La Salle Game Thread

Nice job by JOC with the crowd question. Can we please stop posting these interviews with the players after losses?

Probably should also skip the Player of the game "honor" after a loss also.

I would have to think the players are declining said award, since today's POTG was 1-6 from FG/3PT and fouled out of the game. OR maybe that just shows what a travesty the post game radio report actually is.

Paraphrasing but said that the team tightened up at the end of games b/c of the lack of fan support at home.

Knowing he’s going to read this - that was the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Glad he’s #1 #realfan.

Team is a reflection of its coach, they folded at the end, got outplayed, out hustled, out rebounded, out coached, out everythinged.

And Sal never even bothered to take off his warmup tonight.
The team does not have a bench. This is the second game in a row where one bench player logged 5 points. Bench players were not given enough in-game minutes in OOC and it hurts now. It comes down to basically three players having to shoulder the load. How can this happen with a long tenured coach? It is difficult to understand. Sal should be getting spot minutes and he can at least bring effort off the bench. Aggression and urgency off the bench is needed for a good team and Coach Mooney has not brought in anyone that will mix it up with aggression. Instead of aggression it is timidity and confusion.

Mooney is now routinely being outcoached and losing to first- and second-year head coaches at recently or currently terrible programs.

30 minutes from the bench, 24 of it from Noah. So basically playing six guys.

Your main guys are going to be too tired to close out games using that strategy.

A lot of us true fans have been loyal to this program longer than you have been alive Matt Smith. Shame on you for blaming us.

Fan comment or not, you are a poor excuse for a broadcaster, even in a backup role. I sure hope you are reading this.

Now, back to my vacation....

Not if you rotate correctly. Only 2 guys played more than Grant's 34 minutes. With media timeouts, 34 minutes should not be too much time and should not tire anyone out. Grace gave Grant 6 minutes of rest, so that leaves 160 minutes for the other 4 starters and Noah. That is easily doable with plenty of rest for everyone. Instead of going 40, 39, 33, 24, and 24, just give a few extra minutes of rest to Jacob and Nate, making it 34, 34, 33, 32, and 27.

I agree it would nice to have more than 6 guys getting a lot of minutes, but it can be done without tiring guys out. Even some of the big time teams only play 6 or 7 guys, but I definitely disagree with playing our guys 40 and 39 minutes consistently. All of them should get a few minutes rest each half.

On the radio afterwards, Mooney mentioned how Grant and Jacob and Nate were probably tired from playing so many minutes all the time, and that that probably impacted the outcome. Unreal. Mooney creates the problem, then uses the problem as an excuse. We're not idiots, coach.

Did not hear that, but my goodness, just give them a few minutes of rest a half, and that won't be an issue. I agree it is pretty silly to mention that as a coach when it is something you can control as a coach.

That struck me also.

I wish espn950 would put the postgame shows up in the audio vault. Theatre of the absurd.

This should bode well for the last several games of the year & "the big run in the tournament". Who needs rest & fresh legs ?

6644 attendance tonight. 92%. Guess Matt is admitting those numbers are fake?

Fans are sick of spending hard earned money on this garbage..hence why they have to give tickets away every night.

Shut the hell up Matt.
They announced the number of elementary/middle schools present, as well as there were a number of people at the top of sections not normally season ticket holders or regular attendees, my guess is they were give away tickets.

Why the heck didn't he play Sal?! Would have helped with the resting players issue and probably on the boards too. Just don't get it.

Forgive the ignorance but was Matt Smith filling in for Beckwith on radio broadcast? Does he do that often?

I agree shove the sanctimonious attitude.

VT4700 has been saying for days that Sal was not ready to play and couldn't help the team. He sure seems to know what CM is thinking, a lot more than the rest of us here do.

Bob and Beck do the TV broadcast often at home with Fish and smith on the radio.

Uh. No. I said "maybe" he is not ready. Sorry, some of you think I know things, but we all know the same here.

I'm going on record now as a fan of Robert Fish. Give him a better sidekick than Yes Man Wonder Boy...and no, I wasn't thinking of Colonel Access Craver

I don’t think Sal is ready to be a big contributor, but I think everyone here (including VT) would agree it would be beneficial for him to get 5-10 minutes a game

I can agree with that as long as the effort is there in practice.

Is there not some student interested in broadcast journalism that we could get some experience calling spider games, working on the football sidelines and helping Robert Fish in hoops? Why does Matt Smith find a way to control discussion by pissing off stakeholders year after year?
Maybe the kid who Mooney used to mock JOC?

Credit where it's due....Mooney answered the question and said the crowd support was "tremendous." I wonder if JOC had heard about Matt Smith's statement before asking the question.

Hardt doesn't need to wait until a program-wide housecleaning to replace a 4th-string broadcaster.

I have been following this message board for years and have had Spider Season Tix for 33yrs. I finally felt compelled to join in on the conversation for a multitude of reasons but specifically in this instance to defend Matt Smith .

Of the 4 ppl who broadcast the game he is the only who is truly critical of the play on the court and the coaching. For instance he called out Mooney post game for complaining to the refs. He called out the shot selection and plays they ran at the end of the game like the Golden 3, y'all have all expressed dismay over.

About the home crowd he said Richmond hasn't been good at home and one of the reasons is a lack of a strong atmosphere. (Which has been a hallmark of UofR games for many years, we are no the most racous crowd) BUT most importantly he said the play on the court has NOT warranted fan supoort. How could you leave that part out when complaining about what he said?

I love Becky as a former player but if u want to hear critical anaylsis of Mooney, Matt Smith is the only one I've heard give it during a game.

A lack of atmosphere has nothing to do with losing it home. I don't think all these other a - 10 atmospheres rival the best in the nation, so it is not like we are at some kind of disadvantage in our conference because of our atmosphere. We are 2 -7 in the conference and have lost six straight at home because of our play on the court, not because of our fans off the court.

The speculation about lack of crowd support is a smokescreen. The crowds are smaller for one reason - the poor quality of the on-court product in the recent past, and particularly the past two seasons. Blaming the crowd (or lack thereof) for our recent poor performance is a lame-a$$ cop-out.

These excuses are making me physically ill. (Insert barfing emoji here)

Sack Mooney and bring in a new coach, and I can guarantee that the on-court product and performance will improve, and the crowd size and support will follow.

Yes, he is critical of the play on the court and the coaching in broadcast. Then he turns around on social media and rips those who do the same thing as not being #realfans.

His delineation seems to be:
  • #realfans = go to the games for free, or even get paid to attend the games
  • not #realfans = those that pay to attend games and support their team.

I have never heard Smith address real fans vs fake fans but I don't follow him on social media. We all know home team broadcast's specialize in homerism, and he comes the closest to out right blaming Mooney for our issues. We (here) all agree replacing Mooney is the obvi answer to our issues. Preaching to the choir there.

Losses like this and a lack of crowd support are a net positive in my opinion, if you want Mooney gone. Sweeping VCU last year, as enjoyable as that was, probably set our program back bc it gave CM another year.
