Bold take to call putting students over athletics and profits “lazy”
And what does “putting students” mean? Are you saying putting their “safety” over athletics? If so, name one college student who has died from covid19 in the entire country. Give me a damn break!!! Peoplelike you will keep this bullshit going forever. How about the students effen SANITY? Have you thought about that? God damn ridiculous!!!

A Dayton student actually died of Covid. But....I have a son at a CAA school, from what I can tell about 75% of their school has tested positive, with little symptoms. While I don't want to put anyone at risk, I do feel that college basketball players are good to play with little risk - other than if they are going to spend time with those in high risk scenarios - which they can avoid for 3-4 months. I do feel the Ivy is being a bit elitist, but then again they are the Ivy. But yes, Covid is rampant at colleges with little effect to the students themselves. I feel bad for the players.

I’m sorry but I refuse to take a virus with such a low death rate seriously. This past weekend I was hanging out with a good friend of mine and he decided to call his cousin who lives in Australia, the conversation with him opened my eyes to what I suspected was already going on. We were told that in Australia they do not wear masks, socially distance or do any of the draconian things we are forced to do here on a daily basis. He also said they never had any kind of 2 week lockdown that killed the virus in their country like our media told us. Oh and Australia also gets a ton of Chinese tourists but still doesn’t have issues with cOViD. Basically our media has lied to us about the severity of the virus in other countries and are obviously lying to us about the severity of it here. Does anyone else think it’s a very odd coincidence that Pfizer has come out with a 90% effective vaccine the week after the election? What about the media hypocrisy this past weekend? The media touted pictures of people partying in the streets after the election but were quick to crucify kids at Notre Dame for rushing the field after their game. Oh but that’s right, the people partying in the streets were all wearing masks. Give me a break. If you can’t see through the farce of this virus then I don’t have anything for you. It is a real virus but it is no worse than the seasonal flu.

There are plenty of threads in the Off Topic section about COVID-19. That said, I agree that shutting down sports (and schools) is not being done for the overall well-being of the students.

Statistically, college students are far, far more likely to die from a car crash than Covid19, but we ain't banning driving. Get a grip folks.
Give it 15 years... these liberal nut jobs will have us all driving automatic cars because "it saves lives". That is almost a guarantee. Why do you think all of the auto driving tech stocks are going through the roof? Our freedoms are lost because we are allowing the weakest, most insecure, most sensitive, most easily offended dipshits determine how our society is run and its sickening and needs to end.

Regardless, I would not be in favor of stopping or cancelling winter sports, as Ivy has done. I believe we can manage it as a society. But doing so requires everyone to take it seriously, and not dismiss it as "no worse than the flu." I view it as the "Friday Night Lights" strategy: clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

Clear eyes: you have to be honest about what we are facing. It is a very, very serious virus that kills people of all ages. Yes, younger people are much less likely to die, but there are countless, countless examples of kids with long term health effects even if they don't die. And of course, kids are carriers and can bring the virus to people who will die.

Full hearts: Just be kind to each other, and take very basic precautions that help protect those around you. Wearing masks. Not hugging or shaking hands. Keeping a little bit of distance wherever possible.

If we do these things, we will succeed as a society.

the Ivy League has 8 schools and 4 of them are doing remote learning. those remote schools were never going to bring just the athletes back to campuses for sports. the league waited as long as possible, probably longer than necessary.

some people are kidding themselves by minimizing covid. new cases are growing exponentially. hospitalizations just hit a new high. daily deaths are climbing again and will most likely surpass the highs based on the number of new cases and hospitalizations. Treatments haven't improved as much as they say. Remdesivir clearly isn't the solution.

CAA football "postponed" their season until spring back when the country was adding 40k new cases per day, like it was going to be better in the spring. now we're at 160k per day. I'm not optimistic for a football season. I'm becoming less optimistic every day that we complete a basketball season.

I have no disdain for you, I just know - as most of us do - that UR does not offer a "statistics degree."

There's a link in the forum which allows you to upload a picture - you can crop off any identifying information.

You’re right, I’m a dumb son of a bitch and should have said economics. Thank you for making sure that was the point taken from that post. Continue on with the right-wing conspiracy theories now
I think you have me mistaken for someone else.
I have no doubt you are numerate; I would be happy to rationally discuss with you the mathematics of shifting risk towards the more vulnerable population - probably best to move that to off-topic, though.
Or, you can continue with the ad hominem.

Maybe one day we’ll have a beer together. I get a little worked up and hot headed online. I tend to forget there’s a person on the other end who has feeling and opinions just like I do. Got a bit too worked up over some comments here and took it out on you. Shouldn’t have done that. First round’s on me.

You’re not very bright then. I have one colleague and two family friends who have died of this disease that somehow isn’t a big deal. All under 60. My colleague contracted it twice before dying. My guess was he wasn’t wearing a mask like the morons who keep this going because they are too soft to endure the pain of a mask. Our family friends had previous medical condition, but would most likely not have been killed by the flu. I also know many people who have survived COVID, though some of them were in the ICU for a week before they were allowed to leave. They said it was much worse than the flu and they had real trouble breathing. Also, the hospital beds in my county are all full, but I guess all these patients are just whining and should stay home because it’s just the flu after all.

PA, had similar experience early on that opened my eyes very quickly. Father of a guy I coached in travel basketball passed away in April from Covid. Mid 50's - a little overweight. Went in the hospital, on respirator, never made it out.

Great news again on the vaccine front from Moderna. Unfortunately I am not sure the impact to college hoops and local businesses b/c we are still looking at a few months for wide distribution, but the more safe and effective vaccines - the quicker and greater % that can have access.

Good post but our pathetic reaction to this threat, and our dependence on the news media to craft our global narrative has destroyed our society and will continue to do so in the future. "The new normal" is not society functioning in peak form, it sucks in every way and is a disaster for our children and future generations.

as expected, most of the Ivy senior class will enter the portal.
maybe a lazy assumption but I'll be surprised if Boeheim doesn't end up at Syracuse with his dad and brother.
