hmm. we just offered a JuCo

Then why did we recruit and offer him in the first place? Mooney's been here 13 years. It's a requirement by now that he understand who he can and can't admit. Getting tired of this as an excuse.
We simply don't know all of the details. You don't necessarily know whether a guy can be admitted until well into the process. We have no knowledge of how the offer was made...perhaps Mooney said "We'd love to have you, but we haven't taken a JuCo before and we'd need to see how admissions shakes out on this." That gets tweeted out as an "offer" with no indication of any conditions or uncertainty.

I'm no Mooney apologist, but he gets bashed for landing subpar recruits and then when he tries to push the envelope with some non-traditional recruiting he gets bashed for going after guys that can't get admitted. Fact is, admissions happens near the end of the process and when the guy is near the borderline you can't tell whether you'll be able to get him in or not until the end.

Should Mooney not have gone after Bernard last year because he couldn't get admitted? I'm frustrated with admissions on that one, not Mooney.

I'm sure we don't offer a kid without having a pretty good idea of where he is academically. It's entirely possible that we offered him and then liked the Wagner and Columbia kids better, or something changed and we withdrew the offer, who knows. But I'm just not buying that we are offering kids without much sense of whether we can get them in or not. Yeah, we got screwed on Bernard, but that was a really close case. It's not like he was a D- student and we were shocked that admissions denied him.

Often times we are our own worst enemies. Why do we speak negative about anyone during the recruiting process whether they are a fit or not. I truly believe that we should let the process work out first, give then a chance to prove their worth before bashing them. We need to be positive ambassadors for the university too. Let's play our part during this process.

Just curious because I assumed something prompted you to say that in this thread, and I didn't see anything resembling bashing, that's all. Personally I'm disappointed we didnt get this kid.

not sure what you are referencing, I read the positive 2-1 in this thread

I realize that posts (email in general) are interpreted by the reader differently.
I thought he was talking about the constant bashing of the coach and the program,
NOT the player.

Interesting that Roydell, a guard, chose McNeese after the Spiders hosted two guard recruits on Friday.

I think you nailed it. We got the higher profile guy with better options so our backup plan went somewhere else. This is why it is so hard to evaluate how well the recruiting process went until it is completely over. This off-season could still turn out great or be a disaster.

Exactly, Mountain, that was my point.

I agree. between Francis and Roydell, Francis is so much better a shooter. the plus for Roydell was he'd be available right away, he's long, and really athletic. but we got what we wanted.

I see it more like we need Francis + an immediately eligible guard. We need a replacement for Fore this year.

Only if you want NS and DMB playing the 3 and 4 again. We had youth and height problems last year. Plugging another guard in perpetuates the height problem. If our choices are another quality guard or another JMA, then yes we have to go the guard route but I'd rather that be the back-up plan.

Francis is a long term answer for 2019/20 and 2020/21. we're likely still look at a guard for 2018/19.

Gilyard and Francis ... they'll be an incredible shooting combo at guard. could have 3 guys shooting 40% from 3 on the floor together with Sherod.

spiderman, the shooting by Jake and Blake will make opposing teams ake (ache; sorry had to do this). But what excites me the most is both of them are good defenders especially regarding steals. Each led his team in steals last year.

I really like the pickup of Francis. I do worry a bit that because he and Gilyard are seemingly very similar, it could be another case in which we have too many of one kind of player and not enough of another.

I look at our team from this past season and feel like we had a bunch of players who individually were very talented, but their skill sets didn't necessarily complement each other's collectively as a team.

Eight, Blake is much more a shooting guard (and boy can he ever shoot!); he will enjoy assists from Jake. They are actually very complementary.

yeah, I agree. the only similarities are that they're small, fast, and shoot really well.
Jacob is totally a PG (that can shoot). Blake is totally a SG (that hopefully can handle and pass as a combo guard).

Blake can shoot and score that is for sure. Does anyone know what his defense is like though?

we know he gets steals. no idea if he's a good defender in other ways, but he'll obviously be at a size disadvantage if he's forced to rotate inside.
