How do we get a fourth seed in the A10?

We are currently tied for 5th place at (7-6) with St. Louis, behind both VCU (7-5) and Davidson (8-4), who we beat in a tie breaker. Saturday night is an important game for us against St. Louis. It looks like VCU and Davidson have harder schedules to finish off the season. They first need to play each other and then both have to play St. Bonaventure, with Davidson also having to play RI. It is going to be an exciting end to the season. Who should we be rooting for in the VCU vs Davidson game?

Doesn't really matter who wins between vcu and Davidson because we swept them both. However just because it's vcu I have to pull for Davidson.

Well, given that VCU drops into a tie with us with just 1 loss, it does matter. Davidson needs 2 losses for our tiebreak to matter. Not that anyone here needed any more reason to root against them....

We need to win at least 4 of the next 5 to get top 4 seed. If we win 3 of 5, we'll have to be lucky with other results. Win 2 or fewer and we won't get it.

I want to avoid URI, George Mason, and VCU in the tourney in that order. However I wouldn't want to do it at the expense of missing the double-bye because it gives players more chance to rest, know for a fact we will make quarters, and we can hope other teams knock off the above 3.

It'll be a grinder but beating St. Louis this Saturday will be huge because then we break even with them on the tiebreaker and then it goes to record against top opponents I believe? If so, we've beaten Davidson and VCU and lost to URI, Bonnie's so we could possibly have the tiebreaker on St. Louis as well

Davidson has a tough remaining schedule (@ Duq, @ Bonnies, URI). VCU still has Bonnies, but should otherwise run the table. Regardless of who wins tonight, we may need to go 4-1 to take advantage of the tiebreakers over those two teams.

The wildcard is St. Louis. They are now down to 7 scholarship players after the Jordan Goodwin suspension. If we beat St. Louis on Saturday, we should finish top-4. If we lose, I don't think we finish top-4.

So, be at the Robins Center on Saturday. Come lubricate at the Brews event beforehand. And make noise.

Is this a question? VCU could be playing the North Korean national team and I would pull for North Korea. Go Wildcats. I hope Larry Bird Jr. lights them up for 40.

No doubt about that. No doubt about that.

Go 3-2 and we likely get the 4th seed with a tie breaker over VCU.

VCU losses big to Davison. UR in 4th place with same record as VCU and St. Louis. Need to win on Saturday to stay there. It is probably a 3 team race for 4th place. Every game counts.

Hopefully Davidson drops some games down the stretch so we can avoid URI side of the bracket (assuming we get the bye).

We probably need to win all 5 to get to the 2/3, but only need to win 3 to get the 4 seed.
Still a lot of variables. SBU & Davidson both have a home game vs URI. And play each other.

If our goal is to make the NCAA Tournament I think we are better off playing RI in the semi finals than the Finals. Our starters will be pretty tired playing 3 nights in a row and RI has a deep bench.

URI will not win the A10 tournament, bet the farm on that. Whoever beats them will win the A10 though. I originally predicted vcu to win the tournament but I'm starting to change my mind about that, they look terrible. SBU might be the pick now.

Our goal is to finish Top 4 in the A-10. You won't here a goal of an NCAA bid uttered around the Robins Center.

Bonnies go 4-1 rest of the way (lose to URI);
Davidson goes 2-3 rest of the way (@ SBU; @Duq; URI);
VCU goes 4-1 rst of the way (SBU);
SLU goes 3-2 rest of the way (@ UR; SBU)
UR goes 4-1 rest of the way (@GMU)

We finish in three way tie with Davidson and VCU for 3,4,5 and win the tie-break for third place.

Bonnies winning all except URI (and that one doesn't matter) is key because they play all three other teams we are competing with!

If our goal is making the NCAA tournament we are better off not playing URI at all. They have 2 chances to lose before we potentially play them if we are a 2 or 3 seed, only 1 chance against a bad team if we get a 4 seed.

The only Mooney teams to make the NCAA were both 3 seeds in the A10.

Davidson finishes with Bona and Rhody back to back, a tough duo as we know. So they could lose at least two more, but losing three of their last five might be a tall ask. They play UMass, Fordham and at Duquesne, too. If we win out, pretty sure we'd be the three. If we go 4-1, we probably have a 50-50 chance of ending up tied with Davidson, which gets us there also.

It would help if Duquesne could get back to being the team that came within a basket at URI.

Whatever, we have to do to avoid Rhody. We are not beating them in DC this year. They are too big, too deep, too talented. It will be like the Dayton A-10 game a few years ago, we will leave DC with an embarrassing loss.

Richmond doesn't want to play the following teams in DC: George Mason, VCU, Rhode Island, St.Bonaventure.

The standings in the A10 have gotten a lot tighter. We have 3 teams tied for 4th place and 3 others a game back. Tonight is a very important game.

That was a painful loss last night, but there is still hope. Below are 4 options to make the top 4.

1. Prey
2. Believe in miracles
3. Focus on next year
4. Start rooting for the girls swim team

The good news is we will hopefully get to play an additional game in the Tournament, giving Gilyard and Golden a better chance to break their records. AT least that is something.

Team Paper -
Davidson
GW

Team Rock -
GMU
SLU

We should change our name to the Richmond Scissors...

It will be interesting to see the game Wednesday after the way GW played yesterday.

That's the Women's Swimming and Diving team. They've won 15 of the past 17 A-10 Championships.
"girls?" Maybe you should show some respect, and think about the athletes before you post such hurtful things.

ChoppinBroccoli, I was aware of how good they were, which is why I used them. One of my friends has frequently mentioned how good they are. Your false accusation about a sexist comment or “fake new” is an example of everything that is bad with our country.

With that said, I don't think any male or female sports team at U of R is as important from a nation branding, impact on number of applications or alumni giving than Basketball. That doesn't mean other sports are important. Basketball has frequently been on national television, the scores of the games are listed in many newspapers across the country, our home attendance is approximately 100,000 annually.

Hmm. You called them the girls swim team. I didn't make that up. Fake news like this...?
Some people on this forum say very hurtful things about some of the players.

this has nothing to do with the topic and is not likely have any positive impact

Agreed. Back to the topic:

It's going to be exceedingly difficult to finish in the top 4, without some weird multi-way tiebreaker for 4th, or if Davidson completely falls apart. They finish with games against the top 2, but control their destiny this week.

Most likely top 4 will be:
URI
St. Bonaventure
Davidson
St. Louis

At this point our best bet is to finish 5 or 6 (probably 6, though our tiebreakers might push us to 5) so we can catch one of the teams that had to play the first night.

Short answer - our probability of being in the top 4 seeds for the A-10 tournament is very low.

just did a quick look, we could possibly beat GM in the last regular season game and then face them again in our opening game of the A-10

The probelm herein is that we’ve shown limited capacity to beat GM, so there goes that theory I think.

my point is we would have to break the string 2x;s in a row-- or if we lost to them we may avoid them for a round
