Jack Doumbia - 2025 Transfer Visit

Don’t we have 3-4 wing guys already? I know, I know…positionless.

While I’m sure we can use help everywhere, please Show me some SG and F types,

He is a wing who doesn't shoot the three...he's only 8-for-33 in his career. Solid shooting percentage from two though (54.7% last season), so I assume he's getting to the rim quite a bit. Gets to the line a decent amount, but only 65% from the stripe. Solid rebounder for his size.

So a program that’s predicated on shooting well from 3 is trying to get a guy who doesn’t shoot often or well from 3?

Wtf is happening. I guess I’m gonna need to start drinking more heavily.

his film looks like he could play some 2 guard, needs to work on 3 pt off season.

2 point fg pct good. Ft pct not good. Assuming his rebounding pct bolstered somewhat by offensive rebounds which would most certainly drop if he plays in Moon offensive rebounding philosophy. Just not overly sold on him as impact player????

career stats show getting better at 3, film shows he can attack basket and can sky with quick leap.

Going from 2-for-10 in each of his first two years to 4-for-13 last year is not a statistically significant sample size to be able to say anything about his percentage trend.

And his rate of taking threes is decreasing...one attempt per 23.2 minutes as a frosh, one per 31 minutes as a sophomore, and one per 59.2 minutes as a junior.

I’ll be honest, it wouldn’t really excite me if he committed here. We have a lot of guards, he didn’t exactly light it up at Wright State, and his two strengths of driving to the basket and rebounding aren’t things we do at Richmond. Maybe for a different team he can do well but I don’t really see that here. We know Mooney isn’t going to deviate from the Princeton offense. That relies on a more finesse style of play and ability to shoot the 3 ball well, and his 3 point shooting is unimpressive. We are not a physical style, get to the basket kind of team. We also do not emphasize rebounding at all, even though that’s something I and a lot of posters here are begging Richmond to focus on more. Of course if he becomes a Spider I will support him, but I just don’t see him being a good fit here.

If we have the right guards and team around him, he could play the DJI Bailey big guard role, both weren’t high volume 3 point scorers but they put consistent pressure on the rim, athletic, good defenders and just high energy players. This years team lacked athleticism and dudes that hustle and play defense. Honestly I wouldn’t mind this commitment at all.

Seems the breakdown of opinions here are evenly split maybe. That’s not an excitement factor. Of course nobody knows what we’re really getting out of transfers until they get here and see how they fit into our schemes. Last year wasn’t a particularly strong “get”. With our failures this past season and losing several players to eligibility, it’s crucial that we get some real value added in the portal. Otherwise we’re looking at a repeat of this past season.

Probably defensive glue guy. And u need that. Tho Moon will play guys over them early see dji & Tyler Harris, see D’Entremont.

Doumbia roles at other places have not been large. We’ll get a couple transfers of course but skeptical we’re in market for alphas. Duggan maybe closest but do we close that. Primarily staff wants to have 2-3 frosh show promise next season.

I’m for anyone that can help us…that said Doumbia is also card carrying example of todays game. Will be 25 years old during season. Going on 7 schools in 8 years including high school, 5 in 6 years college. And I think has the 1 more because of ncaa giving non d1-d3 guys another year. No rules.

That was role I had in mind

Well right now, we don't have the "right guards" nor team around him. We have 2 open slots for the portal at present (hoping for more) and we have absolutely no one on the roster that is an alpha or frankly other teams even have to game plan around. We have a whole team of guys who are 7th and 8th bench players, so we can't be using our 2 portal spots for more of the same. Hard pass.

And oh, he plays the same exact same position as the 2 guys we redshirted this year, so that it is not a great sign either that Mooney sees the need to supplement here.

We need an alpha guard in the portal, preferably a taller shooting guard and probably a 3/4 who can get us buckets and also shoot the 3. That way we don't have to player Tanner or AP in a starters role.

we don't seem to recruit for our system, yet don't alter the system to the players we recruit.
make it make sense.
Yep, its an odd thing. Take last year, Tied for only conference reg season A10 under Mooney, and though we did have shooters - I think it was more predicated on having tough, athletic, defensive minded players. So totally scrapped that notion in portal, going for "best shooting team ever", and landed near the bottom with preferred Mooney type players. Indeed, make it make sense! I think the underlying theme is that Mooney has no clue how to "compete" in this environment. And all the messaging says "let's give it a couple more years to figure it out" Sensible.

we were the worst shooting "best shooting team" ... ever.

don't like that Doumbia is coming from a team 4 games under .500 in the 19th ranked conference. but if he defends, we need that. wasn't on the conference's all-defense team though.

if we're all-in on this revenue sharing stuff, I'd expect to see some no-brainer targets.

Right, and I do agree with all above - that it seems we DO need some impact scorers first and foremost (despite my harping on defense). When we landed Tyler Harris - it was fine b/c we were just looking for a filler - and he did a great job at his role. This guy seems like a Harris type, that should be at the end of the portal grab.

The best Mooney-era teams shared a few common things (or at least the 3 teams that went to the NCAA in 20 years). For the other 17 years, it doesn't seem like we had the players that fit the mold.

Elite PG play that could both score and create for others
Big that could pass/facilitate the offense out of the high post
Defenders that could switch and guard multiple positions
All 5 on the court could at least be a threat to hit a 3 with a few that were very good shooters

I would take Doumbia (and Duggan too) right now - if we had more roster spaces opening up to go after impact guards. That is assuming Doumbia is a tough, defensive and rebounding type wing that can play a bit like Tyler Harris. I have to think the staff knows we will have a couple mores spots soon, but who the heck knows.

15 on roster, not counting RS. minus Weaver & GW3, 13; grads, Jason, Jack D, B.Artis Dusan & Dlo (don't think any have remaining eligibility), 8 plus 3 FR and 2 RS equals 13. Leaves only 2 as I see it. Was told expect 4 openings, so I would think more changes coming. If I missed something let me know.
