JB

Everybody loves a winner.66% UR,64% WVa,64% UM.JB knows how to win with kids who can read and write and do rithmetic and who can shoot.

There are good guys in college bb and John B is one of them. He coaches at a great academic institution. He has shown that you can recruit student athletes who are articulate and can be successful in a very competitive league. His coaching philosophy has evolved over the years. He is not afraid to make adjustments in order to give his players the best chance to win. On top of that he is sought out by parents of players who want their kids in a positive family type environment.

I have them beating Duke in one of my two brackets.
The other bracket is dead.

Beilein is OBVIOUSLY a great coach first of all and seems like a great guy. I was surprised when I looked up his success at Richmond though. He had a winning record every year but only went to the NCAA tourney his first year. Would that have been with Dooley’s players? So, he didn’t even meet Bob Black’s quota of dancing at least once every four years. Bob Black gushes and goes out of his way to somehow mention Beilein every morning.

His success at UR would seem to pale in comparison to Tarrant, but Beilein seems to be who everyone bows down to.

I know you guys will tell me to get lost, but I just found that interesting. I know the year that you guys couldn’t play in the CAA tourney could have cost you a bid, but no guarantees from that.

Enjoy the rest of the tourney!

Ok genius (sarcasm here). Tarrant was the greatest. If we could have kept Beilein one more year, we would have had him four because he wasn't sure Patrick could play in a higher league. That would have been a glorious period. We got screwed one year because we were leaving the CAA. You make VCU fans like Pav and "your trash" and DB look smart, so go congratulate yourself. You even make FM look like a genius.

We both mentioned the final year in the CAA - great minds think alike?!

I certainly remember the final regular season game and the “cutting of the nets”.

His climb through every level is certainly impressive and he has found a home where he will retire as a legend!

I have him losing to Nova in the championship game this year.

I was bitter during the WVU years, but have been back on the bandwagon since. Pure class.

He literally went to two schools I despise due to my ties to MSU and VT. But I can't not root for him at Michigan (Was too tough to watch all those guys at WVU that were heading/favoring Richmond). As 23 says I often wonder what would of happened had Patrick been one year older because we would of likely had JB at least until Patrick graduated. It was so close to not happening too, Dan Dakich reneged on the WVU job after accepting it. Remember seeing Ray Tate walking across the practice fields at my HS and to break the news to me.

Yes Ferrum, If I recall correctly we thought we had dodged the bullet when JB turned down a Rutgers (or maybe St John's) offer and re-upped with UR. Then that knucklehead Dakich pulled out quickly (been watching too many Office episodes) and we were screwed.

really want so much to pull for loyola and the old nun but have to root for JB. the prob is with his teams, including ours, if cold from 3, they are average. think nova is the best team but think he has a shot if he can somehow muzzle the sister on the other bench.

I will always be a JB fan, so as long as he is at Michigan, I will be hoping he wins. I still think we could learn a lot from JB's systems (both offensive and defensive), but I guess it is just too difficult to get one's hands on video of UM and UVA games (sarcasm!). Anyway, JB will get always get my vote as the best coaching hire in UR history, and also as the "best one that ever got away."

JB does amazing things with limited talent, and that is the ultimate measure of a great coach.

In JB's 5 year tenure here, he only took us 1 NCAA, which is true. However, as you mentioned we got blocked by the CAA and were ineligible for the CAA tourney that year we finished first in the CAA. And then the next year, the program transitioned to a much higher profile league in the A-10, and we won 22 games that year and finished second in the A-10. He had a career .650 winning percentage in his 5 years. That is why he is beloved here.

he's a great coach and did well here, but his legend is growing beyond reality. people complained about his recruiting and his team's poor rebounding. some on this board were happy to move on to Wainwright, not knowing how bad that would turned out.

Somebody was happy to move along???? JB departure was hard to take especially I believe he'd just signed a new contract but the talk was it had some out clauses for him, like any job at a P5 conference, WV was in the old Big East then.

not sure i ever knew anyone who was happy to move on from JB, yes, some were bitter when in their mind he made a lateral move to wva......HA. there is no perfect coach but JB was perfect for us, loved the way he ran practice, loved that he would suspend starters if they broke rules, his honesty, his integrity.

I was a big fan too. still am. but I remember plenty of people on this board who weren't upset. they always felt he had one foot out the door anyway, courting offers. and the rebounding issues. maybe it was just bitterness, but it was here.

I was one of those that wasn't upset. Apart from a coaches record, you either like watching their teams play, or you don't. His system like others, can be an acquired taste.

I'm not sure what this board set about his departure, but I was pretty heartbroken when he left. I do remember him shopping around the last couple of years and that it was stressful never knowing if he was staying or going.

I would gladly take that now versus the utter staleness waiting for either bad news or just to be plain disappointed.

Yes, I came to the understanding that our model would be hire a really good coach, and then start holding our breath in year 3 and beyond. This is probably the best model and you unfortunately cannot hit every time so you get some down turns. That is why this loooong stretch from 2011 with Moon is just becoming unbearable. He has proven that he can't quite have us at that excellent level any more (no matter if you think it is poor recruiting, unlevel admissions playing field, stale strategy, no in game adjustments, too many yes men, etc etc) and we just keep going forward. Queally pulled the "practice facility" rabbit out of his hat and now two more years of the same.

that's just a great listen all the way through. thanks, 32.
our fans, players and coaches should all get a little something from that.

all successful coaches in the A-10 are targets and they have guys speaking with their agents, just a fact of life. we all wanted to find a young guy who did it for us and then pay him to stay. Coach B would not have departed his home to come here if he was not wanting and willing to also move up somewhere else, just a matter of time for him. still think a young successful guy is the model even if we lose him in a few years unless you just happen to luck into a DT or the guy at davidson or the guy who put charleston on the map a while back. if you are not in a power five conf, chances are you are going to lose your coach if he is really good.

Interesting part to me was JB bringing up more away games and inconsistant officiating in the non P5 conferences. We certainly had some bad refs home and away this year.

JB picked up another nice victory today, and will now be playing in the national championship game. How many of our past coaches have gone on to do this well? I doubt it is even close for 2nd place. Love that JB is doing so well, and with talent that to me does not seem to be significantly better than ours.

He does a great job adjusting his schemes (offense and defense) to the talent he has, and fully utilizing his player's strengths.

It’s just amazing that he has never been an assistant coach. It has to be a big part of his willingness to adapt and evolve. There is not a better teacher of the game.

It isamazing that Beilein could coach this group to the title game. Outside of Wagner, there's not a ton of exceptional talent on the roster. JB is the best.

Yep. And voted the cleanest coach in college basketball by other coaches. That says it all right there. When he”s done coaching, he’ll be able to look proudly on what he’s accomplished which few (if any) on his coaching level will be able to say. Glad he is part of our basketball story because he exemplifies our values and potential.

I will always have a major soft spot for JB. His first season was my senior year at UR. All those CAA tournament games that year and the win over South Carolina in the NCAA's. I had a chance to meet him a few years after I graduated before one of our early season tournaments out in Vegas. I think we were about to play a ranked Cincinnati team and coach literally just wanted to talk to my buddy and I about how we were doing and if we were having a good time in Vegas. Great coach and a really nice man.
