How to turn down a job in the span of a tweet

All of the consternations down on Broad St about the commitment of there coach to there program. If Shaka is "so" committed to VCU, you would think it would be quite easy to quell these rumors. See Jay Wright's response to Texas's overtures.

On Tuesday, Seth Davis of Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports tweeted:

I've learned that Texas' search firm reached out to representatives of Jay Wright to gauge his interest. Was told thanks but no thanks.
- Seth Davis (@SethDavisHoops)

His refusal to issue such a simple proclamation means:

1. He is going to Texas, IF Texas offers him the job OR
2. He is using the Texas negiotations, to milk more $$$ out of VCU AND
3. He is a media whore, who loves his name in the limelight.

Given his pattern of having this done every year, I am leaning towards options 2 and 3.

You've got it all figured out. If only Coach Smart was more like Chris Mooney, then nobody in the national media would ever write about him and VCU could be as irrelevant as Richmond.

Its easy to get lots of media attention when you are constantly preening for it. For the record, I hope he stays, I think his one trick pony is just about up and clearly we have figured out how to beat it.

UR is 2-4 against VCU over the last two years, and you lost when it counted most, so it would be odd for you to think Mooney figured out anything.

Thank goodness we have a new thread related to someone who doesn't coach our team.

Agreed. Would much rather talk UR bball. Although I do like the "Spiders Unite" username...it definitely throws folks off the scent...at least for 3 milliseconds until the vcu post becomes painfully self-evident. Way to be sneaky dude.

Becoming the first higher seed in the history of the NCAA Tournament to blow double digit leads to lower seeds in back to back NCAAs.

Thanks, man. I know you guys think we're all dumb, but sometimes we can be clever as well.

Hopefully, this little exchange will allow us to be friends. Who knows, maybe both fan bases could even start to support one another. I know it sounds crazy, but I'll make this pledge to you right now: if you support our nationally ranked VCU team in the NCAA tournament next year, then I'll support Richmond in the 2016 CIT tournament.

Due to my generosity, I'll even make a leap of faith right now and say this: Look out New Jersey Institute of Technology, the Spiders of 2016 are coming, and they are bringing dozens (at least!) of their fans with them to the CIT.

There, can we be friends now?

I guess Richmond doesn't have that problem, since they rarely make the tournament, and when they do, they are usually (always?) the higher seed.

Spiders Unite, let's clarify. You are not clever. You went to vcu so you are stupid. Now get back to your paper route.

Wait, was that supposed to be clever? I suppose calling me stupid might be considered clever if you had the intellect of a fifth grader. What grade are you in again, Ulla?

have said before and will repeat, coaches are crazy not to listen, not to interview. you learn so much about other opportunities, how that program, that athletic dept, works, handles things, their resources, etc. you learn some things someone else has in their package which you may not but you can now go back and request. it just makes complete sense to listen, learn and know what is out there and maybe find out that something is much better than you thought or much worse than you thought. it also gives you practice in the interview process. encourage all coaches to be open, flexible and to not hide, no matter how happy you think you are. typically, agents do the majority of the upfront talking which can eliminate schools very quickly. not having an agent kind of puts the coach in the hot seat, no buffer and in today's world, feel they are a real advantage. if shaka does not have one, no big deal, does make if more difficult for him.

Fan 1, while normally, I abhor deleted or locked threads, I started this mess and now it is just allowing some trolls to get their jollies off, so feel free to do with it what you must.

Here's your lesson for the day: YOU DON'T WANT TO GO TO WAR, WITH THE RAAAAAAMS, DON'T START NO STUFF WON'T BE NO STUFF.

First off - I am not sold that we have figured anything out against VCU. Yes - we were 2-1 against them last season, but our record against them over the last several years is not very good. We need another year of sweeping them to say we figured them out. I do think we matchup well with them because we usually have a strong guard to handle the ball and the pressure (Anderson, Anthony, Lindsay, ShawnDre). Some teams don't have that luxury and VCU exploits it.

In terms of Shaka using this Texas job to get more money and stay in the media spotlight - that is true for just about every coach out there who is on the top of the hot coaching lists. Even our past UR coaches used this method as well to get more money. I vaguely remember Beilein interviewing with Wake Forest after UR made the A10 finals and a run in the NIT. It was in the newspaper and media reports. He loses the job to Skip Prosser, but in the meantime - got a hefty pay raise from UR. Only to leave UR 2 weeks later for West Virginia.

Mooney - did he not publicly talk to Boston College after we lost to St. Mary's in the NCAA tourney. Only a few days later - he is awarded a new contract with a hefty raise and a 7 year extension. I also believe he was rumored in the media to be in the running for the Ga Tech job after UR's sweet sixteen appearance, result - he stays at UR with a raise and now a 10 year extension.

I don't fault the coaches for doing this - its no different than someone walking into their employer and saying - "I have a job offer elsewhere I am seriously considering - here is the offer" and the employer has to make a decision - do I want to counter to keep this employee or just let them go. This is just the business side of basketball and the media aspect plays a part because the more rumors out there about a coach being on the top of list at an open spot - the more pressure on the current school to do something to make them stay. And that something - more money and extensions (job security).

Trap no Beilein did not leave 2 weeks later to WVA. The Wake thing was the year before. He was interested in Wake but also turned down Rutgers that same year.

Sorry its hard to concentrate after reading the "...don't start no stuff wont be no stuff" That can't be a real vcu thing but it probably is. unintentionally funny. That would be a great pinned comment just for laughs.

The rest of the trolling I wish we'd have a little urfan management its gotten so tiresome to navigate but have come to expect next to nothing from him in that department.

This crap goes on over here, and I got rejected even trying to sign up for the VCU board.

+1. Can we just ban people who are here for no reason than to troll?

You're right. Between Fordham, URI and RPI, we're clearly outnumbered.
