national championship?
Roussell speaks as if he expects ourWBB program to continue to build. Great to see. This is the first year on this site where it is clear that interest has spread to many who have cared about our WBB program.

Past due for sure. We’ve had good WBB programs in the past, before Schaffer (sp?). Wasn’t there a coach
Boyle that left for a bigger program, but had ours going well?

Thanks, SF, for posting about Coach Boyle's daughter.

Fun fact about those Boyle years Richmond teams (for those who have not followed closely) is Lindsay Gottlieb, current USC Women's head coach, was an assistant here. Followed Boyle to Cal then took over as Cal head coach and has done pretty well for herself.

And Gottlieb was hired by John Beilein as an assistant for the Cleveland Cavaliers when he took that job. She stayed longer than he did before she went to USC.

Ah, 20 years ago. When Richmond was a great job for up-and-coming coaches and it was actually fun to follow them as they went on to other places.

Anyway, who you guys got money on for the Coaches Cookoff this year?

(But seriously, pumped that Roussell is sticking around and building something!)
