With the latest COVID pause and an incomplete season, how many of the starting five return?
As of now, the starting 5 are Golden, Gilyard, Francis, Cayo and Burton. I think most of them will see this as unfinished business,

Return? From this COVID pause? We will see...

I got my degree and I have spent this type of chaotic season of uncertainty, I am gone.

I think the actual answer is zero -- they are all going to transfer to Louisville.

I can say with 100% confidence that this is incorrect.

You chose a very curious time in this season to pour yourself another glass of kool-aid.
Kool-aid is one of my favorite drinks, especially when combined with alcohol.
By the way, more than one person believes that all 5 starters will return. Drink up.

Only scenario I could see any of them returning is if the virus gets out of control again and playing overseas seems to be very limited and or dangerous. Because remember - overseas deals are not guaranteed in any way. You could play for 2 weeks, the team cuts you out of the blue or the season goes on pause or cancelled - your not getting a paycheck. So if that was the case - maybe the safe bet is to stay at UR.
But with the vaccine out there now - this is less likely to occur.

Is that the only scenario where Burton returns?

Yeah, and that other person is also completely clueless. I guarantee you all 5 will not return.
It's just an opinion poll on a message board. Why not just answer, or kindly give your opinion and move on?

This is a tough one to answer because there's still so much uncertainty with how the season ends. But, I don't think it's crazy to think one senior or maybe more might come back. Some guys love college life, and some guys don't. Some guys love it at UR more than others. If a couple of our college guys were having the time of their lives before covid last year, maybe they might want to stay and get that back next year. We heard a lot of talk on here the past off season about how we would not have everyone back because of grad transfers. Yet, they all came back.

I've heard talk about why would any of them give up possible money overseas? Well, that would be there the following year, right? With possibly even a better contract with a full season in next year. And, how would this be any different than guys from all over the place who decide to stay an extra year when they were pro prospects? It happens quite often.

Honestly, I don't care who does and does not return at this point. Whatever happens we will find a way somehow to screw it up because that is what we do.

In answering this question it is important to remember that the players have very different opinions relative to the university, basketball program and coaching staff than a vast majority of this board, which is extremely negative. If you take the view of people who post on this board, everything is terrible and always will be terrible, therefore, nobody is coming back. If you take the view of the players, who historical have shown strong loyalty to the program and coach, you arrive at a completely different answer. Here are my thoughts:
  • Burton, very good chance he will return.
  • Sherod, 50% probability. I do not think he plans to go pro. Sounds like he wants to teach and if that is the case and his knee heals, he might give it another shot.
  • Gilyard, 50% probability. There is a massive difference in compensation between the top league in Europe and all the others. Gilly has played at an All American level in every aspect, but shooting this year. If he were to return without Blake, he might revert back to the shooting abilities he demonstrated his sophomore year, where he lead the A10 in score during conference play. Coming back would also allow him to set the All-time NCAA record for steals. Both of these could lead to a much better pro career.
  • Cayo, 50% probability. If he can improve over this year, it might help him get a much better contract in Europe.
  • Golden 25% probability. He probably could get a top contract with a top team in Europe. He might come back if Gilly and others return to get to enjoy a winning season in front of sellout crowds. Also depends on what is happening over in Europe this summer.
  • Blake 15% probability. All depends on what type of pro contract he could get. Not sure him playing another year would help enhance his chances of a better contract.

Burton will return. The team will be bad, but he will be able to put some really good numbers statistically. If Burton decides to leave - I think his best option is with the grad transfer year (assuming he can graduate early) or if the NCAA waives sitting out for all transfers one time (a possibility in the future) - then maybe when he is a senior be moves to a power 5 team with NCAA aspirations to try an improve his pro stock by showing he can produce on the bigger level.

Burton is a sophomore. I don't know why we are talking about him leaving in the same vein as our 5 seniors.
He might want a chance at playing in an NCAA tournament and probably realizes it won't happen at UR next year. My guess is that he stays and can be the big fish in a little pond.

I voted 1, but I would have voted zero. The real question should be
Is Mooney returning? I would vote "I hope not"

I don't see a chip on this teams shoulder at all. Last year, yeah. This year, I think they've been reading their press clipping a bit too much.

This is from a different thread, but I think it applies here.

I don’t see what I saw last year either, which is why I think we will have essentially totally new team next season. Simply put, the seniors have grown tired of the quest.

There could be a player or two that stay another year, but I would be somewhat surprised. However, not knowing what the alternatives truly are, it is impossible to have a gut reaction to what each individual senior will do.

it will be interesting to see at schools all across the country if many seniors decide to stay for the extra year. I lean towards thinking a lot will be ready to move on. The season can be a grind and this year is worse than any before with no fans, limited interaction on campuses, and covid pauses.

Sadly, I agree. It might be just the grind of COVID, the forced isolation, playing in empty arenas has taken it out of them. But yeah, the seniors in particular. And then their is Burton, who has unquestionably elevated his game to an entirely different level out there ballin.

There are several teams from the NE that would appreciate his talent, closer to home, and better chance to play in the big gig.

Throw on top of it, they may have family members dealing with the virus, physically or financially.

Feel bad for the guys that they don't get to go out with a normal season with the passion of fans in attendance and the adoration of the other students around campus. Doesn't seem fair.

At least 3 of them will be 24 next year. Probably time to get on with life and start making some money in basketball or otherwise.

To add, how many extra scholarships is the AD in position to absorb next year? Because of covid exemptions, will the football team have more than 65 scholarships? Is the basketball team going to have 13 or go up to 18?

What's the affect on incoming freshman and even the current freshmen on the roster?

If past history is any indication, I’m sure we’ll cut baseball or football scholarships before men’s basketball loses anything.

Good questions. Many good questions, with not many good answers. Knowing NCAA needs tourney dollars and wishes a complete season and F4 will happen; I have doubts.
