The complete sh-t show that is UR athletics right now ( and I hear there are more problems than just bad teams on th field) falls on Gill. This single hire is going to go down as the single worst move ever made by UR. He has set athletics back 10 years. Hardt inherited quite a mess. He’s going to need to be very bold and have a lot of support from the admin to get this fixed.

I think we have to acknowledge than Rocco was correct about a number of things about our commitment and what it was going to take to remain elite FCS program.

Bucknell is 1-8 this season... and 4 winning seasons since 2005... not sure why people think Hardt will make a change

I’m sure Rocco recognized a lot of issues in the AD but I’m not going to build some statue for the guy. He’s a good football coach no doubt but he also has a history of getting antsy every few years...just ask Liberty. He decided not only to jump ship but head to a conference rival. I mean we have changed AD’s and made commitments to a new locker room etc recently as well as paying Huesman a salary comparable to what Rocco is getting at Delaware. Rocco will give himself a few game balls in Newark and then probably move on in a few years again. My bigger issue is Russ and his staff not being able to get our team prepared.

Those in charge of the university need to decide what direction the football program should take. Hopefully in the direction where we are one of the CAA power teams fighting for FCS national chamionships.

FRS, can you provide any proof that the university doesn’t want the football team to compete at the top of the CAA?

Kicking and Screaming. He forewarned us by telling the truth about the schools lack of commitment to fcs football. Now we have to look at DR and UD roll into the playoffs. Had the coach and let him walk out the damn door. Unbelievably stupid.....Now look at us. It's going to get worse before it gets better. I see 2 more years of this type of football. We in trouble!!!

So did Liberty, where committment to athletics and money are not the problem. The dude was leaving anyway. Get over it. He may have done us a big favor in the long run, not intended by the way, on his way out.

Right. Keep telling yourself that.

DR can’t recruit for long term. But he can coach. And he knows his skill set well. He did the same at UR as Liberty. And he’ll do the same thing at UD.

Some of the posters on here have a lot more love for Rocco than he ever had for us (UR family). The guy is a very solid/good coach but he wanted to leave us just like he wanted to leave Liberty. I’m sure there are some former Rocco players and supporters on this board who will disagree but at least to my perception he is a guy who gets happy feet after a few years at each stop. We didn’t “lose” Rocco..the guy left us for a conference rival. The fact that we are paying Huesman basically the same amount as Danny is making at Delaware just seems to reinforce that he was looking to leave. I’m sure he was frustrated with the AD but he didn’t stick around to see if any changes were coming. He’s all about himself...which is fine. People make job changes everyday to further their careers and earn more money for themselves and their families. Hope he enjoys his self bestowed game balls and I hope we figure it out with Russ or someone else soon.

I cannot produce any proof. However I believe the Cooper Effect might still hanging around.
Of course you can’t
There is some evidence; the frequent suggestions/studies that we should move to the patriot league, the hiring of a Bucknel AD, so yeah there are indications, in fact I go so far as to say it would have been deemphasized already if it wasn't for the football endowment.

My question is what is the difference in the Rocco approach and the Beilein approach in basketball? Admittedly Beilein was not as outspoken but other that not much difference in moving on mindset. Beilein is held in high esteem, why not Rocco? But all that is in the past - where are we going from here? School has shown by the great facilities that we have there is a commitment to football and basketball. Certainly did not see this huge downer of a football season coming. 3-6 with no chance for a winning season doesn't cut it......

really? John B didn't interview for jobs while the season was going on. He left in April.

Beilein negotiated a out in his contract for power 5 conference jobs and that's what happened. Rocco is still in our conference.
I did see a post from an ECU fan that he wished they'd hired Rocco when they had the chance???

Agree. My point was concerning the desire to move to another job after a fairly brief coaching tenure. That may be understandable. It is more of a hard pill to swallow when a coach changes jobs within the same conference but the net result in either case is the coach is gone.

there is big difference between actively interviewing for jobs while the season is going on vs. taking a job two months after season is over.

Grant that. My point is that the "looking to leave mindset" was present for both coaches early on. Also a fine line between being upfront about interviewing - getting formal "permission" from your own school - and everyone knowing you are looking to leave, so you may well be talking to other schools but you can keep it under wraps. It is fine with me if you hold Beilein in higher esteem than Rocco; I fail to see much difference other than Rocco being more outspoken which is part of his personality and one of the reasons I enjoyed the few conversations I had with him.

For me there are two things about Rocco's departure that bother me. His public method of burning the bridge just seemed completely unnecessary. Also he went to a conference rival. I respect him as a good coach. But those two things damaged his reputation with me. And now I consider him a rival just below the level of JMU and VCU.

the thing is, we hired both coaches from other programs, they came, why should they not leave us too? it is how things work in the coaching industry and some just don't seem to get it. we are a puny deal and anyone who comes here and does well is going to go out the door for a better opportunity or an opportunity to get closer to home, etc. let's at least be real on here.

It's not that Rocco left but how he left. London, Clawson, they left but it was to move up to a better team and conference. Rocco left to join arguably a worse team (during Rocco's tenure we were better than Delaware) and burnt all his bridges at UR in doing so. The only good thing that came out of this ordeal, was it at least expedited Gill's firing.

First of all, I never met either guy, so i don't hold either in higher esteem.

I will try again and be more clear. While we were in the middle of our 12 game football season (+ playoffs), Rocco or his handlers were discussing the Delaware opening. He was also spouting off to JOC.
It is public knowledge based on news reports (and never denied by anyone) that those occurred.

Even as his Spiders were preparing for playoff games the last two weeks, Rocco, responding to reports that he was a candidate at Delaware, said he had career options and that he wanted to be assured of the school’s vision for his program.

The above quote from the WIlmington News.

John Beilein had his son coming to player for Richmond hoops, his other son was going to play football and his daughter was going to school here. in april, after the final 4 was over, he left. Did he interview for other jobs, sure? Did he interview in the middle of the season? No.

We can "put it to bed" - that is fine. You liked the way Beilein left over the way Rocco left. All good.

spider fan - there is a reason Beilein is consistently voted as the coach with the most integrity by his peers. While one can really never be 100% sure of anyone else's actions, I'm very confident Beilien did it the right way and never interviewed in season. Yes he was looking to move up eventually, same as WV, heck he almost took the Pistons job this offseason. Re: WV that hire came late, remember they hired Dan Dakich first then he bailed on job within the week. I hate Dan Dakich. Ha. Anyway I happened to be at a UR related function the night JB got the call about WV wanting him. It came from Mike Tranghese, BE Commish at time. I saw JB a few days later after he accepted job. He was quite apologetic about it, & seemed sincere imo, since he was at UR related function and had inevitably, as you do at those things, talked about how much he loved UR etc. Anyway no reason to be apologetic he had earned it. I don't have a personal relationship with JB at all except having interacted with him on a handful of occasions and finding him to be an exceptional coach. Just sharing the anecdote.

I don't begrudge any coach for leaving (even if I don't want them to go), nature of business and no breakup is ever smooth, coaching or not. I mean London still gets crap on here, undeserved imo, about how he left. His agent was handling stuff, he didn't have to interview at UVA they knew him very well already. Now Rocco was a very good coach. He wasn't my favorite personality but sometimes u have to live with that with your coach if he's good. The whole game ball stuff I never understood, his long pauses & way of speaking. Certainly he was interviewing with UD and he tried to burn it down here so to speak so I don't respect any of that. So yes have to agree with Lurker so much different than Beilien. That said Rocco could also coach but what's done is done.

Hope all is well with you and we run into each other at hoops sometime again if I can make a home game.

Not sure why our current lack of productivity is based on the two guys that left and did not want to be with us. It is like water under a bridge. The current staff has to help the guys understand who and what we are. Odds have never been in our favor. Facilities, support, five star recruits, etc., yet we have still produced some good winning teams and talent.

My one concern with Coach H is now and when he was DC. The players just do not like him. That is the reason he did not get the job when Clawson left. Can that ship turn around, of course it can. It is up to him. I was with the thought pattern of giving Healy the job when Rooco left. It was imho if we going to rebuild let’s tear the whole house down and start from scratch. It would have been a tall order but we would have had a coach players love and would walk through fire.

This weekend will have a host of the 2008 players return, maybe they can say something to make the team understand “WE R UR”. Pride and lack there of is an issue that make or break you. Say what you may about London but players loved him and it showed.

paward - you are correct. The past is over and we have to focus going forward. Have heard Huesman speak to media too often about this is wrong, that is wrong, we are not doing this, we are not doing that - totally the opposite of inspiring the team in a "Win one for the Gipper' mode. Sure he is frustrated, but how does that kind of "talk" inspire 18-22 year olds? It is the opposite of a "pep talk."

If I played in a game with 6 TOs I would be regretting the next weeks practices. Forbid it that I would have 3 similar games with high
number of TOs. You know you want your QB loose and not scared of making a mistake. If you are scared you are going to throw an interception, then most likely you will. KJ two ints were horrible and looked like he aimed the ball when he threw. The pick six that JM through with it going to back should per Bob Black looked like wrong decision cause #14 was ahead of the DB and if he had been lead, it was a big gainer. Someone goofed either the receiver on the route or JM underthrowing. DB is not going to get many more easy intercepts like that.

The team can't play uptight or afraid. Mistakes happen when players are not loose or confident.
