Hardt - Strategic plan core principles

I have no doubt that both our football and men's basketball team will successfully compete for their league championship this year. I mean they both are going to play a full league schedule to compete for it. So, goal achieved.

I doubt either football or basketball will win their league championship though. So, if the goal was to win, we wouldn't have met the goal.
Exactly 97 - I think Hardt knows fans are not happy, the billboard last year alone proved that - so if he says WIN, and we don't win - the pressure will get even worse. He says "successfully compete" he at least as something to fall back on - but to be honest, no one is buying what he is selling.

Mooney is terrible under pressure. Despite all the offensive talent we have, if things go sideways early I think Moon will drive this thing right into the ground. No, I am not cheering for that despite my wishes for a replacement - but I don't have any confidence that he will be able to provide the direction needed. Gotta hope Gilly and Francis can do it themselves like KA and Gonzo.

Yeah, that is what I don't get. We are not fooling anyone with this "successfully compete" and if we don't win this year, its not like his critics are gonna say "Well, that's OK because we met our strategic plan goal of successfully competing".

why have committees come up with some statement? obviously, the goal of any game is to win, thus the athletic department's main goal should be to win games. along the way, want our student/athletes to have a great experience, which winning should allow no matter the other minutia involved, and to give them the support to earn a degree. not sure we need anymore committees or statements, we all should understand what we want to do. maybe a committee to decide when we are not being successful at any of those three items and what to do about it. keep in mind that every school is out there working to win, just that some do it and others do not. so don't tell us the obvious, tell us what is going to happen when none of the above is taking place either overall or within each sport.

A man whose entire adult life has been involved with competitive college sports, and
you think that has changed when he came to Richmond.
Someone has to explain the logic of your thinking.

While I am all for strategic plans and being thoughtful about how we are managing athletics at UR, I think the plan could be really simplified to 3 points.

1. Win a lot
2. Graduate the vast majority of our athletes
3. Don't cheat doing 1&2

This would definitely save some time and perhaps some printing costs.

Yes, but if Hardt said this exact thing, people on here would get on him big time for that. Remember, they like specifics on here. You can't say "a lot", you have to give a number, and it has to include the word championship. Can't say "vast majority" either. I have no issues with what you said, but you know Hardt would get destroyed on here for talking like this.

It was meant to be tongue in cheek.

Fwiw, I don't think Hardt deserves to get a colonoscopy for all of the stuff he says but I also don't think he's delivered on much to earn him a lot of credibility either. He's just kind of "there" at the moment.

A colonoscopy is not fun. However a colonoscopy in the summer of 2007 saved my life!

Yeah, I definitely would hate it if he said "Our goal is to win a lot of championships and graduate great student athletes while abiding by the rules."

What an awful thing that would be to say!

I would like him to have made a specific mention of our priority sports just so I know what they are. For all I know he wasn't talking about basketball or football.
It's also weird that he talked about the Queally Athletic Center but never mentioned basketball.
Yep, not talking about our basketball team's upcoming season stood out to me as well. Guess he's just heeding to the lesson of . . . "if you can't say anything nice, say nothing at all." Very sad state of affairs when you get a lot of "yada, yada, yada" and come away with everyone trying to understand what "successfully competing" means. Agree if you can't say our goal is to win championships, it's just the same blather we've heard for years. If you erroneously deleted the email, you didn't miss anything.

I didn't get to listen to whole hour but heard a lot of talk about football (understandable) and facilities. Maybe, I missed it but did our AD not even talk about our flagship sport during an entire hour radio interview on the day we released our schedule?

Go to 51:00 for basketball & schedule stuff. Thinks we'll have "solid" schedule but you have to listen for yourself. Hearing him speak you're just like wtf did he say. Nothing about Joey Bags Lunardi and Mooney toughest comments. Let's pretend neither happened. It sounded like a guy rationalizing to himself and possibly boosting Mooney up for his sake and PQs. I didn't realize my opinion of him could go down even more, but every time he speaks it does.

scheduled in a way that was reflective of where we are programmatically, trying to make strides recreating success that Spiders want to be known for

Sorry I told you guys how pretentious he was, is that line not the perfect example? Programmatically lol.

I'm not quite as upset as some of you guys but I can't pass this up...
Pro-grammatically? as opposed to Anti-grammatically?

Wow. Have you guys never heard of the word programmatically? You are really showing an agenda by getting on him for saying something more than acceptable when talking about a basketball team. And, he is 100% correct. This is the perfect schedule for us.

Nah, what has happened is that as Mooney has cowered and lost his fastball, we have scheduled weaker. We need to get some folks in the AD and a HC that talks the talk and walks the walk.

Acceptable at summer computer camp.

Here it just comes across as pretentious af jibber jabber. Now he is pretentious so in that respect sounding that way when he speaks isn’t a surprise. I wonder if Hayden Fry at Iowa ever used the word programmatically. Lol.

Also he described schedule as far from perfect. To me he seemed a little down on it actually that it was intentionally a little weaker than it could have been. Maybe some honesty once u cut thru the pretentiousness to get there.

Programmatically. So great. Can’t wait to use that word all the time.

We are on a 8 year ncaa drought programmatically. Let’s end it boys!
