La Salle Explorers - 2:30 PM Saturday

I don't want to hear about the refs, the layoff, etc. We played exactly like who we are and have been all year (and for all but one of 7 years). Horrible on defense, struggled against a zone, virtually zero contribution from the bench (and virtually no opportunity given to contribute), completely soft at every aspect of the game where grit/toughness matters (except maybe for Francis) and we got outcoached by a wide margin.

The coach cares only about one thing really and that's how well a guy can learn and run his complex offense. As a result, we are a very good offensive team against man-to-man (but only in years when we are really experienced). But he doesn't care about anything else seemingly and we are below average or worse (much worse in some cases) at virtually every other aspect of the game. He certainly doesn't have accountability for anything else. How many times can guys drive past us before you try somebody/something different - - apparently there is no number of bad defensive plays that will get you pulled or cause us to switch something up defensively because he needs you to run his almighty offense (which is really only good against man). On the other hand, a non-top 5 player makes one mistake on offense and is pulled (happened to Gus, Wilson and Sal today). Sal probably plays harder than anyone on our team - - - how many minutes did he get in 2nd half? Because he's not smooth" in the almighty Mooney offense and its fine for your team to get out worked, out hustled, out physicaled as long as the offense runs pretty. I won't call out any players specifically because I truly believe they have simply taken on the attributes of their coach (the flip side of having a bunch of experienced guys out there I guess), but do we even seem to get mad about our defense ever? Just take a hard foul somewhere to discourage the other team from thinking its an 8 lane highway with a 75 mile an hour speed limit when going to the basket? The most we seem to muster is pouting and whining about calls.

There was not a single thing that happened today that I would consider out of character for this team. The other team simply knew who we are and took advantage (e.g. played zone, posted up our guards, owned every 50/50 ball etc.) and CLEARLY motivated their kids to play markedly harder for all 40 minutes than ours did. Everything that happened today is what's happened earlier this year and consistently over a large number of years. The coach gets what he emphasizes - - - good skill players who understand and execute good offense and really offer little else. Really all that happened today is what happens to us far too often - - the other team knew if they could just keep us to being only a slightly above average offensive team, they could win because they KNEW they would be better than us in everything else.

This may very well be the best class we've ever had, but without the coach to really maximize that!

Once again, the only way UR is getting into the NCAA tournament is to win the A-10 tournament, which may or may not even happen.

An opponent with no player averaging double digits in scoring and 6 players hit double digits today. I wonder how that can happen.

Sure this game came after a pause, but this same type of game has been seen before this season.

CM did prepare for this game. The performance in the game was foretold in the pre-game press conference. The players had to stay in hotel rooms “doing nothing”during the pause. It was impossible to be ready to play.

Despite the odds, the team managed to go 24 for 24 from the charity stripe. Truly amazing.

yep this is what the Mooney apologists will say. And so wrong. 1 it’s lasalle. 2. We got benefit of playing teams like Bona & it didn’t hurt them 3. we were told numerous times that lack of prep was actually an advantage this season for our super vet best class ever team.

Toughness just isn't there. The whining and complaining by these Spider players looks bad. It is the same 3, game-after-game.

Been leaning toward connecting the whining and the lack of toughness. Becoming more convinced.

Right on. This is pretty much the scouting report on us. Perform it properly, and the opponent will be rewarded. Sad and predictable year after year after year.

10 years wasted!!!

No NCAA. Pathetic.

This is my thing, a school that views itself as a relevant mid major basketball program can not have a drought of this length. Just can't. There are countless "lesser" programs that have made the Big Dance in that time. Even in our own conference these teams have made it there more recently than we have:

Davidson
Dayton
SBU
SLU
URI
LaSalle
St Joe's
GW
VCU
UMASS
George Mason (their drought is tied with ours)

wow...just wow

Agreement 100%! Same 3 for sure. Been going on it seems like with GG forever but now Jacob and Blake can never do any wrong. As much as refs want to be fair, human nature suggests they don't/won't forget this crap and refs TALK and STICK together. As much as Mooney has run a class program at UR he hasn't gotten into these guys heads that stuff doesn't help.

PS The coach (Mooney) should be working the refs for the NEXT call not the one that past but we all know that is not his strong suit!

How can anybody continue to support Mooney. I really don’t get it?. Millions of dollars and mediocre is our zenith

Nearly irrelevant, but did I hear correctly that between 9:28 left in first half and 7:24 left in the game we were 0 for 10 from three?

Don't know times but announcers did say 0-10. I follow live stats and Spiders started 4-6 and it went to 6-22 at one point so 2-16 says yes to a 0-10 period.

It's games like this that just kill us every year. We have already had 2 terrible losses this year. Last year was Radford. In years past it has been Longwood, Oral Robert's, Delaware, ect. The list goes on and on. Just really hard to be in the NCAA tournament when you consistently lose games like these and CM teams do lose these games every year. I think it all goes back to CM just not being a very good in game coach. His supports will argue this, but its the same thing year after year. It's not even arguable anymore.

another ho hum postgame presser from Mooney. Looking fwd to St Joe’s. Lasalle played w energy. No urgency from Mooney. Of course it’s not like he got anything outside of a softball question. Even young Noah boycotted.

Anecdotally I can’t tell u how many ppl I’ve heard from on text that r just fed up & don’t even want to follow us rest of year. Maybe during A-10 tourney if there is 1.

sucks it’s only Jan & that’s the feelings out there. I’m a lifer we r all lifers - well most of us - but I get it. We r underperforming more than ever b4.

I didn't even bother with the post-game. Basically covid excuses and we need to focus on practice. We are talking about practice.

Don’t forget needing to give the nonexistent bench more playing time.

34-2 in bench points today. Don’t think that’s good. Our bench isn’t strong but Goose is. 10 mins for him is criminal. He was one of the few who played D. JOC reporter no restrictions for Goose. His minutes have been mismanaged all year.

I don’t know how our bench helps us much in this game tbh. Short of giving the starters breathers and fouling the sh*% out of Lasalle while they’re in to force them to earn it at the line.

How many times has Golden been in foul trouble this year...once? He could take some of those actually. Look we want him on the court but if we need to be tougher u gotta make your inside presence known sometimes & make them earn it & give other team something to think about. It would be 1 thing if he’s in foul trouble but he’s not. Just an idea.

In a roundabout way, that was my point. We let opponents score way too easily.

Basically the sky is falling. Run from the hills. Don't worry St.Joseph's won't be an issue. Covid is the reason for the poor play.

Understatement to follow: This loss to a team whose height of glory was in 1954 when they won the NCAA Championship is a blemish on our increasingly dismal record. After all the hype before the season and the early season number 19 ranking makes it all the tougher to take. Ugly game.

Fezz, have to agree. This team needs to lose the entitlement and self pity NOW, if they want to get back on track and win the A10 tourney. I'm done with Mooney, but would like to Cayo and Francis and the guys play in an NCAA. Mooney was met with some hurdles this year, and appears to be using as an excuse, which he cannot do as an apparent leader.

is there a radio show Monday? Will probably get more of the “we haven’t played well yet and r still 9-4” similar to post Hofstra & from a few on this board. Showing again the lack of urgency and self awareness.

My takeaway from the post game press conference is that I feel bad for Grant (who looked very disappointed at the press conference). He catches a lot of heat on here for defense, but thought he was okay there yesterday. Offensively, he was on fire, but our guards decided to chuck up 3’s that weren’t falling instead of feeding him.
Really seems like guard play has been our weakness this year, which sucks because Burton is having a very good year filling in for the loss of Sherod, Cayo has been solid (aside from yesterday), and Grant has played well too. Guards are allowing too many dribble drives to go right past them - which forces help and gets everyone else out of position - and also have not played well offensively in general

Grant could have scored 40 yesterday if we let him. LaSalle couldn’t stop him.

And this is the issue with CMs system. He doesn't change it to exploit our advantage over opponents. I agree, LaSalle doesn't have a single player capable of guarding GG in the post. He should have been on the block every possession. Mooney knows 1 way to play, and that's it. No adjustments.

That said, defense cost us the Hofstra game and the game yesterday. We can't stop dribble penetration.

Once again an opponent shots over 50% from 3.... do you think it’s a trend yet?
It's no secret that we basically don't guard 3 point shooters tight or in some cases not at all. There were several times yesterday on TV that there was not a Spider jersey on the screen while Lasalle 3 point shooters were launching. And that is not something that was an anomaly for just yesterday's game. This just baffles the crap out of me - WVa, Vandy, Loyola, Hofstra, St B, Lasalle. Patterns and strategy repeat - failed strategies I might add.
