IUPUI Game Thread

I am concerned about playing VCU after seeing the ending to the IUPUI game. This team did not handle the press well at all, and I believe it is back at full force at VCU now.

Didn't see game, but that's not good to hear. Especially if JG is worn out from not being subbed out much. That being said if I was the opposing coach I would man press Jacob full court to make him work that much harder.

2011, if I recall Loyola-C was good defensively last year, and don't think any of the first 3 opponents so far had good D numbers?

Ced would have been in the running for A10 player of the year if he did not get injured his senior year. Was top 5 in the A10 in points, assists and steals. He was very good, better than SDJ.
CL had the misfortune of showing up after KA. KA was better with the ball and shooting but CL was a better defender and did all the little things great (Remember the screen he set for Brothers to send the VCU game to OT?.) If he had the same supporting cast KA did would of done some serious damage to the record books and postseason. IIRC was putting up better/similar numbers then KAs senior year before he got hurt.

40% from the non top 3 is asking too much. If our top 3 average around 17 a game, that would give us 51. 40% from the others would be 34 points, which means we would average 85 a game. Villanova was #1 in scoring last year and averaged 87 a game, and only 5 teams averaged 85 or more.
We are averaging 82. We do need more from the bench.

IUPUI had a great game plan tonight. Pack the zone tight and let Grant shoot all the wide open 3’s he wanted. It would have worked if it were not for Gilyard saying “FU Jobu I do it myself”.

According to kenpom, this Loyola team could very well be better than any team in the A10 this year, and might be the toughest game on our schedule (they are currently behind Georgetown, but they are close). Loyola is much, much better than the cupcakes we have played so far. I am not optimistic.
Will there be any offensive rebounds by either team in this game?

I asked because out of 353 teams we are 346th in O rebounds, they are 342nd...

The year we went to the Sweet 16, we were 316th in O rebounds. The year before that, when we got an at large bid and 7th seed in the dance, we were 323rd.

....because we made shots and there were fewer rebounds to get. And we also played great defense back then, which masks poor offensive rebounding.

And to go the route as you have occasionally with your posting here, IF Louisville doesn't get upset by M ST, there probably is no sweet 16. Both sides can play the IF Game. ;)

A few thoughts from last night:

-Concerning to see us only go 7 deep: Sal, Andre, Matt will really benefit in the long run from receiving even just a few minutes in competitive games like last night.

-The last Spider I remember that could take over a game and score in huge bunches like Jacob can is Kendall, so fun to watch.

-Grant forced things a little last night, especially in the first half. But as the game went on he recognized the double and triple teams and passed out of them better. Him attracting so much attention helped open up things for Jacob and Nick.

-Free throws - so much of free throw shooting is mental. Nick and Jacob should never combine for 6 missed free throws. We know they are better than that but free throw shooting is a strange art.

I thought the defense, outside of the first 5 mins and the last 5, looked pretty good tonight. The rotation and switching was much better than last year. And our guys looked more active. Even some doubling on the ball on the wing?!?!

We’re not there yet, but some improvements for sure. Cayo is light years ahead of where he was last year, and it’s showing, especially on the defensive side.

Wow, you have 3 guys who can really play the game. If they can continue with more difficult competition you'll be competitive in the A10. We shall see.

All the Spiders I spoke with tonight are uttering the same three words: "I like Wojcik!"

His 4 free throws were money. Didn't hesitate, put them up with the confidence he would make them, and through the net they went.

Different note - the refs spent an inordinate amount of time going to the monitor in the waning moments to review plays. Isn't the idea of having three refs to make that at least rare? Can understand it every now and then but it prolonged the game unnecessarily and interrupted the flow of the game.

And what were our opponents ranked in O rebounding? I mentioned it in my post because it is unusual to see both teams take that strategy...

We had just beaten a 5th seeded Vandy, so why couldn't we have beaten 4th seeded Louisville? But, I will play along here. Let's say we played them in the 2nd round and lost. Are you really going to criticize an A-10 title, a 1st round tourney win over Vandy, and a 28 win season? Wow. Just wow.

Agree, and though Yates has yet to show anything on offense, he seems to have picked up the defense. He was solid there last night

They can, they will, and we will.
Good. I want to see some really good UR VCU games this year. Our squad with Evans is capable of winning the A10. He's the program difference-maker. Have a look on Monday vs Temple. I'll be there in Brooklyn. Should be a really nice game. @SouthJerseySpiderFan . wanna go? There's going to be a big turnout at the brew-pub. Fun for all.

Will we see you (the poster) there next year? We will be there, same tournament, probably same Monday.

I wouldn't worry about who scores the points. I be more worried about the bench only playing 17% of the minutes tonight. First 2 games averaged 21%. Unless the bench gets more time, even without providing many points, don't see how the team will do well without slowing the pace down. Especially once they start going against better competition. Loyola will be a good test.

Also know Mooney might not feel comfortable with Sal, but if he can't get in against this competition, when? I really thought Sal would be a key in UR having a successful season. Still early but Sal won't get better sitting on the bench.

I just realized Sal has the 6th most points scored on the team right now, despite only playing 3 minutes total and making 1 field goal. We have no offense on the bench, if there is an injury or foul trouble the team will really struggle.

Yes, things will be ok when we finally get to the lowly A-10 portion of the schedule. Spiders could lose to Longwood, but still come in third in the pathetic A-10.

I'm a huge Bob fan, but "Jagwire" was the most annoying thing from an announcer ever. And he said it about a hundred times. Drove me nuts. I started yelling at the TV "please just call them the Jags!".
It may be bad but don’t go to wire over it!
