We all know that Grant set the record for most points by a spider freshman, however not many people are focusing on the fact that Gilyard's 366 total points were tied for sixth most by a freshman in Spiders history.

We all know his 89 steels broke the previous record by Tony Dobbins of 85 and his 2.78 steals per game were sixth most in D-I , but how about his 2.41 assist-to-turnover ratio which ranked fifth among D-I freshmen and third most of any A-10 player.

His 130 assists shatter the freshman record held by Ken Atkinson (115) since 1986-87 and were ninth-most in a season in Spiders history

His career 83.6% free throw percentage ranks in the top 10 all time for a Spider.

Here is the scary part, he actually got better as the season went on. For the season he average 4.1 assist per game, however in the A10 (last 18 games) he averaged 5.1 and 3 steals a game.

It is going to be exciting to see how well he plays the next 3 years. We have had a lot of great players at point guard over the years, but Gilyard might finish his U of R career as the best ever.

So does having Schneider, Ford, and Verbinskis in the class, but the thread was really just about Gilly, and it was on point there.

88-89 Freshman Class:
Curtis Blair - CAA POY - NCAA participant, upset Syracuse. NBA 2nd round pick
JIm Shields - CAA Tournament MVP lifting Spiders into NCAA, long overseas playing career
Gravelle Craig - Numerous awards, finalist for Cousy award, albeit at Cleveland State.
William Herndon - Led NCAA in FG% - albeit at UMASS

Very very accomplished class.

Curtis Blair - silent assasin, we have not had a game closer of his level in Mooney era since KA and Gonzo.

If this team can drag us to an NCAA sweet 16 with mooniocrity as coach, I will definitely say some of the best ever like Harp, KA, etc.

This thread is even sillier now than it was then. God, I forgot about the Ford, Verbinkus, and Schneider. 3 players we had zero business offering scholarships. Yeah, but "best class ever".

Tonight at the Robin Center will be a historic event as they unveil a banner signifying Gilly's achievement in breaking the NCAA steals record. Very few active players in NCAA basketball history have ever seen a banner raise while still an active player. It has to be an awesome feeling for him. In addition, the ball from the UR-at-UNI game will be on display in the Robin Center concourse. This is well deserved and it has been awesome watching him play over the past 4+ year. Go Gilly! Go Spiders!

A lot of bashing of Mooney on this board; not saying it's not justified; I'm one who feels it's time for a change, but Jacob is one of the very bright stars of the Mooney era and these accolades are well deserved and should be applauded. The rammies are trying to denegrate this accomplishment by stating their Briante Weber is more deserving and would have broken the record (if he hadn't blown up his knee due to Kendall Anthony's magical move on him in the open court). They fail to recognize, however, that Jake had 12 more steals in one less game than Briante.

I thought this was about team? So far it’s the most under achieving team in my memory…….Jacobs wonderful success just validates that point
