GMU In Game

Good Power 5 teams would not.

In the last 50 years we have had exactly one (1) UR player have a significant NBA career. So really, how many of our players, at any time, would be starters on good P5 teams, since that seems to be the criteria of how good a particular Spider player is?

First we were no good because we lost more than we won.

Then we were no good because the teams we beat are not good.

Then we are still no good because the P5 teams we beat are no good.

Then we are no good because the A-10 teams we beat at home are no good.

Then we are no good because the A-10 teams we beat on the road are no good, even though they'd won about 83% of their home games this year before losing to us.

Then one of our better players would only be a backup elsewhere in a league where he's made two all-star teams. And of course he'd be a much better player under different coaching, even though he's torched many of the defenses those other coaches put on the floor.

Tough to keep up when the goalposts keep shifting.

Call me crazy, but I'm going to be happy with 14-4, 4-1.
You can be critical of a team while still believing they are good.

You point out many of the critiques the team has received this year, but your conclusion that it means people don’t think the team is good isn’t correct. I think it’s natural to be apprehensive about believing unconditionally about a team in general, and especially one that has lost as many games as we have the past 2 years.

I find it commendable you and others have been able to stay positive and have unwavering belief, but you shouldn’t begrudge those that still haven’t made it back to the promise land.

I am trying to soften my brand on spidernation.com, I think the new avatar is good, no? I do realize I still attack some of the dumb posters, and the one fraud, but overall trying to accentuate the positive more, I THINK I am on the right track.
The future is indeed bright. Come fully into the light. Say "Chris Mooney is a great coach" three times, you will be forever changed. For extra emphasis, click your heels together three times.

The 22-3 1st half run was incredible. Down 23-13 with just under 11 minutes left turned into ahead 35-26 with just under 5 minutes left. We forced 4 turnovers during this stretch and made layups, jumpers, and 3s. Jacob had 8 points, 3 assists, and a steal during this 6 minute stretch. Just awesome.

Ecstatic that we are 14-4 so far this season and you raise many good points. However, none obviate that we are 77-72 over the last four full seasons and to date this.

Some fans, understandably, are happy and leery at the same time. They are still loyal Spiders.

No one said they are not loyal. I'm critical of the moving goalposts. Every time we do something positive, the goalposts move again.

I would say for most Mooney critics, including myself (and I'm not even some huge anti-Mooney guy), it's as simple as this: make the NCAA tournament. The wins this year are nice and we are in the bubble conversation which is good. But until we make another tourney the doubts will continue, and rightly so since its been so long.

There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that its is high time that on Sunday March 15th we need to hear the name of the Richmond Spiders being announced as one of the 68 teams selected for the 2020 NCAA Basketball Tournament. Since we first made the NCAA Tournament in 1984 we have not gone this long since our last selection. Previous selection years are listed below.

NCAA Appearances (1984, 1986, 1988, 1990-91, 1998, 2004, 2010-11)

While it is a long shot, I would like for us to get a 7th seed to avenge that lost to the 10th seed when we were favored and lost to Washington I believe. Now that would be redemption!!

I don't see anything wrong with continuing to move the bar up. That's what's been wrong with this program. Too many satisfied with status quo. I'm happy with 14-4, but we should have never lost to Radford and we've still got things to clean up in game management. We're now winning games because of foul shooting instead of losing them. It's a strength that's under utilized. Keep pushing.

St Mary’s?

St Mary’s?
Ah, you mention St. Mary's.

After we played them in Providence in the NCAA, they went in
2012
2013
2017
2019

But we are defeatist4700nation.com and we couldn't possible go more than 2 times every 13 years. No, they are a P6 that enrolls 30,000 students so NO WAY we can expect that.

23, your brand is good just like it is! Only suggestion would be in this day and age, when posting, think ..... I mean KNOW their dumb posts but type in "low-IQ." ;)

Would like to see Grant be a little stronger for sure, but he is a really good player. I feel like chemistry is still being built. I think we are going to see some excellent GG offense the next 4-6 weeks.

Listening to Mooney and our AD must drive you nuts.
Seriously, the admin is ultimate goalpost mover, or really they don't even establish the goalpost to measure. Let's just make the goalpost fuzzy and blurry by saying something like our goal is to "compete for championships".

Try measuring that one.

I don't listen to Mooney or the AD.

Saying a team must compete for championships - which to any reasonable person means to be a solid contender for the conference title, not a middle-of-the-road or lower-tier team - seems pretty concrete to me.

If we're a serious contender for the A-10 title, we're a serious contender for an NCAA berth.

Well, that might be your interpretation of competing for championship and it might be mine as well, but who knows if that is Hardt and Mooney's or what they truly meant by it.

A more distinct way to say that instead of we want our MBB to compete for a a championship. We want our MBB team to either win the A-10 tournament or get an at large bid to the NCAA tournament next year.

Instead we got, we want them to compete for the A-10 championship this year. There is a reason they said it that way. No one can come back now and say we didn't meet the goal.

I have the same interpretation as both of you, which is, as Wood says, how a "reasonable person" would understand it.

More troubling is the implication that we've only fallen short of that goal the past two seasons (as some kind of anomaly). In the 6 preceding seasons we have one T-3rd (with our only A10 semifinal appearance) and one T-4th. In neither of those two seasons were we still in contention for the A10 title entering March.

Missed seeing the Mason game, cause I was out of town. But from the comments and articles on the game, it appeared after a slow start we pulled away and kept them at arms length the rest of the way. Only concern, as with the Davidson game was we played very soft prevent defense at the end.

I think though after the Francis injury, winning two straight road games against capable but by no means great opponents in relatively easy fashion is a really positive sign for this team. The Francis injury could have easily derailed our season (and still might) but it appears that both Goose and Burton have responded to the increased playing responsibilities and Gilyard has begun playing like a first team all A-10 player after not looking like that the previous month. Sherod has also become more assertive in Blake's absence.

All of that needs to continue, if this team wants to remain in contention for an NCAA bid.

This Spider team is good. And it is certainly better than the previous 2 years. But our defense is still a major concern and my prediction from here on out is that we will win the games against the lower teams in the league, but lose to the better teams. It is tough to upset the better teams when you are simply trying to outscore them.

But isn't the point of basketball to outscore the opponent? If you play good defense but they score 1 more point, is that good?

by the way, how did your "Davidson and McKillop will turn it around" post age?
