IUPUI Game Thread

A lot of game film for coach to work on ball movement. If you have 2 guys on you, someone else had to be open...

IUPUI might not be good, but great to see the Spiders put them down though the ending wasn't pretty. Now on to Loyola and hopefully team surprises us with a win.

According to kenpom, this Loyola team could very well be better than any team in the A10 this year, and might be the toughest game on our schedule (they are currently behind Georgetown, but they are close). Loyola is much, much better than the cupcakes we have played so far. I am not optimistic.

Actually, IUPUI might at least be decent. They beat BC, and not only gave Xavier a game for 30 minutes, but went on a 20-2 run against them to turn an eqarly 18 point deficit into a 2nd half tie game. But, yes, great to see us get the W even though the ending was shaky.

True, but since I'll be at the game hoping I get my money's worth till the final buzzer. A win would sure make up for the Longwood loss.

My thoughts on the game:

Positives:
- fantastic production by the big 3. Scored 71 of the 76 points
- spiders came out with intensity the 2nd half.
- Jacob Gilyard had an amazing game. If there’s one positive thing about Mooney we can all agree on is that he has brought in great short short guards (KA, K0, SDJ, Gilyard, and Ced if you want to include him)
- Cayo had some nice big blocks that helped stop IUPUI’s moment in the 2nd half

Improvements:
- while the big 3 dominated the game. We need more balanced scoring. We don’t need players like Cayo or Wojcik scoring 20+ but the non-big 3 players should try and account for 40% of scoring. Today it was only 9%
- we need to do better closing the game. It got nerve wracking when we were up 4 with 20 or so seconds left.

Overall, we should’ve beaten IUPUI. This team might have a sneaky good season and end up sub-200. Big games next week. Would love to get 1 of the 2 in Florida

I'm still recovering from my surgery so I wasn't there. Sick of Bob butchering the name "Jaguars" (it's not Jagwires)

40% from the non top 3 is asking too much. If our top 3 average around 17 a game, that would give us 51. 40% from the others would be 34 points, which means we would average 85 a game. Villanova was #1 in scoring last year and averaged 87 a game, and only 5 teams averaged 85 or more.

I’ll agree 40% may be on the higher end but I’d still like to see about 2/3 (67%) of scoring coming from big 3 and 1/3 (33%) scoring coming from everyone else. The more balanced we can try and be with scoring, the harder it is for teams to game plan against us

Ced would have been in the running for A10 player of the year if he did not get injured his senior year. Was top 5 in the A10 in points, assists and steals. He was very good, better than SDJ.

To clarify, when I said “Ced if you want to include him” I meant in the sense that Ced was not a short guard. He is 6’ 1”. I was specifically noting talented guards that Mooney has brought in who have been overlooked due to their height. Ced is definitely talented and was a great player for us. Wouldn’t consider him as a “short” guard

Edit: I didn’t realize KA was 6’ thought he was shorter than that. So in a way you could consider the talented “short” guards Mooney has brought in (at least those I know of) as: K0, SDJ, and Gilyard

I say let our 3 stars be stars. We were balanced last year and that did nothing for us. There will be games where our top 3 are off and we will need more production elsewhere, but I would not go into a game thinking we want or need more balance.

If we win games, the big 3 can score all of our points. However, teams will game plan to stop them and force other guys to make plays. Plus, there’s always the reality that one or more of them has a bad shooting night. While it shouldn’t be forced to try and get 1/3 of points coming from everyone else, I feel as though the team will be more successful in the long run if that naturally happens.

And with respect to last year, I think you, sman, and others hit the nail on the head. Just because we had the 5 most individually talented players in at once doesn’t mean it was the best team setup. With the roles Wojcik and Cayo have, it’s more conducive to being a supporting cast which is what we need from them. But supporting cast should mean more than 7 points from them (and everyone else) for us to have the best chances of winning

They need to start putting warnings on the tickets. "Don't come to the came if you have a heart condition." The 1st 15 minutes and final minute were very stressful. It is impressive the team didn't panic when things looked very very very bad. We made adjustments and out scored them by around 25 until the final 90 seconds of the game. Look much better when Grant is score down below verse throwing up 3 pointers.

Good win for the team.

I hear you, and no question we will need more than 7 points from everyone else most games.

I wouldn't worry about who scores the points. I be more worried about the bench only playing 17% of the minutes tonight. First 2 games averaged 21%. Unless the bench gets more time, even without providing many points, don't see how the team will do well without slowing the pace down. Especially once they start going against better competition. Loyola will be a good test.

Also know Mooney might not feel comfortable with Sal, but if he can't get in against this competition, when? I really thought Sal would be a key in UR having a successful season. Still early but Sal won't get better sitting on the bench.

I am concerned about playing VCU after seeing the ending to the IUPUI game. This team did not handle the press well at all, and I believe it is back at full force at VCU now.
