We should win by a large margin. What will be interesting is playing time of the freshman during the first 2 periods. If we see 3 with over 15 minutes I would view that as a good sign.

If you know anything about Hampden-Sydney, you know they couldn't have a girl's team.
How about Morehouse? St John’s of Minnesota? (Did they merge with St Benedict?)
And Wabash? (Who recruited me)
Any change in any of those since 2008?

They have 4 of 6 returning contributors.
McHale, Quinn, Johnson, Crute
not in order - 6'4', 6'2", 6'1", 5'9"
Not including incoming Freshmen, 3 largest players - 6'8", 6'6", 6'4"
2017-2018 record 6-20

Because we came out and got waxed by Delaware in the season opener last year, and it looked like we never played defense against anyone other than Keith Oddo before. Running stuff against others before it counts is worthwhile.

missing my point. I like the UVA scrimmage, that is a good team. But a D3 team coming off 6-20, not sure how that helps. Why not a better team?

because we're not allowed to?
We are not allowed to have exhibition against D1 only closed scrimmage.

But we are allowed to have exhibition against 28-3 D2. Not that I care...

I just want to see the 7 guys I haven't seen on our court before.

Actually it is Hampden-Sydney College.

yes we could scrimmage a better D2 or D3 team. but I don't care either. it's a scrimmage. I want coach to play guys and do whatever he thinks we need to do without worrying about whether we beat a team or beat them by enough points to satisfy message board posters. this one doesn't count. I'm more interested in the next one.

Does Duke have an exhibition against VUU? Are we not Duke?;)

Well, truth is Union isn't Union of old...

Coach can see if out of bounds plays need work. No excuse throw ball in BACK COURT. Key to success is oob plays this year. Tells how players listen to coaches to me

Did not Randy Mac beat us back in the 70s? If I remember they either won a DIII championship or finished ranked high nationally.

Look, there are reasons to be upset at our coaching staff. There's no hiding the NCAA tournament drought, lack of depth, defections, etc.

But to find anything negative out of scheduling "Hampton" Sydney for an exhibition is absurd. Two points:

1) We also scheduled pre-season top 5 UVA for a scrimmage. So did we schedule too hard for that one or was it just right?

2) It is only an exhibition. Teams often choose a local, smaller college for this type of thing. Makes for easy travel, convenience, some local interest, etc.

Does it really matter if we were going against a 6-20 DIII team or a 20-6 DII team? Not at all. This game is not an indicator of how good our team will be this season. For Hampden-Sydney's guys they will probably be super hyped to play a higher level school like us. For us, coach will probably use this game as an opportunity to see different lineup combinations and to find out how our newcomers perform in actual game scenarios.

Two years ago VCU lost to DII Queens University and went to the NCAA tournament. It will be fun to see our guys in some game action, but whether we win by 50 or lose this game means very little.

Mooney will not run up the score; Spiders win by 15-20 points.

Your missing the point. We should be scrimmaging the best teams possible.
Not necessarily. You don’t want to get your head beat in every game before the season starts. But I get your point that you want to play the best to be the best.

However, playing “lesser” teams allows you to do some other things that playing a the best teams doesn’t. Also, every game of the season isn’t VCU/Davidson. Learning to not play down to your opponent (like we did a lot last year), is something to practice. My ideal scenario would to have a really hard session in the morning, so our guys are a little tired going into the scrimmage, then demand focus on putting away a lesser team (as a big picture for the scrimmage. Clearly you use scrimmages to try out all sorts of different things as well).

I like your thinking, but does the NCAA allow a hard practice on a scrimmage game day?

Virginia Tech is playing an exhibition game against Liberty, and they are both D1 teams, so apparently it's allowed.
they made a provision this year where you could add a D1 exhibition for hurricane relief. don't know for sure that's the case here but a I assume so.

OK since everyone (sman) is being snarky with me about this gripe - which I feel is legitimate, what I am seeing is D1 teams can play two pre-season games. Can play either closed scrimmages vs D1, or exhibition vs D2, D3 NAIA. I really don't think the playing down to a very low tier D3 team is the way to go. We tried to ease into the season playing the likes of Jacksonville State and Delaware, how did that work. I would rather get some good comp to get us ready for the season. Maybe its a logistics thing. I see Roanoke College is ranked just outside pre season top 25, but most teams are in Northeast or midwest. Hopefully it does us some good.

as discussed we did get a closed door scrimmage with one of the best teams in the country. if the closed door was against Delaware State, I might see the argument that we should try to find a tougher team before the season starts. but probably not. it's still a scrimmage.

all I want from this is to get 7 new faces some time and some success so they can be confident on opening night.

To clarify, I would say that there were probably too many slow white Virginians on our team.
I'm not sure that the student body had anything to do with it.
We have only one white Virginian on the team and he is the best player we have. Oops

From looking at the 1st half stats, Sals lack of playing time is disappointing. I was hoping he would be ready to contribute a bit early and move into a solid contributor later in the season.
